Hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata), the most deadly plant in the UK. A very common member of the Umbellifer family. A must know for foragers.

The sap is also phototoxic, reacting with the sunlight like the Giant hogweed. I was a gardener in the National Trust a few years ago and was cutting this back from paths. It was a hot day and a few hours later I had rashes develop on my arms which later turned into blistering. Took months for the scarring to disappear. It was 100% Water dropwort sap which got on my arms, so cover up if you are cutting this back.

A kid died from just touching this plant, Was a bit daft making a video warning people about this plant and doing the exact thing that you shouldn't do :/

Thanks Tomahawk, it does look similar to Giant hogweed, even the hollow stem and flowers. I was cutting a few of those flowers/seeds to prevent them from spreading, and a day later I felt the sunlight was burning my face, likely due to sap splash (nothing touched my face). I used suncream, but still felt the burn.

Just been on a canoe trip with my son on the River Waveney Suffolk & saw some of this. I had an idea it was hemlock but used Google lens & was none the wiser after to be honest!

I used one of those apps and cut what turned out to be Himalayan balsam which is beautiful only they took over my friends garden and its most likely down to me doing that because after looking to it they too mostly grow near rivers and streams which is where I found it only the garden which was overtaken is nowhere near!

How does water hemlock compare to cow parsley in looks, the stem leaves etc, also when in flower etc? What are the differences?
@Archiveofobscurity
@Archiveofobscurity 3 жыл бұрын
I think cow parsley has hairs which differentiate it. Also less smooth stem. But if you are not 100% sure LEAVE IT BE! Hemlock is very dangerous. I dont forage anything that looks like it AT ALL.

Is the cross-section of the main stem similar to the ' blotchy red ' Hemlock?
@mikeharrington5593
@mikeharrington5593 3 жыл бұрын
A blotchy stem is poisonous hemlock. Cow parsley has much more pronounced ridges down the stem. - if in ANY doubt keep out because only small amounts of hemlock can kill, say just one leaf!

Anytime I've seen a video on hemlock.water droplet I usually flick past it thinking I know what hemlock is silly me never realised hemlock and hemlock water droplet where different glad I learned because there's lots of similar.looking ones round here like tonnes of sweet scicely that my son loves but isn't allowed to pick or touch.

maybe describe the difference between Hog weed and Giant Hog weed. They look identical at the beginning of the season but Giant Hog weed is every bit as deadly as Hemlock

I'm not at all a beginner and have been foraging for over 50 years. I knew it was deadly but I though I'd taste it and spit it out. I tried a tiny bit and it was very bitter. Spat it out immediately and flushed my mouth out with water many times BUT I still got I'll with stomach cramps within about 2 hours. Not the wisest thing I've done. I must have invested a tiny tiny tiny amount of sap. Don't mess with this plant or it's relative hemlock.
