Great Big Story

7 жыл бұрын

Burrowing owls are curious birds. While they're no mammoths-maxing out at 10 inches in height and half a pound in weight-these nocturnal predators definitely stand out. Long legs, bright, beady eyes, and a preference for nesting underground set these owls apart. They prefer open grasslands or deserts and are even known to nest in peculiar places, such as golf courses or airport fields. But habitat loss is contributing to a steady decline in their populations. Can this unique avian weather the storm?

I'm just thinking about the owl's eye sensitivity with the lights everywhere. I don't know much about owls but the large pupils tell me it's vision is engineered to see well in darkness.

JwmswimmerROTMG These owls are mostly active during dawn and dusk, but they also like to go about their business during the daytime. I think you may have a point that the owl might not like those studio lights very much, but it probably won't get eye damage or anything. If these birds can handle harsh Florida sunshine, I think it will be fine.

Slowlikehoney Too If you find a burrowing owl nest, contact your local authorities. Depending on where you live, these owls may be protected by law. If so, a protective fence of sorts will be built around the burrow to protect it. If not, you can make your own with stakes and string. You can also watch the nest and report any harassment of the owls to local authorities. If you want to attract burrowing owls to your yard, first make sure it is safe and relatively free from pesticide use and predators such as dogs, cats, snakes, or raccoons. Also be sure that it isn't too loud or frequently disturbed by activities such as yard work or parties. If you think that the space in your yard meets these requirements, you should leave about 1-3 sq feet of sandy soil exposed for the owls to make their burrow. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can also start the burrow off yourself and add a perch near it to make it more attractive to the owls. It's really great that you want to help these magnificent birds and that you don't take them for granted.

Domesticate them and they'll never go extinct; the species with the highest populations non-surprisingly are all the ones we humans use as food or keep as pets. What would be so bad about keeping these things as pets? Then at least they're not going extinct.
