I've been expecting this for a while, tbh. Now the lock down is ended and shows are up and running again, it must be a difficult balance to justify the time and work needed for a new series of this, and not letting down its fans, given the comparatively low rewards (viewers / financial) that TV or live gigs gets. Hopefully we'll still get at least the occasional NMJ specials made. But, whatever happens, thanks so much for the great shows you provided over the last couple of years. 👍

I'm not sure that I'm willing to accept the horrifying implications of conceding that a hoover is sentient and attempting to communicate, or at the very least emitting an endless inward scream that we exploit as a means of gathering domestic dirt.

One of my favorite clips - hate to see Key go out on it. I still contest that since the rule is no more First Language != English, that when Alex concedes that hoovers don't talk, he's conceding that Henry does not have a first language, which implies that it's not something other than English, it's just nothing. It's like saying Boris Johnson's Son's first language isn't English because he doesn't speak yet, he just sort of cries a bit every now and again (I assume)

This is the way to argue this one. We can't say what his first language is because he has not communicated yet. I also think Horne makes a terrible argument about Loki. That dog definitely responds to commands given in English ("TREAT!"). Even if he doesn't speak he definitely communicates and understands English.

I would argue that nothing != English in the same way that 0 != 1 given that 0 is how we quantify nothing or the absence of something. A program with a check condition like this would throw up an error for a null value for example since its not within the acceptable range. It's too much fun watching Key argue his way into or out of these.

It's so rare that Key is so clearly on the right side of these, but this one is that case. Of course Key was talking about the character not the physical household appliance.

@@kcolloran I think you’ve been swindled after one too many of Key’s ‘floating arguments’, Henry Hoover as a character has yet to speak in any official capacity (advertisements, public appearances etc.) and has only been given words by others which does not imbue him with a language.

@@Pashizzle500 I would say that definitionally imbues him with language, but even accepting your argument in that case he'd have no language which would still mean that his first language isn't one other than English. His first language certainly isn't hoover or "vrrrrrrrr".

Maybe the noise Henry makes is English, but his limited vocabulary only allows hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Hum is an English word, right?

Just because Horne has a depiction of Henry speaking English doesn't mean his actual first language is English. Joan of Arc was the original example, and she speaks English in Age of Empires II, but her actual first language was obviously French.
