Copied from wikipedia:
Before she was sixteen years old, Shapiro had been voted Britain's "Top Female Singer"; The Beatles' first national tour of Britain, in the late winter and early spring of 1963, was as one of her supporting acts. During the course of the tour, the Beatles had their own first hit single, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song "Misery" for her; but Shapiro's producer, Norrie Paramor, turned it down, and she did not record the composition.
In 1995, during a This Is Your Life highlighting her life and career, Shapiro revealed, "It was actually turned down on my behalf before I ever heard it, actually. I never got to hear it or give an opinion. It's a shame, really." Shapiro lip-synched her then-current single, "Look Who It Is", on the British television programme Ready Steady Go! with three of the Beatles (John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison).

Cause that's what I owe you, Walking back to happiness I shared with you. Walking back to happiness again. I was given these words a few years ago in a dream, Lovely Song, very gifted vocalist.👏👏👏

Helen Shapiro was a leading British pop star in the early 60s. One of the Beatles' first breaks was touring with her. She was top-billed and they were number 5 or 6. John and Paul actually wrote "Misery" for her but her manager didn't like it so she never recorded it... By the time of this Ready, Steady, Go, the Beatles were the top group in the country and Helen's career was on the wane. They were doing her a solid by appearing in the video...

John and Paul wrote "misery" for her while they were on tour with her. "From me to you" was the newest Beatles record at the time, and it eventually got to no.1 and made the Beatles superstars almost over night. Helen Shapiro was kind of embarrassed by their fans who was screaming "We want the Beatles" while she was on. Eventually, they became top of the bill on that tour and she moved down. When "She loves you" was released all hell broke loose and Beatlemania officially started in England and all over Europe. They were already worldwide superstars when they landed in NYC in february 1964. Many Americans seem to think that that`s where it happened, but the Beatles were already HUGE all over Europe and in England.

@@yellyman5483 Yes indeed - the same as Alma Cogan - who - like Helen - was also good friends with the Beatles - especially with John Lennon who it’s rumoured she had a fling with. It was said that Paul was at an interview during the taping of this great video. They would have had to add another verse to accommodate him . I can’t say if the lyrics were actually intended for the Beatles, but I have a very strong feeling they were.

He was judging a dance contest in another studio. He chose Melanie Coe as the winner. Coincidentally, he later wrote a song about her, "She's Leaving Home," from Sgt. Pepper's, after he read an article about her running away from home. Hard to know whether he remembered her or not.

Cynthia Lennon, I read, said that there was a strong personal attraction of John Lennon for Helen Shapira. Besides her being a nice looking and popular singer, Cynthia Lennon said she thought that John Lennon's personal attraction to her stemmed from Shapira's personal warmth (i.e. not "heat") and her bit of caring, "motherly" warmth, something that John Lennon later found in Yoko Ono, a more authority, parental-figure type. (It's been a long time since I read that, in an interview of Cythia Lennon. I most likely have not remembered Cynthia Lennon's words very well or very accurately, but the gist of what she said registered with me very well.)

When Helen playfully slaps George's wrist ~ after he appears to take the song line about a "hand reaching out for [hers]" a little too far ~ if I'm not mistaken, George appears to respond with more aggression than for a joke. It looks like he comes very close to swiping the lady ~ and then goes on his knees as if begging for her forgiveness. I think the Beatles were street fighters before they became famous as the Beatles ~ but Helen takes it all in her stride. They may have shared a kind of friendship where sparing at each other was much a part. Ringo's part was the coolest ~ where he dances to the tune and cutely places his head on her shoulder. All you get from John, however, is just a goofy grin ~ and it appears Paul did not want to play silly games or make a goose of himself that night (I think it was night).
