These lectures have been immensely helpful to me in clarifying the relationship between the Soviet Union and its Jewish subjects, which seems to often be misunderstood and exaggerated. Since this period is your specialty, there is no one better to learn under. As always, many thanks. 🙏🏻

Dear Henry, you may have mentioned that all traditional Jewish Schools were closed in 1930, and public teaching Yiddish to children was in fact forbidden. By this time, a completely new set of school textbooks was published, which were much more for Soviet propaganda rather than for schooling, with Lenin/etc quotations/portraits on each second page. These textbooks were published in a few languages, Yiddish was not one of them.

@@thefrantasticmissfine Sir, you certainly remember the year Groucho Marx was born in, 1890. Take the 1000 away and divide the remainder, 890, by 2 and you get 445. Add the 8 from 1890 to it and you get 453. Return the 1000 to it, and you get the year of Constantinople's sack, 1453, Add 500, and you're right back home in the year of Stalin's death.

Very well done. I’ve been a student of the Soviet period, which is enormously complex, for several years. This being a video of 23 minutes, everything is condensed, but presented objectively. I am curious as to whether Dinerstein (spelling is wrong) who you show as dying in 1938, was a victim of the purges or died a natural death.

I have heard that the upside down pyramid represents the womb of the woman, while the right side up pyramid represents the spear or penis of the man, intertwined together is man and woman, not sure where I heard this from, but it does kinda of make sense, from an older symbolism stand point,I've often wondered about the two pyramids being intertwined when displayed sometimes, and why they were, and no matter if you turn the star of David over the man is always on top, it's a very interesting design, and although this symbol is ancient and seems to always have represented judeism , but really just came to the attention of the world in about around 1948 when the flag for the new Israel was established.

Russia today, without the help of Ukraine, is already the largest producer and exporter of grains in the world. So, no. It's not about food. It's really about restoring the previous Soviet Union boundaries, even if under the new guise of "The Commonwealth of Independent States."

Hard to answer your question as you framed it. The anti-religious policies of the War Communism phase, I think, were supported by the leadership as a whole, though.

....There was a freedom going on, in the early nineteenth century, in Europe that seemed to create a nationalism..... Jews were working on the goal of Israel....Other states and peoples worked individual and national dreams.....The west seemed to press into other lands around the world, so less effort was on home goals....Seems like when things consolidated in other lands, a new focus on home goals reemerged, and the freedoms were lost....The antisemitism probably misdirected and set up Jews, to avoid goals of creating a Jewish homeland, as is going on today to keep Jews from the homeland.....Probably Communism, other isms, and other goals, have misdirected and harmed many minorities and their dreams....Yet things seem to be progressing in many ways....

Thank you for some facts from Jewish history. My family is/was also Jewish from Poland rooted in this country from about XIV century but in XVI century the ties with Jewishness has been finally broken, we became Christian and Polish nationalists (if you are interested please find family Korczak history in Poland). Maybe for this reason I am more aware of the fact that, Jews sometimes like to expose good facts for them but forget bad facts or maybe not really forget but try to diminish them as not essential. So my comment to your suggestion that Jews were purged from political and administrative roles in late 1930's is that it is false and there are many facts contrary to it. Especially intelligence services of Soviet Union were highly represented by communist Jews. I will only concentrate on facts related to Poland. Stalin in 1943 was already convinced that Poland wll become puppet state of Soviet Union and started to organize the future governemnt of Poland in Moscow the same year. Somehow most prominent figures of Zwiazek Patriotow Polskich (Union of Polish Patriots) and later PKWN (Polish Comitee for National Idependence) who were at the origins of new socialist government in Poland in 1946 were soaked with Jews and worked under strict orders from Jakub Berman, prominent NKWD figure. After installing this government in Poland we have the period called by Polish historian as "judeo-communism" from 1946 to 1955, where the facts show how intelligence services, press and political party was dominated by Jews (mostly of Polsih origin but also completely strangers from different regions of USSR). So if your suggestion is true that Jews lost confidence in eyes of Stalin by late 30's why he was still interested to put them on the top of Polish government after end of war? Something is not glueing the facts together. I think that more probably interpretation may be that Stalin lost confidence in Jews by early 1950's and later his followers decided to get rid of Jews from intelligence services and promoted 3% quota for Jews in administration and polit-beaureau by end of 1950's, so that it would reflect real sociological stratus of the society. Somehow by late 1950's and early 1960s begun massive foreign flow of literature about gulags and opression under Stalin by all Jews-writers in USA and Western Europe, so why they were silent before 1939? Maybe because they suddenly lost power in the country and wanted to take revenge on new Russian policy?
