I was on a “life is strange” binge, so transitioning from season 1 to this prequel made me unable to recognize the voice of Chloe

I've been thinking about how my first reaction was to say that Rachel's character was inconsistent and i didn't understand her personality. But now I think I cracked it: Firewalk? Coincidence. She met Chloe by accident after just wanting to see the show like any edgy teen would. They hit it off. Rachel considers Chloe a friend now; the next day, she actively seeks her out. We see her saying to Chloe "great, you're here!" when she arrives at the beginning, meaning she might have been waiting, or at least expecting Chloe. (SPOILERS AHEAD) At this point, Rachel already suspects her father, and wants to clear things up. She has a plan to spy on him, but she doesn't want to do it alone in case things get hard for her. So she invites Chloe along, since she liked her, and Chloe is different from the Vortex Club people and therefore won't likely cause drama if things get bad. But Rachel is very secretive, as she's shown since the first game, keeping her relationship with Franck a secret from Chloe, with whom she might or might not have been flirting with. So it's normal for her not to want to ask an aquaintance right away "hey, I need emotional support for a very personal issue. Wanna come with?". We know Rachel is more private than that -- so, she tries to make all this into a fun adventure. She tells Chloe she wants to skip school, and invites her on this cool train ride, where they play game together and build a bond together. I hope it's genuine from Rachel's part, but at this point, they barely know each other, so I guess I can't tell. So! Rachel has the guise of being a fun, open, and creative person to get Chloe and her to where she wants them to be for the next part of her plan. They get on the mountain and Rachel explains the new game, and nobody suspects anything except rich kid brattiness when the machine eats up her money. This is where people might say her character is inconstant: because why would such a fun and carefree girl that likes to play games and confess stuff on a train with a stranger, be someone to get moody when some random game doesn't work? Simple: because fun-Rachel ws a façade. When Rachel gets mad, we see a bit of the turmoil inside, the real reason why top of the class, charismatic club leader Rachel Amber would skip class. We get a hint that none of this was just some random idea she had that morning: Rachel orchestrated it. And she's angry and upset because if the machine doesn't work, she won't be able to spy on her father like she had meant to. I think the second part that people disliked was after theor realization that Rachel's dad (SPOILERS) was with the woman in white. They don't understand; Rachel was a fun-loving girl, then threw a fit over a coin; then she showed her theatre side and made games again. But now, she's being moody and asking to steal wine for no reason at all, and refusing to explain why? So we don't get why she would suddenly be so closed-off and moody: doesn't she trust Chloe? What the heck is up with her? But let's not forget that Rachel has been stated to be a chameleon that "everybody likes", she's insanely popular, and we see how she manages that right here: she becomes what others want he to be. She's all fun and games and skipping class with Chloe since this is what Chloe wants from a friend. She's also a charismatic boss lady with the theatre people, and she's polite but ruthless with Victoria. But we also know from those scenes and context from the first game that Rachel lies, a lot. She hides herself under façades and isn't the same with everybody: we the player can see how inconsistent her character is because we see her from afar: but if Chloe and Rachel had met any other day? There would have been no emotional turmoil to show us the real Rachel, and she would have stayed happy-go-lucky Rachel for the whole game. But Rachel had a weakness in her front: her emotions. We see that when she's angry, she destroys, she burns. She slaps the machine, she steals wine from a couple on a date, she plans to leave her mother, she even makes a whole forest catch on fire. We see how Rachel really is: destructive. This is foreshadowed by how Rachel's father talks about the woman in white, and can be applied to Rachel, too: destructive, always out for more, fun-loving and perfect at first glance but can't ever be satisfied by one person. Too much passion to be contained. So, yeah. Basically: Rachel is a chameleon and adapts to people she likes (fun and gamey with Chloe; sexy and fiesty with Franck; polite and submissive with Principal Wells). But that's a façade, and who she really is is obvious in fits of anger she had throughout the game. She seems inconsistent because we see her as a whole, and because we witness her anger. That, and within context, the whole hissyfit at the mountain is understandable: the whole day was just a way to go spy on her dad. There had been no games, or no fun, just for the heck of it.

Anyone else realize how fucked up the storyline actually is?? Spoliers for people who haven't watched the original season. But we literally sat and watched as CHLOE DUG UP RACHEL'S BONES IN THE JUNKYARD... It wasn't that sad except for feeling bad for Chloe, but now we are delving into Chloe and Rachel's relationship before all the shit happened.. I actually get teary eyed as I fall in love with Rachel's character but then she says some shit like "When I'm older I've always wanted to see New York." And then I remember that she's literally dead... Thanks Game. Sorry I had to rant, I really do love this game, it's just kinda fucked up when you think about it, like me :) If you read this far have a nice day. ;)

I kinda understand why they gave chloe a different voice actor. She sounds younger this way, which makes sense considering the fact that she's like 15 in this game, whereas in the original game she's 18. Edit: Y'all, I know it's because the OG voice actress was on a strike. I just meant that this actress did a decent job and her voice is logically more fitting because of the time frame.

Rachel’s story was sorta comforting to me. I got in a car accident and I still remember the smell of the rain and the presence of my best friend next to me. I remember how calm he was telling me things would be ok. In a sort of way I relate. She loves her dad, and I love my best friend.

People expect Chloe to do and say the right things, but not everyone can think as rationally. In Chloe’s case - she’s failing out of high school, doing drugs, skipping (a place I’ve been before) - she doesn’t know how to grasp all the change in her life. Her only solution is to act out, because that’s all she knows how to do. She acts tough (although she gets easily flustered around Rachel), but she’s not very confidant - she doesn’t have much self-esteem. It makes sense. It’s not always the right thing, but I understand why.
