I think Stephen constantly brings people who are passionate about bettering humanity and the refugee situation to indirectly voice his own personal opinions on these matters without actually having to do it himself... since cbs probably ask him to be neutral about these sensitive topics on the show as it could alienate some of his audience. Just a thought...
