Hyoscyamus niger, commonly known as henbane, black henbane or stinking nightshade, is a plant that is poisonous in large quantities, in the family Solanaceae. It is native to temperate Europe and Siberia, and naturalised in the British Isles. Henbane was historically used in combination with other plants, such as mandrake, deadly nightshade, and datura, as an anaesthetic potion, as well as for its psychoactive properties in "magic brews". These psychoactive properties include visual hallucinations and a sensation of flight. It was originally used in continental Europe, Asia, and the Arab world, though it did spread to England in the Middle Ages. The use of henbane by the ancient Greeks was documented by Pliny who said it was "of the nature of wine and therefore offensive to the understanding", and by Dioscorides who recommended it as a sedative and analgesic. The plant was also purportedly used as a fumigant for magical purposes. Albertus Magnus, in his work De Vegetalibus, reported that necromancers used henbane to invoke the souls of the dead as well as demons. Henbane was already being demonized as early as the Late Middle Ages when it became inseparably associated with witchcraft and malefic practices. “The witches drank the decoction of henbane and had those dreams for which they were tortured and executed. It was also used for witches’ ointments and was used for making weather and conjuring spirits. If there were a great drought then a stalk of henbane would be dipped into a spring, then the sun-baked sand would be sprinkled with this” Henbane seeds have been found in a Viking grave near Fyrkat, Denmark, that was first described in 1977.This and other archaeological finds show that H. niger was known to the Vikings. Analysis of the symptoms caused by intoxication of this plant suggest that it may have been used by berserkers to induce the rage state that they used in war.

In Ancient Greece we called this plant "δαιμοναριά" , it was used with other plants in order to induce an altered state of consciousness which allowed for divine communion. The name daemonaria is etymologised as the daemon-tongue. Apparently the potion induced a different 'highs', according to the spells that the magus had conjured over it.

It seems like burning the seeds as incense is the safest way to consume it. Since ingesting it can cause stomach issues and worse if you consume a lot. I am considering burning a small amount in a ceremony, possibly mixing it with mugwort and sage.

I've recently started working with Henbane, and while I wait for the plants to grow, I've experimented with smoking the seeds mixed with weed or tobacco. I'll smoke three at a time and then wait a few hours to measure my reaction before trying more. I've gotten up to 9 in one night before I started feeling like I was on the threshold of a powerful experience. Burning them as incense seems like a waste to me, unless you're burning a lot of them and keep your face close to the smoke

For instance my tribe is the Frekobards, they have traits from Norwegian vikings, Langobard, Salian/Batavian Franks, Saxon/Angle Anglo-Saxon, and Briton/Gael Celts. Henbane was used by the Witches of Old. In combination with other plants and pressed into a tea and administered to women could delay pregnancy for several years. The Witches of Old had much knowledge of plants, roots and herbs. That is why the Witches of Old were referred to as wise women. Witches of Old never made charms or cast spells they used their brooms to sweep the floor. (DeMeo has also compiled interesting historical and ethnological material on this subject).

It's cousin Atropa Belladonna, was used in cigarettes prescribed for asthma until relatively recently. Generally, smoked, they're quite safe. Henbane being the most so, obviously that's relatively speaking. They fell out of favour more for the combustion inhalation issue and more modern compounds than alkaloidal issues. I've used Henbane, Belladonna and Datura via smoking when I've had coughs. It's roughly 1.5mg of actives when things get wonky and there after. It takes a fair bit of smoke to get to that. Therapeutically it works at 0.2-0.5mg.

I just have gotten into the new show called Mayfair witches and it's awesome it is definitely up my alley is far as I love anything having to do with you know old piano stories of witches and Witchcraft and unit magic an herbs and healers and medicinal plants and shamans you know all over the world different Healers of all sorts but what made me look up henbane is in the beginning of episode 3 called The Dark Side of woman had been mauled by a wild boar and she apparently was a witch and a young healer woman was also a midwife and in a was someone in the community that people would go to when they were sick and the older woman was about to die and she asked her to give her a henbane that's all she wanted was to fly one more time you know before she died to let her go out flying basically and that she was not going to Heaven Nor Hell but back to the Earth where her mother was and her mother before her and you know there was nothing to be scared of you knowing that and later on one of the older ladies in town I'm sure that was also associated with this group of women came and got this young woman and you know I showed her ritual where they all danced and you know tripped on henbane and and hallucinated and and so it was interesting to hear where the thoughts of the hallucinations of of flying come from the plant henbane.

Suprised by your mentioning of "Pilsenkraut" I tried to research your statement that it is still being used for brewing beer by some german breweries. I really would like to know where and what these breweries are. The uncontrolled usage of henbane (Bilsenkraut in german) and other toxic ingrediences for brewing beer (which was a common job for housewifes in medieval Germany) lead to very severe punishments if the brew was harmful or even deadly. Finally the very strict "Reinheitsgebot" was created in 16th century Germany, making sure that only water, hop, yeast and malt were allowed for brewing beer. So please give me some input on the breweries you mentioned :-)

Do you read German? Below is an article and the wikipedia page mentions it. Also if you look below in the comments theres a dutch guy whos grandmother had a recipe and I know a couple other Germans who are the same. You are not going to find this in any registered brewery. Only remote villages with family recipes. botanikus.de/informatives/giftpflanzen/alle-giftpflanzen/bilsenkraut/ de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzes_Bilsenkraut

@@norsemagicandbeliefs8134 ok - so we're talking about home brewing which is not controlled unless you try to sell your "witchbrew" (Bilsenkraut was also suspected to be a major ingredient of so-called "witch ointment" that enabled them to fly ;-) ) It is reported that celtic druids also used henbane seeds to season their drinks in order of worshipping their god Belenus, so adding henbane to beer has a very long tradition. And yes - being German I actually do read german :-D Though I don't know if I have more germanic or celtic roots but you planted the idea in my mind to do some research on that - thanks for that

Both mushroom and henbane theories ignore or disregard what the sagas tell of berserber rage, that it came out of nothingness, for example the Hervarasaga says that Angantyr and his brothers, who were all berserker, stopped the ship when they felt the berserk rage coming to them and they would wrestle with trees and rocks until it was gone, so it was a state that scaped to their control and was not the result of a pre-calculated mechanical process such as ingesting a psichoactive substance to provoke it

They might have believed that it was ‘higher states’, because they felt ‘high’ , but looking at people who get ‘high’ we know they are full of sh*t. Not much ‘love and light’ in those stories.
