Great Video! Very helpful. I might also recommend maybe doing a video on how to load your purchased presets. From download, what files to store them. The entire process. I read A lot of people are confused. You are the best for this task as you really explain it thoroughly and your video’s are really the best on KZfaq. So in essence, if using the tonex pedal as your audio input via usb to feed the software (via channel 2), there is no need to tweak the trim, as it will be the same when playing through the software or the standalone pedal

I got my ToneX Pedal yesterday and to be honest, i'm still trying to understand how to get things done correctly. What it means is, that it makes a huge difference how you connect your interface to a specific device. What i have learned so far is, that you can connect it via USB directly to your MAC or PC or via 1/4 inch cable into your audio device, you can even let USB and 1/4 inch connected, but then you have to understand which input / output you select in the ToneX software and/or your DAW. Since there are multiple choices it makes it a bit hard (at least for me) to get the results - in terms of good quality sound, whatever preset i select - in an acceptable way. For the time being i'm doing learning by error and take notes what sounded good and what sounded bad. Especially when i play thru the ToneX Pedal into my Apollo x8 the ToneX "Clean Presets" sound way too quite and on the other hand all the "Driven Presets" sound way too loud. I adjusted the TRIM IN, i tried different settings with the VOLUME on the unit, i tried settings with the MAIN VOL.....but the result is - for the moment - not really satisfying or in other terms it's not really "plug and play" - therefore i really can understand that a lot of people are a bit frustrated with the unit at the beginning cause they can't achieve the sounds they would like to hear. Especially when recording into my DAW i'd like that things work easy and fast, without thinking, just grab the guitar, start the daw, select a sound and get my ideas recorded in a quality that is the same all the time. Am i frustrated now? No, not at all, cause i suppose there is a certain learning curve, but i'd wish there was a video out there showing the different ways of using the ToneX Pedal together with the ToneX Software AND - most important - how and in which way the unit is connected to an Audio Interface or PC/MAC and which settings have to be taken into consideration on the Pedal and within the software. @Jason: Many thanks for your work, it helped me a lot, but as you see - im still struggling (and maybe others too). Keep on going you are doing a great job! Cheers!

Additional Remark: Maybe most or maybe some of you know this, for me it was pretty new and i just discovered it while trying to get a clean sound that sounds like it should sound - and not like an amp that has only 0.2 watts or stands in the next room. It is absolut crucial to adjust the compressor and noise gate settings (presence and depth too) on the ToneX pedal. If you don't adjust then on the pedal, the sound of clean amps will stay at a very low volume and will sound unsatisfying.

I haven't bought the pedal yet but there is something which I think will be an issue and I've not seen it discussed. Because the Tonex doesn't have a send and return socket, if you want to use perhaps a chorus and delay guitar pedal you will probably mean you have to turn the output of the Tonex down so it won't overload the external pedals. That means the lower output from the guitar pedals won't drive a power amp (or some fx returns) properly; you will get reduced volume. I have had this happen with a Hughes & Kettner Tubeman, I had to turn it down so I could use pedals but then it wouldn't drive my power amp properly. The only answer would be an additional preamp at the end of the chain to lift the level back up, but I haven't found anything suitable yet. I have seen it said that the lack of a send and return isn't an issue but I think if you consider the above it really is a problem.
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites Жыл бұрын
First off, I noticed you grabbed some tone model packs, thanks so much and I hope you enjoy :-) While what you mention could most certainly be an issue depending on what pedal you are putting after the Tonex Pedal, it would be very similar to inserting them into the fx loop of any normal tube amp. When we insert a pedal into the fx loop the signal hitting the pedal(s) is a Line level signal since it is after the preamp section. So, it will be the same situation as putting the pedal after the Tonex pedal which would also be feeding the pedal a Line level signal in the same manner as the fx loop of an amp. I feel that any pedal that would work in the fx loop of an amplifier should work out alright :-) Hope that helps! Thanks again!

It would be great to have some kind of instruction on how to hook this up to the Helix. No, that's not a dumb question. Try it and you'll see that it loses a lot of oomph when you do. I have the UA Dream 65 hooked up to the Helix and pipe the helix fx pedals thru it and it sounds fantastic. Now I want to do the same thing with the Tonex without sacrificing its tone. Should I have for example, used an FX Loop regardless of the fact that it isn't stereo in? I chose send on 3 and return on 3/4 Should I make any trim settings? Do I have to apply eq to get that girth back? I A/B'd it with sending signal directly to the board and the difference is very noticeable. Also would like to know where to put the fx loop in the signal chain. Since you have both units I figured you would know. : )

I'm struggling a 'bit' with using the pedal with Logic Pro (I suspect my question applies to any DAW). Is there a way to connect the pedal to my computer via USB (the "in") and then have the output from Logic go to another interface (the one with my monitors connected, and with mic pres)? I get sound ... but it has lots of high pitched noise, the occasional period of silence, and this random beep. Once I have that ... definitely going to deep dive into your excellent instructions! Stuck in first gear though. :(
@Rialas
@Rialas Жыл бұрын
To use both as an interface you set up an aggregate device on your mac’s Audio midi setup. Then logic will see it as one device. You have to make sure sample rates match in both interfaces. It’s an unreliable headache, I’ve never had great results, hiss etc. If you have a reliable interface, just plug tonex outputs into your interface inputs.

@@Rialas This is really helpful. I did what you suggested and it definitely improved. nice video. My issue is that I dial the trim input to my guitar to some presets and then other presets still sound different between software and pedal . This means that it would be needed a trim setting per preset if you really want to have the pedal sounding like the software once you find a preset or tone model in the software that you like. I actually asked in the ikmultimedia forum yesterday about this but I got no replies yet.
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites Жыл бұрын
There is a trim control on a per preset basis, it is the Gain control on the amp in each preset. The idea is that you would set the Global Input Trim so that the tones you are getting from Tonex pedal match the software. From there, on a per preset basis you can adjust the Gain knob to get the sound you would like out of that particular preset. Hope that helps :-)
@RichiAtlanticWind

@@JasonSadites thanks for the reply. Yes, I know the purpose of the Global Input Trim. I watched your previous video about it. What I mean is once I adjusted the global input trim, some presets do sound the same in the software and the pedal but others don't. For instance, I trim at -13dB and get the UK800 sounding the same in both devices. But at -13dB the UK30 sounds way, way different in both devices. Hope I made it clearer now.

@@JasonSadites of course. I am using a Focusrite 6i6. I connect 2 TS cables to input 1 and 2 on the front of the interface, then use a A/B pedal to be able to switch from one to the other and in one of the inputs goes the guitar direct for the software plugin and to the other one the ToneX pedal. Both inputs are on instrument setting (not line) and gain of both inputs is at 0dB. The pickups in my guitar are Fishman Fluence Modern, so high output active pickups.
