Alpine you wonderful, talented gentleman of class. It saddens me that you have made this video, but in truth I’ve been waiting for it for about a year now. Like you, I also was there in the early beta days so excited for the absolute potential we had before us and also enjoying the game in general along with learning how to effectively communicate with your team and employ tactics becoming to stay alive in the harsh world of HLL with the original beta maps (big key there for me). When the news of BM sold our “boy” to Team17 the first thing I did was look at their resume of projects, and what did I see? … worms… I saw worms. My confidence was shaky at best right at the get I’m afraid. To keep this short, the reason I ceased playing was constant disappointment again and again. I still have a couple friends who still keep the torch lit for HLL and do you know what they play? Pre 1.0 maps only, and that is the straw that broke the back. No progression, only regression.Half step forward and two steps back haha (alright that’s enough kicking). I wish you well Alpine and God Speed, really think Squad44 is shaping up something fierce :)

Team 17 was the wrong developer to purchase HLL. They company has been pure dysfunction on the corporate side with three separate CEOs in the last two years. HLL is their #1 Steam seller by a huge margin, but when looking at their 2023 annual report to investors, they see continued development as a sunk cost and want to put in as little effort and $$ into development and maximize profits through this DLC bullshit. Someone needs to create its successor in UE5 in order to get what the community really needs.

I’m telling you! Move to Squad 44. I’ve got around 2,000 hours in HLL, but seriously OWI and Mercury Arts are cooking. They actually give a shit and the player base has been pretty steady unlike before. The Pacific was just teased. We got the North Afrika Mod and Eastern Front mod, that’ll surely be bought and brought in as an official chapter. They also play with the community and I’ve had more fun lately there than HLL.

The frustrating thing for me about the game is the number of players that don't know how to play Squad Leader or Support, two of the most important roles in the game. There are many places where a player can learn the basics and improve the play for everyone - youtube, reddit, etc, etc - keep posting and stay frosty

The new UI, tons of new players which do not know about the importance of garrisons, the 12€ DLC, wierd suggestions on Discord, lack of Polish and Finnish forces,... They need to change a lot of things. I got this game in 2021, then, it had its problems, but it was much more fun and less toxic than now. Its sad, I will continue to play it, but the Devs should accept help from veteran players or see the problem

I played my first match since March yesterday and was surprised how lonely it felt. No comms and no cohesiveness in the squad or team as a whole. It truely felt empty, even though the server was full of players. I have 650+ hours into HLL, and Ive been able to get so much enjoyment out of the game despite the frame drops, LOD issues, and broken roadmap promises because of the COMMUNITY. But sadly, it really feels like the true HLL Community has moved on. And without those veteran players, this game is a hollow shell of its former self. Very sad to see, but its been a long time coming i guess

Absolutely agree with you Alpine, this game brought me back to gaming and filled the void for that itch for an authentic WW2 experience in modern gaming, even though I may not have been there for the game at day one(started playing it May of 2023 on PS5) I still share the same passion for it in wanting to see this game make improvements and achieve it's full potential! It’s been down hill since the game pass release. Not that some new players don’t do well. Most come from other FPS games that just aren’t the same. They are used to running solo and HLL obviously doesn’t match up well with that. It is frustrating. This is the best game I have played in years. I went through the COD early days and BFV and this was such a relief but I agree…vets are leaving and some new players just troll and play it like COD and ruin it.

Come play squad 44 :) Trolling aside, I played HLL for a while but the search and destroy gameplay just didn't do it for me. The experience in S44 is the immersive WW2 shooter I really wanted. It sits along Red Orchestra and Forgotten Hope as some of my favorites.

Do you think there is still hope for HLL future?

With almost 3300 hours in this game it has been enjoyable - however the $12.00 paid DLC absolutely has turned me off. I can understand the nickel & dime for some uniform cosmetics, but I have not seen anything the community has really asked for. On top of this I feel sorry for the guys who are really trying to better the game and T17 seem to be changing Devs like most of us change socks - often because they begin to stink! (like how I cleaned that up?) I am not on a par with most of all yall "good players" cant hit the side of a building with anything, but I do/did enjoy the teamwork involved when you're on a good squad. I'll still be around but I am looking for a new game that will take my time.

Man, it sucks being the only engineer/support in the entire game i swear the number of times i had to make nodes all by myself and make fortifications just to keep the capture points safe and the amount of times i had too yell at the noobies to cover me so i can finish building it sucks. The dev team is also horrible. can't even fix the voice chat, so i can talk to the whole team or even my own unit HLL needs a new dev team period. Worst yet Team17 doesn't even take advice from the veteran player base like to fix the voip maybe even fix the deploy for the machineguns its super frustrating.

Unfortunately this is fairly common with games. I know of a few great games that had potential just wasted. I wouldn’t say HLL is there yet but it’s going in that direction

Team17 has ruined everyththing

Most of my friends that I would squad up with have basically abandoned the game and I'm nearly at that point. It is such a shame because the game was and is still fun, but only if you have people that actually work together which is nearly non existent at this point. Bugs, glitches and hackers are becoming a lot more prevalent in ky time playing recently and I think I'm going to just move to squad 44.

I’m noticing a lot of 1-3 man locked squads at relatively low levels more recently. When you join a server with the entire alphabet in locked squads you know it’s gonna be a rough match. I just log out. Plus way more sus happenings than ever before as of late.

HLL is in a difficult place, I've just finished commanding a losing game, and whilst there were some really good squad leads, it's becoming clear that the premise that you win by taking and holding territory is not really landing with many new (and not so new) players, they're just after kills and thrills, it's a CoD mentality. The devs could probably solve this issue but I'm not sure they want to, they want as many players to sign up as possible, they need to expand the player base and claw back the millions they spent on the purchase of the game. I'm not ready to abandon it for Squad 44, but the time is getting closer.

I see a few people commenting on the players of HLL. I don't think this is as much the fault of Team17 as it was a timing issue. It was really unfortunate when Team17 released HLL on Game Pass, that CoD had a huge issue with their players that caused a lot of them to leave CoD. A large portion of those CoD players came to HLL because it was on Game Pass. Now you have a large portion of players trying to play HLL like it was CoD, and that doesn't work. That's like putting an F1 driver in an over-sized semi-truck. The frustrating part most HLL player feel comes from CoD player that have no interest in learning the nuance of playing HLL. With that, Team17 isn't faultless in this. The new loadout UI is CRAP! No one wanted it, No one needed it, and there were tons of things that should have been a priority over a UI change (like the sound bug in SME's church). The lack of communication between Team17 and the players has lead a lot of player to come to the conclusion that Team17 is just in for the money and don't really care about the game or players. I don't blame Team17 for caring about the money. As a company, it's their job to make money. But, like growing a fruit tree, if you concentrate on pruning the limbs and ignore the condition of the soil, you will lose the fruit and the tree. Lastly, is Squad44 the answer? I don't know. I bought Squad44 while it was on sale a few days ago. I watched a ton of videos on Squad44 game play, etiquette, and strategies. I was struck by the lack of players. There was only one server with a ping under 100ms and that had more than 2 players. I joined that server, and half the team was waiting for someone to start a new squad. As it was my very first time playing, I refused to be Squad Leader. After finally getting into the game I was struck by how the lighting and color pallet made it look like a cartoon. My first action was to advice my squad that this was my first game ever on Squad44. Within 5 minutes, I was accused of team killing with grenades. I pointed out two things, I hadn't even fired my rifle, and I was three grid squares away. While I'm not sure of the distance, I'm fairly sure it's to far for a grenade. The toxic and overwhelming clutter of the comms was so bad that I was unable to warn my team of a enemy tank flanking our squad. I was, of course, blamed for not warning about the tank even though I had tried numerous times and I had had a squad member on either side of me that could have warned them. My point being, Squad44 isn't in any better position then HLL. So, is it really the answer?

I had about 300 hours in post scriptum (squad44) before ever playing Hell let loose and once I did I never went back, least until recently. I got tired of the lack of progress HLL was making and noticed all the changes Squad44 had made, jumped into a few games and it was really refreshing to play something different. There are weaknesses and it’s not perfect by any means but it’s great to see a developer actively trying to improve a game without trying to gouge its fan base

Wow remember when T17 took over and they were like we’re going to do every year of the war in sync with a year in real life and they spoke about Danzig and the winter war then just nothing lol

For me the writing has been on the wall for some time now. Its a damn shame. The game could have been great but it took too long to fix shit and add relevant content/features. If HLL truly is a lost cause, lets back Squad44 all we can. The devs are doing the right things and working hard at realizing the games potential. Every update is a leap forward, just like HLL:s updates used to be. The course is set, all it needs is more players to truly be great. And YES, they are working on 100 player servers.

Same here. I’m a HLL-Only-Player since update 3. The Free Weekends and GamePasses destroyed HLL quickly. 90% of the current players don’t talk, have no strategic or tactical knowledge and gaming this game in a CoD style. It doesn’t make fun…

I hope this game stays because its actually incredible

There's this fan game that was released by 2 dudes in 2013, it blew up like no one could've predicted and he dropped the project in 2015. In 2019, the game nearly died when the servers dropped, but thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated players making a remake, they used their servers to revive the first game. Development is slow, and has hit road blocks due to the dev team being very small, but they've shown their resilience even up until present day of this comment, more so than any other attempt at remaking this game in the past. My point is: Hell Let Loose could thrive from the community taking over instead of some dudes sitting in their office (not even playing the game) having charge, but the cons of that weigh a lot, for example, when people get bored, they just don't want to do things even for the sake of an entire communities backlash.

Wish they'd have made playable flying by now. Aerial strafe runs and dogfights would've been incredible plus allowing for an extra form of reconnaisance.

I absolutely love this game and play it everyday. I play hard taking on commander and squad leader. This game is still amazing and definitely look forward to getting the bugs fixed. Especially the comms issue

I slowed playing when my SL was at 10 for a year or more and i was always having to fill the roll. I stopped when that new map came out and crashed my computer every time it loaded. I'm now running at the park and in the gym improving reality 5+ days a week. Im an old geezer, i needed it.

What dpi and in-game sensitivity do you use?

Usually have to go to 3-4 different servers to find a team that has mics and knows what they are doing.Was not like that when I started December 2023.

@2:06 - excellent use of superfluous. Glory days of HLL are long past. Still one of my favorite games of all time, but the people who took stewardship over the title have been the antithesis of effective communicators and capable change agents. Having seen this occur with the Battlefield franchise, nothing surprises me anymore, but at least now it's easier to sniff out the bullshit and move on to greener pastures. Can't wait to get stuck into Squad 44.

man i love the game so much played since the very beginning, the community is great, for the most part, except for all the toxic call of duty trolls infesting the game lately, ive met so many cool people, it rlly sucks that no other big company has been able to put a title rivaling hell let loose, hopefully squad 44 like you said, will capitalize cuz with all its issues its still the best ww2 tactical shooter and that feels crazy to say with everything t-17 has done to try and run it into the ground. hope for the best and prepare for the worst i guess, ive rlly been getting into gates of hell, even tho its an rts it has been alot of fun, and tons of content from the modding community and the devs themselves imagine what the modding community would be able to do with hell let loose!

The past month i moved to squad 44. Not because of the HLL drama and the dlc but because i heard they added a new game mode similar to offensive. It was like a week before they added the dlc. Guess i got good timing i guess.

such a shame. I have loved this game since day 1 but lately its felt off to me. cant fix basic issues but introduce dumb things like audio when selecting units and outfits... pointless additions...

The combination of new players not learning and older players giving up on playing properly/ willing to teach others is the main issue.

To be fair, whatever happens, it's only real competition is Squad 44/ Post humorously known as Post scriptum. I checked that game out after it's very recent armor update, adding awesome stuff like the Sd.kfz variants, the Stug, and even the Nebelwerfer. On top of give or take ~ 30 varying vehicles, mostly for Germany and the U.S. Unsure of the other nations. All of this may sound great, but as far as America, only had 2. Yes TWO servers. One of 76/80 with 10-15+ queued up and the other with 2/80. The other 4-5 servers had over 200 ping. Squad 44, Just simply doesn't exist unfortunately.

@ΛLPINE SNIPER This is something I have called out ages ago(even before the Team17 shift), yet fanboys as usual even ignored or shutdown criticism. There are fundamental issues with the game beyond LoDs, or the famous bugs that people complained about for ages (granades and class), things that are core to how the game is played and differs itself than just another run and gun BF game. The real work that was needed to be done to UI and communication tools to improve the strategic and tactical aspects of the game (key things that drew lots of players like me) were never got any attention to. I have long stopped playing HLL, it's a shame cause the potential was there, but in reality in pub games there was never real strategy or tactics, just headless chickens looking to kill the most. RiP HLL.

Wish I wouldnt tell this story, but in previous weeks I had been indirectly abused twice due to my "lack of english". I aint western or native language user, but I still speak full english and actively communicate, despite broken grammar . Never been abused too since three months played the game before. The saddest part is that I experienced this through the command chat, and the offenders were all low levels (< 30). Fortunately some of the vets shielded me, kicked the immatures, and proceeded to had a good game and Win, *without even complaining my grammar*. The toxicity started to seep in, and this should be a concern too.

Squad 44 is the ww2 game to be playing. 1k hours in hll and i look at my time in that game as more like a tutorial to squad 44 than anything.

i tried to teach players how to make garries and put Op, but most don't have mics. Some of them don't know english.. playing commander is almost not fun due the new players.... the new UI sucks, it takes way more time to change lodauts and the outfit selections are bug, they keep adding more and more french maps, they forgo about the soviets and British... I'm tired of playing the same maps repeatedly... is Utah Beach or Carentan, sometimes Stalingrad or kurz, and sometimes driel.... i waant a dunkirt map a berlin last stang map, more urban scenarios, so many options......

finally someone spoke the truth, people may not like it but this game aint in a good place and its not looking good. its wasted potential, the game still suffers from identity issues, no meaningfull additions or changes have been done in a long time, new content just boils down to maps that the community largely rejects anyway since they dont fit the dated design of the game. also the community quality is degrading less and less people play the game like it NEEDS TO in order to be a fun experience, the game is highly dependent on good SL's and commanders to work well

The most frustrating thing for me ( a new player, only just got to level 30 after a week or so) is the amount of players not playing the objective, laying down supplies or outposts or even garrisons for that matter and they are higher levels than I am. I was a level 10 screaming for someone to drop supplies or an outpost near the objective so we didn’t have to Forrest Gump it from the HQ. Absolutely in love with this game band hope it doesn’t die but there’s some players that sadly just don’t get it. There will always be a learning curve and I have taken only a week or so to understand what we need, when we need it. Most players I’m seeing are thinking it’s battlefield with zero team work.. that’s what’s killing this game..

The game is absolute fine. It has lot of content and every match is a new challange. Ofc i wish me more maps for Russia and maybe a big new warzone like Japan, but all in all for that price is super decent.

It really is a shame to see what this game is becoming... Was a part of the no.1 comp team in OCE for quite a while but a lot of us have stepped down lately due to just not enjoying the game anymore.

its so sad to see the state of the game. when i first saw the Kickstarter i had hope that for the first time there would be a ww2 game with the level of detail and love i wanted and the degree of realism i can still enjoy without having to go to westpoint first. when i first played into the alpha it clicked immediately and through the whole beta i just fell in love with this game more and more. then life happened and i could not play as often as i liked anymore and now i feel i missed out on hours of joy that could have been.

Videos like this confuse me because I think the biggest problem I run into on a day to day basis is with the player community. Sure you sometimes get weird hitbox issues and the menus have bugs, but the gameplay is super solid overall. I’d even say the game itself is better than most modern COD releases. The biggest thing I see every day is a team killing massacre to start nearly every match and players who don’t understand how the game works. That’s not anything a dev can really fix

I agree. For me the game peaked with Russian update. I really enjoyed Stalingrad + Kursk despite the bad framerate. I left the game for a couple of months, cause it's not really fun to play alone after a certain time. (2500 h) Then i jumped back for the British update, i was really looking forward to it, but it turned out to be terrible, omg. Every aspect of it, from the bolt action rifles to the new armor, uninstalled the game after that. I think they struggling to keep, the "old" players, and i constantly see the request under their twitter page to implement a console server browser and still nothing. Black Matter leaving this game was a huge mistake, i don't think the new dev team is up to the task quality-wise. 12 EUR for 2 little skins, which you can only use on the Mortain map is also ridiculous. I had no problem to support them with that 5 EUR pack after each update, but this is getting out of hand.

The new UI they implemented makes me more mad than anything else cause of the fact that the old one was smooth when changing loadout. Seeing how its so important to have the right equipment for the environment and trying to catch a spawn wave. The new ui they got just sucks, doesn't work really like clicking the arrow a few times for it to start changing tabs to loadout and always coming back to appearances is just frustrating when playing comp matches.

Im lvl 70 with about 150hrs of playtime, and it's getting a little hard to grind all the next equipment, and so the main reason to play it is gone. I was really excited about polish and finnish campaigns, but im afraid they'll never release.

I think what a lot of people don't understand except the long-time players is yes while HLL has good player numbers we need to dive deeper and think what kind of players are now saturating the game? You guessed it! the casual players, the ones who are broken down into two categories ranging from the players who may not know how to play but are attempting to learn and become great team members. And then there're the other players, the ones who could care less and give absolutely no fucks about how to play the properly or as intended, squad-less squads, mutes and straight up NPC mentality. T17 has shown us a little glimpse of their greed in my opinion for the first time when it comes to HLL with this new update (glorified patch with a crappy cosmetic DLC). I knew this was going to be a problem wit this new budget skirmish mode they are attempting to introduce and all these cosmetics, pushing out the British only to be left in the dirt just like the Soviet Union, the bugs are are STILL present in the game from 2-3 updates ago. For me it's gotten to a point where I am fighting my own team rather than the enemy for some common sense to take place in a match and this isn't helped by T17's agenda. Also on a side note, the fact Cover Six is no longer developing despite having a short run with HLL worries me that the game is now being developed by contracted individuals or groups instead of a solid dev team. My advice? Put HLL down and go over to Squad 44, it's making a bit of a comeback recently and the developers care more about player experience and admins actually enforcing server rules to make sure people are playing their part.

I really don't see how the game is ruined rn as people talk about it. I am a level 10 AT and 8+ on almost every class, and, on private servers, even 'low' levels (think 30) know their thing. The only thing that annoys me as fuck is the auto balancing of the game. Why the fuck can one team be full of level 5ish people and the other of 100+ only? It happened more than 5 times I think.
