The Sixth Sense Movie Description:
Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. He is too afraid to tell anyone about his anguish, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequences for client and therapist are a jolt that awakens them both to something unexplainable.
The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist whose patient (Haley Joel Osment) claims he can see and talk to the dead.
Released by Buena Vista Pictures (through its Hollywood Pictures label) on August 6, 1999, critics praised its performances (particularly those of Willis, Osment, and Toni Collette), atmosphere, direction and plot twist. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Shyamalan, Best Supporting Actor for Osment, and Best Supporting Actress for Collette. The film established Shyamalan for a thriller film and introduced the cinema public to his traits, most notably his affinity for surprise endings.
It was the second-highest-grossing film of 1999, taking about $293 million in the US and $379 million in other markets.

I love at the end when Bruce Willis tells his wife “everything will be different tomorrow”. He realized part of her depression probably came from him literally haunting her. He kept opening his office door, that’s why that table was in front of it. She felt his presence all the time, she just couldn’t move on with him there. But tomorrow, it’ll be a little bit better.

I hosted the Scottish premiere of this film. It blew my mind, and a couple of weeks I took my Mum. About an hour in, she said "I've figured out the deal. He's dead". Hey, we have the same Mom! 😄 No kidding : when we watched Scream, while the opening credits were still running, she said,"I don't like the looks of *this character*." Yup, it was the killer. She's done that a million times. Once we were watching something and I was too sleepy to stay up any longer, so I said,"I'm going to bed, so who's the killer?" She said,"The limo driver." I shrugged,"Good enough for me. Goodnight." 😉 Witches, I tell you.

The ghost girl's mother had Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. It's a mental problem where the mother (It's usually always the woman, and I don't know why....I've yet to find anything where a father is doing this) injures their kid by making them sick or claiming they have some rare disorder that no one's discovered yet and drags their poor kid to doctor after doctor after doctor, unneccessary surgery and drugs....because the mother wants to be the center of attention and what would bring out the most attention but your child being sick with who knows what. ....go look up Gypsy Rose Blanchard, that'll explain it way better than I can

I always assumed it was FDIA as well but it doesn't have to be a mother or even a parent. There are cases of adult children doing this to elderly parents, as well as doctors making patients sicker in order to "find the miracle cure" and get attention and praise. Richard Angelo and Kristen Gilbert would be good examples of that. It's also a fairly rare disorder so we don't have a huge amount information on it.

The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't cheat. Now that you know what's up you can go back and watch it again and all the clues are right there in plain sight. How no one ever acknowledges him except Cole, how he is always wearing the same clothes, why his wife is depressed and always watching their old wedding videos. I think we all feel dumb for not catching it sooner because it seems so obvious, but the reality is very few people ever pick up on it the first time. This movie is that well done... and the acting IS phenomenal from the entire cast!

@PowerDiva

@@luketimewalker does she though? Or do we just assume she looks at him? She cannot see him if he's dead, so she obviously is just looking in his direction, perhaps at the front door as she is getting ready to leave. But that is what is brilliant about this movie... everything makes sense once you know the story. But before we learn it, our brain is trained to fill in the blanks and so that scene in the restaurant, we just assume she looks right at him (and sees him) when she doesn't.

@PowerDiva

@@luketimewalker I guess it's a matter of perspective. I didn't see it that way, because she just as easily could be looking towards the door as she's gathering her things to leave. I do the same thing. He just happened to be sitting there so it's easy to think oh, she looked right at him. Which is of course what we think the first time we watch it... but it's just one of those craftily constructed moments that is designed to make us assume things that aren't actually happening. I don't see it as a cheating moment.

I had just started working in a video rental place the month this movie was released over 20 years ago. I had been planning on renting it for myself because I didn't get to see it in theaters, but it was always sold out when I came in. One customer was returning a copy when I was working and I thought I would rent it that night as long as no other customers took that copy. And that bozo customer told me the ending. I actually yelled at him in the store for ruining possibly the best ending of any movie in my lifetime. I will never know what it truly feels like to see this for the first time and I'm still mad about it over 20 years later.

Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost from the beginning. Everytime they meet, the room was cold. Cole was running into the church when he saw Malcolm on the bench. The "red" symbols were throughout the film (examples: balloon, Cole's red sweater, the red roses and red dress worn by Kira's mother, the church door, the doorknob on the cellar door, the red table linens...). The only conversations between Cole and Malcolm. Cole telling Malcolm how to speak to his wife. When Vincent, Malcolm's patient was alone in his office, a ghost appeared in the room crying and speaking Spanish. Malcolm returns and notices that the room was cold. Cole's mother works two jobs so she missed his school play.

The rooms weren't cold with Malcolm, though. They only get cold when the ghost is upset, like in the final scene when Malcolm is realizing what happened. The rooms couldn't get cold every time Malcolm was around because that'd be a dead giveaway. Shyamalan brings this up in the commentary.

Yup. I think what makes it so great is that the movie was a great movie all on it's own. It didn't need the twist, we thought we were at the end where the characters wrap up their stories now that the conflict has been resolved. This movie was my first exposure to munchausen by proxy, I didn’t realize there were people out there in the world who purposefully make the people around them sick in order to get attention for taking on the caretaker role. Extremely disturbing stuff, especially when it’s a parent making their child(ren) sick.

This movie had one of the most protected twist endings in movie history. NO ONE wanted to reveal it. I saw it the week it came out, and I ended up dragging all my friends to see it. One of the best scripts ever written, and Haley Joel Osment is incredible. (Apparently he was able to pull off those emotions on every take. A real natural talent.)

It was interesting that you walked right up to the line, even noticing (as most viewers don't) that Malcolm is holding his wound as he walks away after breaking the window, but still didn't spoil the ending for yourself.

Do people talk in their sleep? Oh ya. My wife goes all-out, screaming and yelling at the kids like “NO! WHAT DID I TELL YOU! “ and she’s woke me up with it and scared me half to death 😂 but sometimes she just blurts out part of a conversation she’s having in her dream. Funny as hell.

Truly blows my mind... Haley Joel Osments performance at such a young age. He was made for this part. It is so powerful, it could help other youngins know that there are people who will listen and you can trust to say 'anything' to. Ooh, "Dark City" is very good. (But make sure you watch the director's cut. Much like "Blade Runner," the theatrical version opens with beautiful, awe-inspiring scenes of the wondrous fantastical city -- and a narrator explaining everything about the setting, which gets really distracting and annoying.)

I have noticed that about 20% catch the twist beforehand. I think the rest of us don’t because MNS does a great job keeping us distracted with the ghosts, Cole’s story, and the belief that Malcom is looking to redeem himself from his earlier miss with Vincent. It is just like a great magic trick, you are shown one thing to get you leaning one way and then the magician pulls the real trick amplifying the effect. Brilliant writing. Great react… keep’em coming!

Bruce Willis worked with Shamalamamaya again in Unbreakable, which is also a pretty great movie. Haley Joel Osment got his Oscar nod the same year and in the same category as Michael Clarke Duncan for his role in Green Mile... a movie he auditioned for because Bruce Willis was a personal friend and brought it to his attention.
