I mention Gentle Giant because those band members were also multi-instrumentalists & I mention (Larks Tongues era) King Crimson because they likewise played astonishing improv as well as well rehearsed rock tunes which ran the gamut from sublime to thunderous. Henry Cow enjoyed rare company & esteemed musical colleagues.

I started listening to them back in 1976 or 77.I found out about them by accident. I was talking to a Buddy about Fripp. And he was getting pissed, saying I must be saying his name wrong. Farfisa. They couldn't afford a Mellotron. Or a Hammond. Or a Moog. Or anything more than a beat-up Farfisa, an even more beat-up upright piano, and a junk shop's worth of musical odds and ends. Plus a PA, a bus, and a truck. And they still made great music with what they had.

Non sarà che invece sono state scelte effettuate dalla band e basta per ottenere un certo tipo di SOUND??? Infatti quando alcuni di loro FRED FRITH, CHRIS CUTLER e DAGMAR KRAUSE misero su gli ART BEARS il Mellotron lo utilizzarono andatevi ad ascoltare il secondo album WINTER SONGS ed il terzo THE WORLD AS IS IT TODAY dove FRED FRITH oltre al violino viola e Xilofono e le chitarre elettriche e acustiche suona anche le tastiere e oltre all'organo credo Hammond pianoforte piano elettrico , harmonium vi è anche il Mellotron .

ROCK music is based on REPETITION (aka Sex, which is what the term "rock and roll" meant!) (rock and rolling in bed)... and is the OPPOSITE of classical or jazz in that regard. And just like you can't "get" a Symphony on the first (or 20th) listen (because there's TOO MUCH going on, vs Simply Pop Songs).... Henry Cow is like that. If you were to listen to this video 15 times, you'd fall in love with it. (The main problem is that most of us, listening to it once, think it's just discordant and aimless. But that's not accurate.)

the problem with the Sex Pistols, however, is that a) they admitted they were LYING --- they LOVED Pink Floyd etc! b) Listen to PiL!! c) the Sex Pistols were NOT Punk. HENRY COW IS PUNK. (Art-punk. REBELLIOUS IN MANY WAYS.) The SPs were NOT rebellious. THEY WERE DOING STRAIGHT, CLICHE POP SONGS, but with a snarl. That's it. Super-ANTI-rebellion.

Just for clarity's sake, I'm not a huge fan of the Sex Pistols though I do appreciate them. I'm also not a huge fan of progressive rock or avant garde stuff either, but I do listen to some of both. According to my music critic friends, Henry Cow was one of the main roots of the speed metal/polka fusion scene in Godthaab back in the 90s.

Ya need to listen to a symphony over and over to digest it all, unlike pop or rock music, which is simple and immediately understandable.)
