My brother died six years ago. We saw a lot of movies together. I like to think of this movie as being the final movie we watched together. It wasn't, but I like to think it was. A fine movie. David Mackenzie also directed the equally impressive 'Starred Up.'

I love this movie, the writing was spot on and their depiction of west texas and the southwest in general was spot on. The ending was near perfect, couldn't have been written or acted any better.

Why do I love this movie? There isn't a more realistic and accurate portrayal of life in Texas. The small towns feel EXACTLY how they actually feel and look. It's just perfect.

Really appreciated the ending. Pine's character showed his intelligence and resolve as his fate doesn't have to end in a blaze of gunfire. It did for his brother, but that was inevitable. Bridge's character knows he's been outwitted and the only satisfaction he gets is letting Pine's character know that he 'knows' what he did.

One of my favorite films! I think it touches on modern day poverty well. And I love Chris Pine's monologue and the ending of this overall. It really wraps up the themes of the film well.

Criminally underrated

One of the best movie of last decade. They did so much with so little in this movie 🍿

My favorite part in the whole movie was when Ben Forster uses his machine gun on the guys chasing them. Bang on scene.

One of my favorite modern-day westerns, along with No Country for Old Men.

Its funny how I could never get into westerns but now this movie is one of my all-time favorites.

Hands down coldest part of the movie is when the little brothers says why are you helping me and big bro says cause you asked lil brother cause you asked

Loved the nod to the old westerns in this one with the bank robbers and Texas Rangers. The chase scenes and the shootouts heck they even had a cattle drive with the writer Taylor herding the cattle away from the fire. My favorite new western and as always love The Dude in everything her does!

My favorite film of that year.

Phenomenal film! I thought about it for days afterward. The clear sign of a good film. The dialogue was just too good. So well written and acted and everything else.

I found this movie about a month ago and watched it 3 times. Really strong and interesting characters and a great story. I love a great western and even thought it’s not the “traditional” kind, it still resonates as one. The older waitress scene in the restaurant was absolutely fantastic…”We don’t serve no goddamn trout!” 🤣 Definitely one of my new favorites!

As you stated, this movie had a lot of themes and subplots. Not as many as Jaws, but more serious. Jeff Bridge’s constant racist humor hurt his partner, but the partner didn’t argue, because of the affection and respect between them. On the other hand, one word, “chief”, almost starts a fight between two strangers in a casino. Reminds us that we need to constantly be on guard about racist attitudes and language. Stupidity doesn’t always get called out.

This movie was not even shot in Texas but still managed to showcase Texas. Great movie ❤

Excellent movie... Like you said, character depth, great writing... I really liked this one

Until watching your analysis I never realized how much this movie reminds me of another The Highwaymen (2019). Specifically that the law men in the movie do not sympathize with the bandits, but there is something in my mind (and some study of Bonnie and Clyde) that the pursuers at least have an understanding of the motive of the thieves. I think that is what makes both of these films worth watching.

Just found your channel with your All Quiet on the Western Front review. Subscribed right away as I think I'm going to learn a lot about movies I haven't seen before from your channel. Hell or High water was an excellent film. You may also like Sicario and Wind River.

It also has a similar theme as the western once upon a time in the west where the railroad companies are ending an era where the railroad companyies are the corporations from back then.. I don't know if it's deliberate but I saw a similariry and once upon a time in the west is a western as well.. Very nice review and a very good movie

Phenomenal film imo. Love it. I do think his brother lying to him about the will was kinda f'ed up. But he knew that he uad to say the mother only left things to him only. But I love the ending as well. Jeff bridges and Chris have a great scene at the end. Another thing I love about this film is that it introduced me to Colter wall music. Colter has one of the best voices I've heard. He doesn't look like you would think after hearing his voice.

One of the best movies of the last years - regardless of genre!

It looked like they were going to shoot each other in the end, with the sheriff almost reaching for his gun slowly, and the serious examining eye contact, then his ex wife drone onto the driveway. Wonder what was happening, or would have happened there...

Chris Pine may own the only character without depth. Bridges, Ben Foster and Gil Birmingham characters have so much depth.

Great writing and acting all around. But Ben Foster steals the show. He is a monster but you root for him. He is a psycopath but also a loving brother. He made this movie for me, what an antihero.

It's a good thing that so many people are talking about its ending.

Jeff Bridges maybe gives his best here, especially when his partner is shot by the insane brother, who is highly dangerous. the Texas Rangers have no more love for Banks than Bank robbers. it's like a strange triangle. one of the more chilling scenes is when, in the Casino, after the eldest brother makes a harmless reference to a Commanche indian about his heritage as a plains bad ass by blood, actually sort of a compliment, but the indian faces him up close, saying "do you know what Commanche means?" I can't paraphrase it, but it's mean, and violent. Foster, who started the half-ass conversation, takes on a menacing look straight into the Commanche's eyes, and says "then I am a Commanche"! his Irish/Celtic looks belie, but mean what he says. Foster is the brother who can go from half-ass bullshitting, to homicide, it seems. getting on his bad side is unhealthy .

Love this movie!

Loved Hell or High Water, I think Taylor Sheridan's trilogy of Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River is probably my favorite unofficial trilogy at the moment.

One of my favorite films

In this movie, if some weirdo with a strange haircut confronts a rural gas station owner about flipping a quarter and what time he closes, the weirdo would get shot in the face.

I like the brotherhood aspect of the movie I had a pig for a brother

By the details offered in the film on Tanners background, it seems to me he was never in the military. The circumstances of his dads death, his criminal record, etc. I think he was an outlaw from day one, considered he was an Iraq vet. Toby seemed more like a vet to me

The banks are definitely the bad guy in this movie, they are trying to foreclose on the property.

Minor correction, I believe Bridges and Birmingham are Texas Rangers, and not a County Sherriff & Deputy.

This is an exceptional movie---from the acting, to directing, as well as the script and the issues it raises. For those of you that think Jeff Bridges' character was racist....man, you absolutely miss the point. He was confronting racism and giving his deputy the opportunity to discuss it. He said that his teasing was the thing his partner would miss the most when he retired; that could very well have been true. Of particular amusement was seeing how all the good old boys thought they were heroes, yet they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with their pistols. And they got REAL sweaty when one guy with guts and firepower stood up to them. That's not to say that I don't condone violence; I don't. I've seen way too much of it as a Special Education teacher; in my experience, violent people feel ENTITLED to their cruelty. I've seen this movie twice and would watch it again. It's excellent and the ending is both logical and satisfying.

I like Taylor Sheridan's work

Great movie. Nothing is over-egged. All subtle in its execution. We root for both the robbers and the police.

Better than no country for old men

They are Texas Rangers, not Sheriffs.

Ben Foster was too good in this one. It's sad that most of the credit goes to Chris.
