This is a great video, I hope you don't mind if I sample your steel helmet tests a little bit when I talk about Russian army helmets. I conducted my own tests on these helmets and got similar results as you did!

Awesome insightful test guys! As a Miliitary Helmet afactinado like you as well as having worn and tested several Steel and Kevlar Helmets throughout my Military service careers to both to the USA and Republic of Estonia. The 1st helmet I wore was the US M1 in the US Army it was terrible. As one size fits all the damn thing got constantly loose and gave me constant headaches. Years later in the then fledging Estonian Defense Forces Army I wore this same Soviet helmet you tested here in this video the the SSh- 68 helmet also the Finnish/ Swedish 37-65 helmet and the East German M56 helmet. I also ballistically tested the East German M56 several times and found it overall to live up to its reputation if being an excellent protective helmet. Just as you , I found discovered as you did, that it depends on the batch of steel how the helmets were made as to their ballistic protection performance in resisting compromise. It has been claimed that the East German M56 helmet was alledgedy made of a Steel/ Titanium Mixture. I believe that this claim could indeed be factual with certain batches of the M56 helmet however not everyone or all of the batches of M56 helmets. I felt that the East German M56 helmet was superior to the worn old used US PASGT Kevlar that Estonia was begining to receive in 1995+. As the US manual states after a year of exposure to Sunlight and Rain the, Kevlar helmet loses some to allot of it's ballistic protection. Based upon my research and my personal testing, I did recommend that the GDR/ DDR NVA M56 Helmet be adapted by the then fledging Estonian Defense Forces Army back in 1995. As to it's known superior ballistic protection and available at the time. An American Militaria Historian author was in the process of writing a book about the East German M56 Helmet and reached out to the Estonian Defense Forces Army where I was tasked to respond. I did and he has photos of me wearing the DDR NVA M56 helmet for his book publication. Also a former East German Border Guard years ago told me that thet experimented with a composit material like Kevlar however the upgrade for GDR government was not affordable. I would like to see a photo of the GDR/ DDR NVA composit Kevlar Ballistic Helmet Believe me Mike, you guys tests on various Steel and composit material Military Helmets are very important. Thank you for your dedicated insightful work! Best Wishes Keep up the good needed work. Safe Journeys.

Something strange I have noticed personally is a difference in chinstraps on these helmets. While most have a normal prong buckle, mine has a simple slide buckle (made 1990). One thing that would be really good to know with these tests is when the helmets were made, since a lot of gear made near the end of the Soviet Union was much lower quality than that made long before. Though it has been theorized the one in the first test was defective or fire-damaged, I would guess it was simply a low quality one made in ‘90, ‘91, 92’, or somewhere close to those years.

Hey Mike, I was curious about the batches the helmets came from. Would you happen to know what the "good" batches are, as well as the bad ones, and how to tell? I just bought one on ebay, and I wouldn't want it to be subpar in protection.

Thanks, It's good to know that my helmet has some gold ballistic capabilities. It's probably the most comfortable helmet I own, besides my Yugo M59. That helmet's weird, it has the shell shape and paint color of the original M59, but the updated liner of the M59/85.

What about shooting ranges? They are avaible in Poland for common people. You just pay for your place and weapons & amunition (if you do not have own) and just shot. Maybe owner will agree to shot helmet there? And Wz. 67 is not polish varianf of the SSh-68 helmet but own Polish contruction heavy based on Polish Wz. 31 helmet! For example check J. Kijak, "Hełmy Wojska Polskiego 1917-2000", Warsaw 2013, pages 89-92.
