Didn't started the video yet. But The schedule was definitely so terrible. Episode 9 was overall decent (which idk how they did it). Hope for a better planning and schedule for season 2. And more good staff to back it up

I actually think it's BECAUSE of the very flat and simple faces that they're struggling with staying on model. When there's zero other reference points or shapes to the face other than the outline, it becomes easy to accidentally place the mouth/eyes a few millimetres too high or low.

being a mappa fan, its painful to see how they managed the schedule for this show..

Judging by the pacing of this show I think it will cover the entire manga in 3 parts each one having 12 or 13 episodes... hopefully next parts will get a upgrade in terms of visual quality as a lot of people are following it ...if this show gets profit then why not?

As a fan of some of MAPPA’s other works and of the Hells Paradise manga, I feel like this is a sad representation a great manga, and it is a sad let down of the expectations I had from a good studio and a great story to work with

I just wanted to say this. People need to understand the difference between hating and criticism. Criticism exist so these things won't happen to other projects. It's called saying what the problem are so the person can learn from those mistakes to be even better. If where not aloud to have criticism then most anime will have ex arm or 7ds s3 level quality.

MAPPA could have made this show as banger as JJK or CSM. The only downside it has (that I can think of) is that its fanbase is smaller compared to the other two. The story and the manga are top notch, an A tier at least. Some of the manga panels are absolutely gorgeous to look at, and it was a real disappointment when the show failed to deliver even those few stills. I hope MAPPA considers making season 2 better.

Everything you said about the visuals is true & noticeable… However, I still do enjoy the show, even if it's really sad to see how badly it got treated by the production committee with the schedule (which ISN'T studio MAPPA's fault, btw). Overall, it's a nice and enjoyable anime. It just could've been much more.

The Animation I think is the second biggest problem of this. The first one still being the horrendous Storyboarding. I'll start with quoting a Line from Shingo Natsume on Monologues. He says, "I've felt lately, characters tend to say anything at all that's on their mind, or what they are going do next, through monologues, and I don't think that's very entertaining to watch". Hell's Paradise biggest weakness is their monologues. The team never tried to chop down those from the source material which resulted in producing the awful and boring storyline. The episode 5 is a prime example of the poor execution of written narration into picture format. Animation or picture is a medium where you can say the best things with just a movement but the decided to waste that on Monologues.

Yeah this production is messed up for sure 😭 It's a disgrace to manga at this point,like why?? Wanabu's worse decision was to pick up this show, let's just hope season 2 will get a better schedule

i was initially saying it looked like a 7/10, especially after watching episode 9 last week. on my adjective tier list. that translates to "decent". i said the same thing about shingeki season 4 part 1. but watching the most recent episode of HP, then rewatching s4 p1 episode 5, 6 and 7 the same day, i realized how wrong i was to compare the 2 shows. shingeki has strong and detailed drawings most of the time. very good effects, decent compositing and very good storyboards. i cant say the same about anything in hells paradise outside of the fire. it dropped to a 6/10. painfully average animation with moments of badness

Given how it was named one of the big 3 of dark shonen by the fanbase, I would've been way happier if mappa's team alternated JJK > CSM > Hell's Paradise. Yeah, there'd be more downtime in between the shows, but at least everytime we get a show, we KNOW it's gonna look good. Even episode 9 which was the best animated episode in the series so far, I found to be underwhelming. Not because the animation itself is bad (it was good, but not good enough for the emotional weight of the scene), but because Hell's Paradise has in my opinion the best premise and setting out of the 3. And to bring that setting to life, the show needs to FEEL alive. The trees are supposed to look disgustingly vibrant, while at the same time beautiful. The show seems like it's too scared to go all the way yet always tries something it can't pull off properly. All I'll do now is just pray season 2 will be better animated. Edit: What I mean by disgustingly vibrant but beautiful can be seen in the opening. The visuals there are beautiful but like Gabimaru said, there is no rhyme or reason to it. Just because it's a foggy night doesn't mean the fight had to be dark and dreary when the story was painting it as hype and intense, nothing visually interesting aside from the animation was happening. Didn't help that they tried to hide the background using lots of fog and dust.

the opening's visuals are really nice and beautiful ngl. if the anime itself did have that same level of quality i would have enjoyed it wayyy more, it's just really hard not to notice the animation but well- the schedule is uh...💀

i jsut cant agree while its underwhelming for a mappa show. i really do think it looks fine. like yeah some parts look not good or whatever but overall it really is fine at least the story is in tact it could have been worse. im still very much enjoying it. a good show it is

Most of the staff is coming off of Chainsaw man, which had a brutal schedule, and then had to instantly pivot to Jujutsu Kaisen S2 and/or Hell’s Paradise. Coming off a crunch and launching directly into another one means the animation has a fare share of technical issues (you’ll see sakuga Twitter say there’s “lots of melt”, which means a drawings shape isn't consistent from frame to frame and it gets wobbly). Sacrifices have been made as well to make sure that the production can get done remotely on time, so the storyboarding, quality of drawing, and even quality of movement hasn’t been great so they can save time and focus on scenes that need it (Gabimaru showing his skills in episode 2, for instance). At the end of the day, what it really means is we’re gonna get an adaption that is “fine”, but not technically on the level it could be (I.e. JJK, CSM, Vinland Saga) because the staff is stretched so thin they can’t quite hide it as well as normal. Another way to think about is that what a lot of fans expected (and hyped up) was a show that would look like the opening, and instead we get a technically passable effort by an underpaid team barely scraping by trying to make it work, but the show isn’t likely going to live up to that potential even it’s best moments simply due to the circumstances at hand

I mean, animating is already such an endeavor, I do feel like they just have too many projects to juggle right now. Maybe that's just my noob perspective and there are ways to manage all of this with the resources Mappa has atm, but I don't know...

I've been having this feeling from Hell's Paradise for a while now. Thank you for explaining it more concretely. The off-model shots and that girl crying especially was too much to ignore.

if im not wrong back in december when it was revealed that jigo will come out in spring a lot of leakers were confused cuz they got info that aot was gonna air first and then the staff was gonna help with jigo and then in january aot was said to come out in march and while they wanted to release it all at once they had to split it so if this is right then not only is the schedule for jigo terrible but also the staff is incomplete

Ep 7 and 9 imo are the best looking episodes, they had relatively less off model cuts and the action (ep9) was pretty good. Although the rest of the episodes was seriously hard to watch so hopefully the next season will actually get resources and talent to work on it. Still tho, im baffled that the same ppl who said CSM, Aot had bad visuals are now praising HP for its "amazing animation" , makes you wonder whether they actually care about animation or just flashy fights

Mappa has spread themselves so thin it is impossible to produce a good looking anime when you have this many other projects to do. The lack of resources which is the amount of animators, especially talented enough to handle fight is not enough. The amount of people required for AD work is not enough when the schedule is this fucked which causes the outsourcing of AD and even KA parts to finish episodes. I believe this is the show that will make some people doubt Mappa's current business model or at the very least Jigoku manga fans because this manga, this story, Yuji Kaku's art deserved so much better than this mess. Shingeki's AniP is on Jigoku and we know that the priority for Titan is definitely higher than this.

You briefly showed the shot of just Sagiri's eyes from ep 6 and to me that was the most artistically interesting shot in the show. Gave off similar vibes to a scene in Rose of Versailles.

Lol i came to this video after finishing ep 6. This was sooo jarring. The theme song's animation looked amazing, on par with chainsaw man and jjk. That's the entire reason i considered watching the show, i didn't expect any amazing story. By ep 6, i felt like i was watching some different show, it felt like a dollar store version of what i was promised. I did some comparisons and lol i know i may seem spoiled for caring this much, i ain't no animator. But the look of the show just genuinely looked underwhelming i had a hard time staying hyped the way i decently was in episode 1. I wish we got the show the theme song was marketting, and not this!

Most of the "spreads" were very nice, like when somthing important happens (I forgot what they were called in animation but in manga they are called spreads)

I agree on the stiffness and lack of movement and also abt the compositing, but most of the shots you showed as having bad art were almost all passable or decent, while the storyboards and composition are kinda weak, like this close up at 0:17 that's just well drawn and communicates this characters personality well, and abt the eyes and art in general there is a lot of inconsistencies but they didn't take me out of the show too much and i'm an artist myself so i do notice if the slightest thing is wrong more than your average person (i could be biased and too forgiving since i know firsthand how hard it is to draw a single good drawing let alone multiple ones for just 1s of animation). I do think you are way too harsh on it, it looks passable it aint good but it aint bad. However i am still very disappointed with this show in terms of visuals, i only watched it because of how good the op looked expecting another Csm looking show, looking back it was naive of me considering what the studio was previously and is currently working on.

Yeah, I just feel anything that you say in this video. It feels inconsistent, movement really unnatural, art direction sometimes feels off and weak, storyboard kinda mid, and I really hate the character acting at this anime, it's really flat and weak even in sad or serious scene. What I like about this anime in terms of animation production is only the Opening Scene. Yeah this anime needs a better schedule, they have great source material, but bad at execution.

I will literally be happy if they stop the show now and get back in the lab the manga is too good for me to be praying for decent animation every week. It’s so disappointing yet ik how hard they work. Just wish they could have taken the time to rlly give the show the animation it deserves bc the story is very beautiful. After I seen episode 9 vs what I thought I would see I just pray they stop it before we get to see the other tensen fight or it will be a sorry season as a whole. I thought it was strange how the animation quality dropped off a few episodes into the season. I’m still enjoying the show but some cuts are pretty bad. I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to animation, but I’ve seen enough good animation and composition in anime to know this isn’t it, for the most part. Kinda sucks because some of the voice acting and background art stood out as really well done to me, and the poor animation at times really distracts from some of the amazing work done on this show. Either way, I’m still enjoying it for the most part. Also, your analysis really surprised me, really great work.

Episode 9 is definitely my favorite episode of the show so far. Gabimaru's fight vs. that tensen was great.

Even with "okay" animation its still million times better than boring as fck Semen Slayer Fights,character development, design, motivation, plot, storytelling They killed a no name guy and it was much darker than whole Mugen movie

I did notice this but didnt really put it into words, you explained it well. The first episode looked really great, and it slowy dropped off which kinda made the quality decrease unniticable until you realise, wait this looks kinda shit compared to what is started with.The off model frames are definitely the most noticable flaw, but yeah, everything just looks kinda unremarkable. I wouldnt say it bad but its definitely very 5/10.

episode 6 was as far as I got. I think mappa is one of the best studios so it almost makes show with animation this poor hit worse because I know they can do so much better. Seems clear to me based on the number of hits an how often the animation is great that it's mostly a matter of too many major projects at once. Wish whey were willing to delay and improve the animation before releasing to prevent this.

What do you expect from an anime that is meant to fill the empty void in mappas schedule. Im not saying you're wrong but like this is an anime that was made for the sole purpose of filling the spring season.

Definitely one of Mappa's weakest project. Stiff animation, many off model design, boring storyboard, etc. The problem is for seasonal anime, this adaptation is underwhelming. Hell even MHA season 5 and 6 are more consistent this (20+ episode per season)....or weekly anime like One Piece also more consistent than this... like we're not expecting something godtier like tengoku daimakyou, just atleast be more consistent. MAPPA really needs to stop taking so much project if they don't have proper schedule and team...

Are they... trying to maybe fuse anime with Edo period art? Some of the colors and wildly washed out backgrounds and character shots (8:55 for example) remind me a bit of Edo drawings.

the flat drawings and poor eyes is what bothered me the most with recent episodes. nothing has shading its just one fill with a color for the entire face. the faces are all over the place, but the eye distance... oh man, horrible

I guess this is what happens when a studio gets too many great series all at once, some have to be sacrificed and it happened to Jigo.

It's ironic since you're last hell paradise video was about how not bad it was. Hell paradise shows as a example on why biting off more then you can chew is a bad idea.

I’ve said this multiple times on other comment sections but I knew this season wouldn’t be of the best quality The first part of the story isn’t anything impressive. It’s a slow setup for the big payoff that comes way later (I liked it but it’s very clear the general audience hate the current parts of the story, seeing how the most criticised aspect of it on mal is that the story is generic and boring and people have even gone as far as to compare it to trash like deadman wonderland or btoom) And of course this is coming out while mappa is animating basically everything Their big boys, jjk, csm, aot and vinland need priority So a weird start in terms of story and the general production hell that’s going on behind the scenes, creates a season that’s not of standard mappa quality Of course by no means would I say that it’s hard to watch or some shit like that but yet again, I had my expectations low for the first part Quality has gone up a bit now that the plot is reaching the parts where it truly gets interesting. But I’m pretty sure that later seasons will have significantly better animation and overall visuals since that’s where the big fights take place

After ep 6 it's really hard for me to continue watching it they really butchered yuji kaku's work and one of my fav new gen Really sad to see the state of this production even having some veterans in the team they can't do much with the terrible schedule and from clips of new eps it's even more inconsistent than first few eps

Hell's Paradise isn't getting the JJK VINLAND SAGA AND CSM treatment. I can barely tell that it's a Mappa project. Can't complain too much tho,at least the show is decent.
