It's been twenty long years since Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door first dropped on the Gamecube and the remake has finally arrived. Has Nintendo successfully reopened this chapter of Mario's history, or is it a tome that should have been buried in the back of a dusty library? The only way to find out is to play!
Welcome to the Nintendo Switch remake of PAPER MARIO: THE THOUSAND-YEAR DOOR!

The curses in this game remind me of the curses in Link's Awakening where the bat "curses" you to have a higher max inventory of certain items and says "ha, now look at all that junk you have to carry"

16:34 SAAAAAAAAME! I didn’t know what “primer” meant as a kid, and when every party member we got had “primer” in their tutorial, I was like “Man, when are we getting someone who isn’t a primer??”

So excited to see what you guys think of this remake! This was my favorite game a little girl and HFC was my first introduction to Let's Plays. Can't wait to hear what you guys think of it! Oh! Also, little secret I discovered, if you take Flurrie to space behind Isnails hideout and use her wind power on the back of the building you can get into the back of the Trouble Center and see who's running it 😊

31:54 found it weird that they would take out Goombas hitting on Goombella. I mean they're bad guys and Goombella is supposed to win anyway. The tone feels way off and feels like they didn't know what to do with the conversation. It feels more like censoring the past than an improvement.

As someone who basically got into video games at the start of the Gamecube's life, this was my first Mario spin-off, so of course I've been devouring this game because it's a good remake and I really loved the original(even if I played it back when I was a dumb kid). Glad to see you guys doing it!

Ah the Mario game where me and a few friends compare the audience in the battle system to Twitch/KZfaq Viewers. I really need to play this for myself one day.

So happy to finally see the first part of this playthrough after you made the announcement here on KZfaq! I played the original on the GameCube, but my neglect to grind for experience made me under leveled against the final boss, and as a result, I never properly beat it. I will definitely be picking up the remake in the future and make up for that, but for now, I will enjoy the playthrough!

14:20 Toadsworth last appearance was Mario and Luigi Dream Team 11 years ago that's not a port or remake of an old game or smash bros.

I have a complicated relationship with Dream Team. I was loving it when I played it years ago, but then I got to the final Giant Luigi fight against Bowser, and I couldn’t for the life of me control the, for lack of a better term, “Beyblade” section. No matter how carefully I tilted my 3DS in the direction I wanted, Luigi always seemed to go off in the opposite direction. This went on for a while until I went: “You know what? Screw this, I quit”. And all these years later, I haven’t gone back to it.

The hammer attack, the chase where you have dodge different enemy's and one of the bro's being thrown and having to catch them fucked me up that I with no shame switched to easy mode.

Got this on launch day, one of my favorite games ever. Feels so good playing it again and looking even better than ever. I always level up BP first thing until I hit the cap, having a bunch of powerful badges helps offset the low HP and FP (along with the HP and FP badges). Best way to do that is to grind Amazee Dayzees after beating Chapter 4, they fall quickly to Art Attack. I get all the available Star Pieces after each chapter as well. Getting Quick Change and the Power Plus badges as early as possible is delightful.

Coming back to these as I make my way through the game. I watched an LP done by Ted from BSC years and years ago,, but I don't remember that much of it. Loved the Spider-Man 2 playthrough that y'all did so of course I have to catch up with these parts as I progress because NTom and Tanner bounce off each other so well.

@@HellfireComms Sorry, I'm still waking up. That is Spar and he definitely wasn't in the Spider-Man 2 playthrough. He was in some of the bonus parts of the KH2 run which I also enjoyed and he is a great commentator and the both of you bounce off each other well too. Not sure how I made that mix up other than not being caffeinated enough yet.

ngl, NTom, your voice is perfect for Lord Crump lol I played the original TTYD _WAY_ before I played PM64 and never played it on original hardware, so I agree with you, Spar. I'm not the biggest fan of PM64 either

I can't imagine someone not liking 64 but having TTYD in their top 5. I prefer 64, but I definitely consider them in the same ballpark. My throughline is that 64 is more consistent and TTYD has higher highs and lower lows.

This is the first time in my years on the internet that I have seen someone express the exact same opinion I have when it comes to PM1 vs TTYD. I've always found the love for TTYD a little bit odd when it's a game that, in my opinion, is kind of a pain to replay. Every chapter has what feels like either redundant (yet mandatory) or excessive (and also mandatory) backtracking, or mechanics that are either buggy (The Punis in the Gamecube release) or just not...very fun to engage with (I love Chapter 3, but its gameplay is extremely repetitive no matter how many gimmicks they stack on top of it). I also feel like TTYD's difficulty and stat balancing isn't as solid as PM1, as TTYD is both potentially much harder and also easier to break in half compared to PM1. That isn't to say I think PM1 is smooth sailing the whole way though, as Chapter 6 is effectively one long trading sequence back and forth, but I've always found TTYD to have a substantially larger list of "Ugh, this part" sections than the first game did. I appreciate its story and sheer personality, but I also think there's a beauty in PM1's simple, and exceptionally "Mario", for lack of a proper term, story and world which hasn't really been in any Mario RPG since. Even the simpler mechanics like the lower level cap and partners not having HP was something I appreciated about the first game, mostly because it felt like the game was very tightly designed around those things. That said, while I haven't finished the TTYD remake (Just finished Chapter 4 as of writing this comment), I can already say that the tweaks and alterations (mostly) have bumped TTYD up significantly on my Mario RPG rankings, even if I'd still put it below the first game. Most of the changes aren't very significant, but there are tons of them, and they go a long way in making the experience just so much smoother. (There are some changes I don't like, but they're a small sacrifice by comparison for me) That said, someone liking TTYD and not the first game doesn't feel too strange to me, as they are tonally extremely different from each other. And, if Spar played TTYD before PM1 (I think he said that but I don't remember now), then PM1 could feel very quaint or too basic by comparison. Particularly when TTYD reuses (or, dare I say, rehashes) a lot of tropes, patterns, and even gags from PM1, experiencing them in reverse order could make them feel more boring or dull, as well. But that's just speculation, so I dunno. Regardless, I'm really happy this remake exists and I am hopeful for the future of this series. Cautiously. Because the last time I was hopeful was when Sticker Star was revealed as Paper Mario for Nintendo 3DS, and we all know how that turned out. (Though I am one of the weirdos who actually really enjoyed Super Paper Mario and defended it when it came out)

@@Leatherhead64 God I love getting long comments like this, these are always a joy to read I'm pretty sure I did play TTYD before 64 since I actually didn't do much with my N64. I think I only owned a few games for it and that didn't even include Smash 64, I just rented that multiple times.

@@Sparanda314 Aww, well thank you, Spar! I'm glad someone enjoys my unsolicited musings for a change. I tend to have a problem with rambling when it comes to the few things I'm passionate about. (And Paper Mario is a series that is very near and dear to my heart, being my introduction to my favorite video game genre) And that's really interesting that you likely played TTYD before the first game. Were any of my suppositions anywhere near the mark? Or are there other things about the original PM that didn't click with you like TTYD did?
@Sparanda314

@@Leatherhead64 Yeah I think the overall simplicity and lack of TTYD's added stuff is what did it. The lack of superguard and partner HP are a big part of it. I do plan to give 64 another shot once I finish TTYD though.

I prefer 64 over og TTYD But this isn't og TTYD, this is the remake. And honestly i think the remake is amazing. Origami King is still my favorite paper mario title but I definitely have a higher of this than og This games OST is godlike Dream Team is pretty great And YES Book of Mario Thousands of Doors! Love that mod. Kept getting reminded of the translated lines playing the remake lmao In regards to Superguarding, from what ive heard from folks SUPER familiar with the fine details of og, in this game the frames basically math out to the OGs Superguard window with 2 simplifiers equipped (in other words, its ever so slightly easier in the remake). I think

When it comes to script changes in games I don’t mind it at all since most of the time I barely catch it until someone points it out. I feel it’s a bit of a mountain out of a molehill situation cause a lot people treat it as the end of the world especially when it comes Japanese to English changes.
