Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!
- Dan

Like you, I aim for ultralight but that chair is worth it, 100000% every time. One of my favorite pieces of gear. Yes, your friends will tease but they will be beyond jealous on the inside. 😄

Jealous is right! If anything, that's another downside... Everyone else at camp will hate you for being so comfortable 😆

REI had them for sale end of last year and I got one for Christmas 😎 Helinox also sells “rocker” attachments and small ball feet for the sinking issue. I’m with you on the bark or a small rock under the feet though and don’t really see myself getting any add ons. Maybe if I took it on vacation to the beach or something but for the most part, mine will live in the woods on backpacking trips
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking 5 жыл бұрын
I remember that sale! Such a great deal. I almost got one for my wife but held off. Thinking of getting her that REI chair to compare. Glad you agree about the bark! The add ons are nice but seems unnecessary. Although I did see they sell a cupholder...hmm... 😁

I chose the new Leki Sub1. Almost as light as the Helinox, but has much (!) better sink-resistant feet, bit higher from the ground, does not wiggle when leaning back due to better frame and even has a cup holder and bag. And it's at app. 60 bucks only.

I have a Moon Lence and its awesome quality for the price. Aluninum, easy to setup and comfortable. It is a full back chair.... But it is 4lbs and takes up half of a backpack for space. Perfectly fine for car. Camping but useless for backpacking.

@@GetUpTheMountains Haven't done it yet. BUT, through Darwin on the Trail, I heard about the Gossamer Gear 1/8 pad, I'm gonna try that first. Should be good enough and way lighter and cheaper. But they're sold out so I guess it's a good product!

@@nspinicelli I'm not willing to downgrade my comfort from a reasonable chair to a tiny thin little foam pad to save on a few ounces. Imagine yourself at the end of that 17-mile hike...exhausted, are you going to be excited to pony up... to 1/8th of an inch of foam? How luxuriant!

@@GetUpTheMountains Just whatever to give my lower back a break. Laying down on a clean surface would probably work better anyways.

I've never done a thru hike, but unless you're looking to shave as much weight as possible I would personally bring this on longer hikes. After all, many more nights sitting around at camp. Anyone watching do a thru hike and bring a chair?

“This thing is exactly 16 oz” I’m guessing you took their word for it. If you weigh it yourself, it’s not as light as the REI version. Comes in around 1.5lbs

Guess we both bought the same chair then 😁 My scale comes in at 17.5. I found the helionox to be more comfortable than the REI, so I'm okay with the fact that they're dirty rotten liers when it comes to weight. Backpacking Light did an awesome comparison of the two and I agree with his conclusions (aka I found the helionox more comfortable because of its design). But comfort of course is all a matter of opinion, so y'all park your butt wherever's most comfortable! Thanks for watching!
