It's the dream of kids all around the world to see giant beasts walk the Earth again. Could -- and should -- that dream be realized? Hendrik Poinar gives an informative talk on the next -- really -- big thing: The quest to engineer a creature that looks very much like our furry friend, the woolly mammoth. The first step, to sequence the woolly genome, is nearly complete. And it's huge. (Filmed at TEDxDeExtinction.)
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). They talk about the DNA but not the histones & methyl groups which bind to the DNA and act as switches. This is acknowledged when comparing ourselves to our nearest relatives which share 100% of genes with us....apart from some endogenous viruses which are switched on in the human line. It seems we are still ashamed of having a recent common ancestry with the Bonobos c.6mya.

While that'll look the thing to do in most optics the biggest one is often forgotten: having a stable ecosystem. While most endangered species could be saved most of them don't fill an important part in the ecosystem. The mammoth was part of an ecosystem that, to some extend, depended on mega fauna and that ecosystem is still there but without the vegetative mega-fauna.

When has the the ethical conundrum of 'should we' ever stopped humans from doing something in the first place? It's simply a matter of time, and that is a guarantee. We've already tackled the fundamentals of cloning; Next up: De-Extinction. I'm on the fence on this one. I can justify an argument in either direction we could go from here. I'd say that any extinction events that humans were directly or partially responsible for should be considered.

There are a number of ways it could be beneficial. For one thing, We could observe a living mammoth for the first time directly, and we could prove that its possible to bring an animal back from a state of extinction. Cloning has other applications as well if perfected, such as growing new organs (although we may be able to just print new organs in the future, so that isn't as exciting of a possibility as it used to be).

To those saying that the mammoth habitat is gone, go to Siberia and see for yourself. The Siberian tundra is still there. It hasn't turned into a fucking jungle. It is still tundra, and mammoths could still live there. 10,000 years ago: Siberia is tundra. 2014: It's still fucking tundra.
@DunedinDino99
@DunedinDino99 10 жыл бұрын
Also, there is a reason why mammoths are extinct. We wiped them out by hunting them. So if we wiped them out and the Siberian tundra is still there (which it is), we should bring them back. And Collin, there is no god.

+A Regular Nutcase Maybe I have a wishful thinking, but maybe it wasn't early humans that killed off mammoths. I mean really so many many many animals like that, wholly rhinos, giant elk etc. all died out at the same time. Humans in that day and age weren't THAT numerous, they didn't eat THAT much meat. But more importantly.... while I can easily agree that humans may have killed all the megafauna in Europe, in all of humanity's 250 000 years history, north-eastern Siberia and north eastern North America have been highly depopulated. So very few people were living there, it takes that few people to bring so many animals to extinction? Also, how come some of them did survive, like the Siberian yak or the Musk Ox? Seems to me to be an issue of food. Maybe the amount of food ran out, tundra now and tundra during the Ice Age were surely different, and that differnce might just be in what type of species of plants lived.
@lancetschirhart7676
@lancetschirhart7676 8 жыл бұрын
+RoScFan It is rarely going to be one single thing that eliminates any total population. They were hunted by humans only after humans invented the tools to do so, and that certainly didn't help. Throw other selection pressures into the mix as well and you probably have the whole story.

It is amazing. I pause though to think deeper than my initial reaction. We(mankind) I don't believe were a factor in the mammoth' s extinction. This seems to factor in with me. And, have we even figured out how to harmoniously live with the elephants, as well as other species on the endangered list. Plus all the new diseases, bacteria,, etc versus the mammoth' s immune system. just my opinion....
@iluan_
@iluan_ 11 жыл бұрын
Consider the following. There are some species (not just animals) whose gene pool is already too small, and thus are doomed to extinction in the following decades regardless of how much effort we put on preserving them (effort that we could invest preserving species that are more likely to survive). To restore habitats we might eventually have to bring those species back, and if we are able to retrieve a species that disappeared so long ago, we surely can bring recently extincted species back.

True, but just as the guy said at the end this is something that should be given a lot of thought. Also, you should watch the film Gattaca, my english class is doing a study on it. It details what happens when a "new" experiment, meant to aide us a lot backfires on society. Extremely relevant considering the "sci-fi" then is actually real science being done right now.

Ecosystems are broken technically by removing key species relied upon for the dispersal of seeds, manipulation of environment for colonisation of other species, redistribution of stored nutrients etc… The reintroduction of a lost key species thus, can be catalytic for the fecundity of a region’s productivity. The recovery and reintroduction of the woolly mammoth is potentially beneficial and important for the northern Siberian tundra.

Well the idea is that much of the genome between the mammoth and modern day elephant is exactly the same. So theoretically if all the differences in the genome were recognized and altered properly, an exact replica of the woolly mammoth will be produced. I agree with you in that I think it's possible for some of those issues, you mentioned, to arise if scientists are not able to recognize every difference in the mammoth genome. This is probably likely since they only have fragments to work with

Of course, please note that those who want to resurrect mammoths are not necessirly those who drive elephants to extinction. The same goes with the planet. However, I get your point that as an animal, group, race or community (whatever you like to call it) we are not doing well. Actually, overall we are often failing and that's because not all humans have the same priorities, values, discipline and most important, we are not all well-educated. You look at KZfaq comments and you see many ignorant people sitting behind computers!

Simple understanding. You took my reply to far. Engineering a single wooly mammoth could lead to greater social/ scientific understanding. What did we learn from the Atom bomb? Where has it brought us as a species? It brought us a better understanding of our universe. Albeit there some people who ignore the understanding that comes with our discoveries and seek to use the technology in a immoral way, but there will always be people like that.

Some researchers think that reviving the mammoth population could alter the local ecosystems and increase carbon absorbtion from the soil and flora changes, mitigating some of the effects of greenhouse gasses. Additionally, legal hunting permits of mammoths could further increase wildlife conservation funding. If that is true, then I see no reason why the left and right shouldnt agree to bring them back.

Understanding that the implications of an unusual species being reintroduced to the wild is chaotic, at best. The animal is large. It's impact on the environment would be large. If it is uncontrolled, it could greatly cause a negative change to the environment. It may not, but there is no rational reason to create such an uncertain scenario.
