Helinox Ultra Light Camping and 4WD Sunset Chair review after 1 year of extensive use. It's probably the lightest and most compact yet comfortable camping / 4wd chair around, and it has been in my Landcruiser ever since. I have used the Helinox chair on all touring trips over the past 12 months including on the CSR Canning Stock Route, The Simpson Desert, Tirari Desert, Strzelecki Desert, and two Fraser Island Trips. Find out if the chair is worth the steep price of AU$209 and if it survived my torturous touring trips.
While I don't rid motorcycle this may also be a valid option for someone touring as a motorcycle camping chair.
Here is my review of the Helinox Sunset Chair

Great review again. Have wondered about these chairs before but never seen one anywhere to have a test sit. Amazing how the humble camp chair is getting bigger and heavier and not necessarily more comfortable, every time i need a new one.

Helinox, great bit of kit. I have the sunset chair with sand kit, the cot, the table for 3 years now. Can't fault even for a tubby dude. I had a fault with the elastic cord and they gave me enough to fix 5 cots. Cheers Gaz.

Great review. I actually have a couple of the cheaper ones. Low back, but 2 for $60aus. They are great. I’m 10kg over their max weight and have had no issues..

I've had my Sunset chair for 4 years now, BRB x2 Central Oz & heaps around Far North Qld. I can't fault it & I don't share it with anyone!! I also have the table & Cot one. Expensive but the weight saving & quality pays for itself in the long term. Just don't leave them in the alone in the wind... They like to escape!!

We purchased these chairs after having changed our chairs 4 or 5 times due to weight, volume and because they broke after a short period of use. Our Helinox were our companions during a 12 months trip all around Australia and have been used every day. They still look as new and we are looking forward to use them many more years. Yes, they are light and tend to fly......and yes, sometimes we are missing arm rests. But, they are the best chairs we ever had.....Cheers from Germany, Roland.

thank you for your feedback Roland, yes I definitely rate them highly especially for touring where I don't sit for hours around the Camp fire.

I have used my Sunset for years, I am near 300#, only camp chair I have ever had I didn't break. It has been hundreds of events. Fits in my motorcycle panniers. Even used it weekly for outdoor church during the pandemic.

yep, still weights only 1.4kg 1/4 of the size of most other chairs and definitely beats a log or the ground and also many bigger chairs in comfort (if you can get used to no armrest, which I did quickly)

Clearly it's a wonderful camp chair. My camp chairs cost about $20 from the local hardware store about 12 years ago and they are still going strong (except I had to repair the seat when a rat nibbled it). The frame is made from Al and is v light. I'm pleased I didn't know enough about camping / overlanding back then to realise I needed to buy the real thing :-) In a similar vein I recently read a review of camping knives on an expedition website, average price c. $500 US. Clearly they are great products. My camping knives were bought in a service area in Spain for c. €20 each. They are really good too. For the life of me I don't understand the difference.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a camping chair for $20 that last nowadays. I tried a few for the kids and myself and beside that they where pretty uncomfortable non lasted longer then a year. It’s like with everything people have different priority’s I have friends who drink $200 of Booz in a night I rather spend it on something which lasts.

Surprised you don’t sink into sand too much, l seem to and lm not a big as you. I solved the problem by cutting a couple of pieces of 40 mm storm water pipe and drilling some 32 mm hole for the legs in sit in . Works a charm.

I do sinks a little but hasn’t bothered me enough to do something about it. I just reposition the chair from time to time. Good idea with the caps I use some hard foam mat squares for my stretcher in sand

I would love a light-weight chair but at $200 I think the manufacturer is having a bit of a laugh. Looking at this skinny legs, I don't think it would hold my weight either. We have had more camping chairs than we can count and are yet to find something that is strong, small, light weight, comfortable and doesn't involve robbing a bank to buy :)

Behave Stefan, you surely know by now any self respecting Aussie won't carry a chair unless it takes up at least 1/3 of the load space, is super heavy, has padding where you can't feel it when sitting & horrendously uncomfortable 😉 Great review, I just wish Kermit chairs from the US were easier to get over here as they look amazing too & they get good ratings from people with lumbar issues 👍

@@AlloffroadAu They were originally made for adventure motorbiking as far as I can gather & have been adopted by overlanders due to having no moving parts & being primarily wood you can repair them in the middle of nowhere with a stick if necessary. They're more of a directors chair looks wise & have pretty short legs so you need to buy extensions but they pack tiny & people use them daily for many years on overland trips with no issues so there must be some quality in them. Extortionately expensive to ship to Oz unfortunately, but they would certainly fit into luggage easily if you know someone visiting from Stateside 👍
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 4 жыл бұрын
yes I saw, probably a bit big for me to carry but they look like a comfortable chair
@gaj5701
@gaj5701 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, they're definitely a bit bigger & probably double the weight of the Helinox, although they're still significantly smaller in packed size than the usual camp chairs we see. I'm in the planning stages for a global overland adventure over a few years so I'm quite taken by the fact they're confident enough to offer a 5 year warranty & the general simplicity of them for that kind of journey where replacing a chair could be next to impossible.
