As a former high school geometry teacher I know the difficulties kids have at the high school level. It’s wonderful she has an involved dad who’s willing to help her. Since he’s probably going to be her favorite resource I say use the free program with the videos and grading, throw in the Fred books every so often for the humor and best of all use dad. She’ll remember and appreciate him so much more in the future than some rando guy online that was overpriced. You’ve got me nervous about Saxon! I just bought the Algebra 1/2 for my son in 7th grade. 😮

That is such wonderful advice. It is nice that we have him as a resource. Thank you for sharing! Girl... Saxon was a struggle. It was just way too much for us. And I did not like the flow at all. I feel like if your student enjoys (or doesn't mind) math, then it is totally fine. But it is not a good fit for kids that don't love math or don't love spending lots of time on one subject. However, I hope it works well for you guys!

Denison for the win!!! I'm using it with all 4 of my kids this year from math hater to gifted to learning disabled. They all LOVE it and they love Mr. Denison. He calms the raging math beast. And if no one has already told you this, the kids are supposed to grade their own work every day using the solution manual OR the solution videos. The only grading you will need to do is the tests and the final exam. Best math decision I've ever made and I've been homeschooling since 1990.

My kids are pretty good at math but they just don’t love it, and Denison worked so well for us! What I like about the Algebra program is they don’t try and trick the kids or make it more difficult than it needs to be. It’s very straightforward and I’m very happy with it!!

My son faught me in every math program ever until Denison!!! Something awesome about it that people don’t talk about as much is they do so much review it’s very easy to transition from other programs. Also there is video and book solutions to all the problems so the kids can check their own work if you want.

Curious if you will share why you're not considering Thinkwell? I'm looking at it for my son next year for 6th. We did Saxon this year for 5th and it went OK but I'm wondering if Thinkwell would be better. Denison looks great but I'd rather wait until 7th for the prealgebra course.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. I initially threw it out because of the price. I like to purchase things that I can use again with my other children. I did go back and watch a sample video. I think it looks like a great program. I'm not 100% my daughter would enjoy it. I think the simplicity of Denison is going to be more appealing to her. I feel like it would be a great option for some, so I wanted to include it because I know people like it. Hope that helps!

Why does curriculum have to cost so much more for upper levels?!?

That price is just too much. Even Denison seems expensive. I know when we get to high school I’m probably going to have to pay more.

I agree. It seems like the high school programs are a huge jump in cost from the lower grades! Khan Academy is a free option that I think is very well done. But I think people will need to account for the added cost in their budget for high school for sure! Thanks for sharing and watching!

Wouldn't you also have to buy new student packets for each kid for MUS?

Does Khan academy teach the math? My kids used it in public school but I feel they said they didnt teach the lessons. It was more of a practice program.

They do have video lessons. So yes they teach. That being said, we don't love the videos. But I can step in when they are confused on something. Is it perfect? No. But it is still a good option.
