Gary J. Tunnicliffe started on 3 and I think is the reason the makeup started having rounded heads on the pins/nails. He slowly made the grid less deep into the skin to where it almost looks drawn on now with red and black. The first two films had the best look. An off-white, deep grid with no red, and the nails had flat heads. In his own movie, judgment you can see just how far he has finally strayed. Story wise in Judgement he also has the pins go less than a centimeter into the head when in movie 2 you see it's about 4+ inches.

I feel budget has a lot to do with design changes as well. Gary has talked at length about his passion towards the series, yet the studios never had any to match, which became more apparent over time. We went through 2 good films, 2 okay films, 3 films with scripts that weren't originally intended to be Hellraiser (and of those 3, 2 may as well be the same script), a film that is so bad it's good (if you're into that), a film so bad that you have to wonder why the studio even bothered keeping the IP, and ended with a film I desperately wish had the cash behind it to put it in league with the okay films. The franchise is like a beloved family dog that has been holding on for years with a chronic disease, all thanks to vets who are paid enough to keep 'em going, just not comfortably.
