Great video. Regarding how to tell the head from the foot end - I use a yellow drip line on the head end and black drip line on the foot end. I leave these tied to the rope so when I pull the hammock out of my pack the yellow drip line goes to the left. This makes it easy to make sure the zipper side is oriented correctly.

Hi Craig. As promised just wanted to give you a follow up on the camping trip my wife and I were on this last weekend here in Florida. We used our Hennessy hammocks for the first time. they were awesome. We used the Kammock straps with the carabiners and it worked out great. Great video and a lot of help. Thank u sir. I'm actually going to use a lot of your advice and perhaps not use the snake skins. No matter what I'm setting up a Real tarp above everything. It's more work but we get a lot of dew in Canada. Interested to know how this thing works in some real cold.

So if it’s been raining you’re going to put the rain fly back in the dry bag with your hammock and sleeping bag? Kinda defeats the purpose don’t you think. As opposed to storing and setting up a fly independently as to establish cover. Your method, in the rain, may keep your hammock dry and this is based on ideal circumstances, light precipitation and no wind. To recap, try doing this same thing in pouring rain and a 15 to 20 knot wind and tell me its better than setting up independent cover first. My opinions are based upon spending the last thirty years living on the edge of a temperate rain forest on the west coast of Canada.

Great tips there, for my woodsman x i clip my backpack to a tree with its waterproof cover then grab my tarp at the top of the pack then when that is up connect the hammock in the dry. I m always learning with the hammock i just love that about Hammock camping.

Excellent tip on the porch and multiple uses of it. I do have the drip lines as well. It the wintery months, I have used coats on the ends to help keep eh cold string north wind out like you did the poncho for the rain. I do the same thing as well, the end closet to the top is my feet end of the hammock. As always great video buddy. Have a blessed week. I hope you found the copper head before you put your boot on, sheesh, that is not good.

+Heartland Dual Sport Thanks for the nice words! It sounds like you have some great ideas too, which I love to hear. Regarding the copperhead...believe it or not...I put my foot right on in there with him. He was so cold at that point he could not move, thank goodness. I actually pulled him out with my hand, not knowing what he was. He was so cold he did not even attempt to strike me. I found a good wood pile and put him under it with a bunch of leaves and pine needles.

I know they are great for our environment and would hate to think what our world would be like with out them. But great story. Yes sir, I plan on doing a few videos this spring about the hammock as well. But I can see we think a lot a like on them.

Is there a 3rd party rainfly that would fit and make a larger shelter from rain?

I'll be using the snake skins only because I've already a severe hand deficit and the skins really help me control setting up especially if in pouring rain. Very limited grip with one hand. Something to consider with survival gear. What if an accident greatly reduces using one hand. For me the snake skins stay on.

Hello, great video thanks! I was wondering what tarp you're using? I am planning a 5 month thru hike with a hennessy aym-zip and am concerned about the stock rainfly. Having area to cook/change hang wet gear etc...

+Wilje Great concern. The fly used in this video is the standard fly. I also have the larger one that Hennessy offers for the sam reasons you have concerns. I started using it exclusively this past year, after only using the smaller one for about 4 years or so. The larger fly is worth the weight if you have any sort of precip that lasts for several hours or days. It makes it so much nicer to be able to get out of it for a break, cook relax, etc. I would follow your line of thinking and get the larger one.

Craig...great advice, tips in all three of your videos. My new Hennessy just arrived ....so I am high on enthusiasm -low on experience .......you have already helped shorten my learning curve so thanks for your efforts in producing your videos as I certainly appreciate it. Observed you have progressed from original straps, to rings to pythons....is the bowline less stress on lines attached to binder vs rings do you believe ? and is it a matter of just trying and now a preference? Thanks. Lou

The python straps I use came about simply because they are so easy to use. It is the way I do things now. Yes I think the bowline is an excellent use for hammock setup. You can use a figure 8 as well, but it is more difficult to untie than the bowline. So you are correct it comes down to personal preference. You may have seen my bowline video I put up this week. In it I discuss the use of bowline on a hammock. I hope this helps, let me know if I can answer anything else.

Hey where is part 4? I really need help to lay in my hennessy. Im 6 feet tall and have the same model as you, but when i lay diagonal, my feet are being pushed up against the mosguito netting and so is my head. The hammock says that it fits people up to 7 feet tall, so now im really dissapointed. Great video btw

I know this comment is 2 years old but I didn’t see an answer so • you should be able to fix it by getting the main line that your hammock hangs from as tight and level as possible. When the hammock sags you lose length. Hope this helps. Cheers mate and happy trails

Hi Craig, i'm using the raintarp from hennessy. I never get wet and have more options and place around me. Much more comfortable setup in bad weather. Thanks for sharing nice information, good job. Dirk

You are welcome. The only time I have had issue with the standard tarp from Hennessy is during hard blowing storms, regular rain that comes down is not an issue. Rain that goes sideways, is an issue. :)

I was really split between getting a classic or a zip Hennessy. On their gallery I saw someone create a lean to style using their bike, and I figured a zip would be easier to enter should I have no trees. What do you think?

+Jed Meidam I agree with that assessment. I have used my zelcro hennessy as a bivy on the ground and it is awkward doing so. The zip side entry would be much easier in such a situation.

What kind of carabiner (can you suggest one to purchase) and kind of knot on the hennessy is needed to pass to this way of set up? Can you still do it with the old style webbing? However I like the traditional rig as well

Alot of people do not feel that way, but I do. I had one of the cheaper models break on me in a hammock once, so I do not take any more risks on it.

I use the straps Hennessey includes in the system and I use a pair of NiteIze Figure 9 carabiners. That way the suspension ropes and ridgeline are nice and tight. IMHP he had way too much sag in his suspension between the trees. Might be ok for a hammock with no builtin ridgeline but a hennessey hammock should be tight as possible between the trees.

Nothing was being ruined. I actually went with the new setup simply because it was easier to set up. Takes seconds to set up rather than minutes. I do not think you can go wrong with either set up really.

What sleeping bag do you use? I've tried to get into mine & it soo wears me out. I have heard a central zipper system is better. Is that correct?

+stevie babe I use a cheap Teton from a big box sporting good store. It is a bit roomier than most. When this one wears out, I am going to get a central zip system...I hear good things about them, but do not own one therefore I can speak on them with experience.

So you have a single dry bag for your tarp, hammock, sleeping bag and rigging? What happens when your tarp is wet and you have to move camp? Do you pack a wet tarp in with your sleeping gear and make it wet, when you clearly comment that you want to keep your sleeping gear dry? I think you need to rethink your setup.

I think you need to rethink the obvious. Did you consider that I might, just might, not put the wet tarp in the same bag as my other dry gear? I bet that just blew your mind didn't it? That I could actually not put wet stuff in the bag and instead put it somewhere else? Dang shame that I have critical thinking skills. It always seems to get me out of trouble.

Do you think the hex version of the Hennessy tarp is worth an extra $70 over what you have in this video? Has this one ever left you wet or very uncomfortable from having to baton it down tight? Thank you.

+yerboyfloyd Great question...yes. I now own the hex version, because I did get wet on two trips...keep in mind that I am out in my hammock over 100 nights per year so it is still a good percentage. But I have not been wet since I started using the hex tarp. Plus it gives me a bit more room to do work (food, hygeine) if its raining outside.

+Nature Reliance Thanks for the reply. Here's a floow-up if you have the time... I'm finding better deals on certain elements of Hennessy Hammocks on other websites. To make a long post short - Would the stock rainfly on the Explorer give more coverage paired with an Expedition hammock? And would the Expedition rainfly do likewise with the Scout hammock? I'm thinking about buying a separate hex for the Explorer and kicking the rainflys down to the next smaller version as I outfit the rest of my family. Good idea or not so much? Thank you.

+yerboyfloyd Hmmm I like how you think but, I would go with the issued rainfly for each or just go with the Hex. I want to emphasize again that for several years I used the standard fly on the hennessy with no issues. I had two events in which I got wet, both of those due to heavy blowing rain. Therefore I do not feel comfortable taking the standard with me anymore. You just never know....

pollock56th I would suggest a dd 3x3 or equivalent, not just hammy cover, but cover for everything else. Cooking, relaxing, hanging shit to dry yadda yadda.

What is the monsoon?

A monsoon tarp is able to open a larger sun block down will close will hold in the heat and block the wind under the hammock. Check check on Hennessy hammock website. It’s their largest tarp. I live in Florida and go hunting weeks at a time without contact for weather updates. If hunting with a bow it is still Hurricane season. I have friends who was hunting and was hit by a Hurricane and didn’t know it!
