This video explains the indications for hemodynamic monitoring and its role in fluid and medication administration. It correlates the importance of fluid volume excess and fluid volume deficits and how the relate to the management of critically ill patients who are receiving vasoactive medications (positive inotropes, vasodilators and vasopressors). The different parts of the Swan Ganz and triple lumen central line catheters and how they relate to the patients' heart are delineated.
You may also find the video about arterial blood pressure monitoring (arterial line) helpful:

Thank you! I found this very helpful. I have one question, what is or is there a normal range for PAWP? I just began studying about ARDS and one of the sx is a PAWP of less than 18 mmHg. I am getting ready to watch your video on ARDS now!

Hi Sophie, great question. I realized that I did not include normal values for CVP and PAWP in the video, so here they are: Normal CVP: 1-6 mmHg Normal PAWP: 8-12 mmHg Hope this helps and good luck in your critical care courses!

Hello Ma'am! Thank you for your helpful teachings🤍 May I know your sources for this lecture and also for the arterial pressure monitoring? Also, another question, if patient is having COPD, is the normal PAWP applicable to them or they are only given an acceptable range? Thanks in advance for your reply🤍🙏

Hi Eka Eka, thank you for your feedback and question. Patients with underlying pulmonary conditions may have different acceptable levels of PAWP but this has to be determined on an individual basis depending on the extent of their disease. Hope this helps!

Love your videos! I have a quick question - when doing these hemodynamic monitoring with CVP & PA pressure are they always being done at the same time? Like providers are looking at both the pressures? I was just confused by the picture at the bottom where the CVP is stopped in the atrium and the needle still goes to pulm artery for the PAWP ( I hope this makes sense) thank you!!!!

Hi and thanks for watching! These 2 measurements can be taken together or separately. Some patients may not require both CVP and PAWP. Sometimes a patient only requires CVP measures but usually the ones who need PAWP are more critical and will also have CVP measured. Both can be accomplished with the same line. Hope this helps!
