EN: 19 years ago it was me, who asked my parents, if I could buy a pet spider. I know what tough talk I had back then. Nowadays I hear a lot of questions from parents during exotic pet expos, so I think there is lacking material in that matter. This video is not a care guide, it's an overview of the responsibilities and dangers. If you have more questions regarding this... don't hesitate to ask me on Facebook ^^
Enjoy :)

Looking great for a centenarian! Despite not being a parent - and even if I was, I would just point to my own collection and say "pick and choose, kiddo" if my kid wanted a tarantula - I think this vid is super neat and a good introduction for parents. Very calm and relaxing. Well done!

Thankfully my father was a country bumpkin who probably grew up running around catching bugs for entertainment. He caught ladybugs and spiders for me when I was little, so I grew up loving inverts. My first pet spider was when I was 5-6, a black spider that my father caught for me. No memory of what happened to it, but it always managed to escape, so that was probably what happened. My other parent also grew up in a rural area so don't really care much about my pets, as long as they don't escape, 'cause they would definitely be mistaken as house pests and killed on site.

That's a great story. I wonder what that black spider was... are you keeping tarantulas now?

@@tarantuhalla Unfortunately I can't remember how that spider looked like besides the fact that it was small and black. Maybe some kind of small wolf spider. I got a vinegaroon last year (as it was my dream pet) and another one this year. I also have a jumping spider (had 2 but my other one passed last month), beetles, and a millipede (impulse buy). Tarantulas are cool but I didn't want one because I always see videos about them dying in various ways (bad molt, impaction, drowning, etc.), but recently, after watching videos from TarantulaKat and Tarantula Collective recommending them, I caved and got my first tarantula last month at an expo. I went for a G. pulchripes because I heard that they're the most docile species (excluding dwarves), that they're rarely defensive or kick hairs. Out of all the "beginner" terrestrial species, the Chaco has my favourite colour, as black&gold is one of my favourite colour combinations. I wanted one that would grow big for display purposes, but also docile enough that I could handle it a few times a year. I also wanted an older specimen so that I would have less molts to deal with, but the biggest ones the vendor was selling were only 3 DLS. My tarantula is most likely going to be my only T until she passes (unless I'm lucky enough to come across a female Chilean Flame Dwarf, I heard those are the absolutely sweetest that would willingly climb onto your hand), due to my fear of molting complications. I think I'm probably always going to be more of a vinegaroon person. I wanted a vinnie in the first place because I heard that they're very hardy and that they aren't venomous. They're rather slow when they're walking around on my hands, and the vinegar smell doesn't bother me much. My female pinched me during feeding, thinking my finger was a cricket, but it didn't hurt much at all. I also did some research and found no results about them dying from bad molts and impaction. They also stop molting once they've matured, so I think they're a lot hardier than Ts and prefer them. I love my tarantula but she sealed herself away the day after I got her and doesn't seem to want to come back out, so I have yet to really get to enjoy her much.

Well as a 52 year old guy i always saw spiders as disgusting, but thus changed recently after watching videos about tarantulas. They are amazing and it's fascinating to see that each hsve its own personality even when they are from the same species. Meanwhile i want my own tarantula and i was torn between the grammostola pulchra, the brazilian black that looks like black velvet. Pulchra by the way stands for pretty / beauty and she is a real beauty. The othe is the brachypelma hamorri, the mexican red knee. Since i torn between both and cant decide what one to get, i will get both. Both are new world and ususlly very calm. I havent seen one kicking hair or giving a thread posture. Many tarantula keeper and pet stores consider them as great starter tarantulas and if you get a juvenile female you can have her for 20 years and more. Yes tell the apear intimidating the way they move but once you gave them a chance you notice how fascinating and beautiful these creatures are. As a guy who totally rethought my opinnion about spiders and even was scared by them, i can just encourage you as a parent. Watch some videos and learn how amazing, beautiful and in nature how usefull those 8 legged creatures are. And if you are scared about the imposing sight of a huge spider, check out jumping spiders. They are absolutely adorable and cute. Maybe they help you accept a tarsntula as well.

Thank you for that info for newcomers. I think it almost always starts with fear of the unknown, and then develops into a fascination. So what spiders are you getting next? Maybe an arboreal?

@tarantuhalla I'm still waiting for the terrariums yo be devilvered so I don't have them jet :( and the Brazilian black is not available at the moment, at least not as juvenile and raising a spiderling could be very challenging for a beginner. All I've talked so far recommended to start with a juvenile cause they are more robust. When I get my 8 legged friend I want to make sure I can give it the best possible care and a good home and life. I hope the terrarium is soon be delivered so I can order the brachypelma hamorri that is available in my region. Before I get more I have to learn a lot and get some experience. There are quite a lot of interesting ones like the cobalt blue or the theraphosa blondi / stirmi, the blue baboon and orange baboon, thd orange bitey thingy. But befor I thinking about to get one of those I want to get some experience with the docile, calm ones. As I said, I want the best for the animal and want it to have a good life. The main reason I shared my story was to show people that even someone who was afraid of spiders and found them disgusting can change his mind and notice how fascinating spiders can be when you give them a chance. Hope I will get my hamorii till the end of the month.

You are correct that sometimes they could mistake your finger for a cricket.lol I have an A. aviculiria morph 6 formally A. Metallica. She's a good girl but one time I tried to move her away from a certain spot on the glass with a small paint brush. She spun around so fast to face it . Either she was semi a sleep and I startled her or she thought dinner was ready. She is a big time eater. I have cut back on feeding her since her butt is to big for a pink toe.

Overfeeding a tarantula is never good, but so far I only noticed that Acanthoscurria are more prone to being overfed... they seem to be hungry all the time. And I also noticed that they are more prone to action when hungry.

the info id find most useful as a new spider keeper. This is a list everyone needs to know and admittedly, even im still learning after a couple years of keeping. How often to feed? once a week? once every few days? (using a simple example like an Arizona Blonde) How to feed. I typically just drop crickets in the enclosure and let them work it out. the cricket will basiically be eaten within a day or two. Ive only had to remove one aggressive cricket that was chasing an old jumping spider of mine. How often to clean the cage or swap the soil out? (im still unsure on this one) Water availability? a bowl? a spritz on the walls every morning or few days? basic stuff like this because they are so different from keeping any other pets. :) also A Calcodes (AZ blonde) is the PERFECT first T for everyone! mine is just the sweetest calmest little lady!

Awesome video Mark! My parents didn't give me a chance to have a Trantular when I was younger. Was always fish or rodents 🙄🤦‍♀️. I wish there was this sort of video around when I was younger. Great video and very informative 👍. Anymore thoughts about coming to an expo in UK? ❤

Thank you very much. I tried my best to make somthing informative for parents... like a "in a nutshell" video. There should be propably more. As for a UK expo, I don't have so many days off from work anymore. But I will plan a visit to the UK for the next year. Who knows, I have some plans, but time will tell how this will go. Skål Marc

I didn't get into keeping tarantulas until I was 19 and still living at home. To butter up my mother to the idea I lbought a tarantula book by a Mr.Browny, and had her read it. It had a B.Smithi in all it's colorful glory on the cover. She read it and thought why not? Easy to keep, don't eat much, clean, quiet, harmless, etc..... I land up buying a B. Emilia Mexican red leg.Sweet temperament, but what a hair kicker!!!! lol
