Being primarily a wildlife photographer and spending countless hours in blinds, I spend many a boring hour waiting. Sometimes I get bored enough to go through all the menus. I have a couple of "wait my camera can do this" moments per month 😃

Here's a tip for you, always turn your CPL clockwise. Why? That way you don't accidentally unscrew it causing it to fall on the rocks and shatter! If you miss your spot, just keep turning until it comes round again.

I've been shooting Nikon for 12 years, currently shoot with a Z5. I just discovered the same feature that you just discovered. Sigh. . . yep read the manual then read it again. I'm totally self taught as a photographer and am always learning new things thanks to channels like yours. There is always something new to learn. Better late than never.

Shooting Weddings, I used to switch to the monochrome profile to help with composing the light and tweaking contrast between the black of the groom and white of the bride. If the image is set to Raw, all the colour info can be retrieved afterwards, although you've shot in monochrome.

There's one more setting under filters. Tone - allows you to shoot in sepia and other colors and adjust the color effects as well.

Thanks for the video. When I feel the need to shoot B&W on my Leica M10 digital rangefinder, instead using its B&W feature or buying a Leica monochrome camera, I simply load my Leica M6 35mm rangefinder with black & white film.

When you use a red filter, you're darkening the tones of green and blue parts of the picture, because the filter lets in red light, but blocks a lot of the blue and green light. This means that you can turn a blue sky dark, for example, or darken the vegetation in an image. So the red filter increases contrast *in certain situations*. Using a red filter on a scene with very little color, such as your waterfall, should not affect the contrast. At least, that's how a real red filter works. I imagine that's how a red filter works in Nikon cameras. (A yellow filter will also darken blue skies, but not as much as a red filter.)

II found that same setting on my D610, I will be out this week end using it I really like this feature since it has given new light to Blackmand white photography.

I particularly like that shot between the two birches, the waterfall acting as a third trunk ? That goes on the wall that one 👍

Don't know if you're already doing it or not, but if you shoot RAW + JPG, you'll have the color info in the RAW file and a JPG to use as a guide in converting to B&W to get it close to what you saw in the field. I haven't shot specifically for B&W in a very long time, however I may decide to give it a try.

Hello, first time I come across your videos and I must say I love the way you talk about photography, using a rather alternative vocabulary to anyone I've listened to before. It's "class" as I think you might put it. I have rather recently started picking up photography as a more serious hobby than snapping things that looked kinda neat with my cellphone and I'm curious about that last photo you took in the beck there. What benefits are you gaining from using a wide angle lens and getting right down inside spitting distance, compared to using a zoom objective slightly further away? I would be far too nervous to put my new, slightly too expensive camera in such a position myself.

I've been using this feature on my D810 for about 2 years. Plus you can change the settings and save them as another mode. Love this feature!

Thank you so much for this video Henry. I new I had image styles on my camera but thought the were just for when creating JEGs and of no effect when creating RAWs. I did not realise that they changed how the live view shows the imaged. I used the mono setting on a recent outing that is the basis for my video about to go out. I've been adjusting the Vivid settings, but not for Monochrome. I've just been playing in the corridor with it, and wow!!! There is also a Tone setting below too. Loads of fun mate. Superb video again.

I used to love shooting monochrome when doing urban and architectural photography. When digital cameras first came up with this feature, the pictures were flat and required a lot of post processing. I've avoided it ever since. Nice to know it has been updated. I may need to try it in my Z.

Fuji user here and the film simulations are fabulous and I use Acros with a red filter to get the noir look. so good to see you having fun and experimenting with mono.Seems to have opened up previously unseen vistas. Go Henry! Top man, top videos! 👍

Thank you for this. I used to shoot B&W all the time, and I’ve been thinking about doing so again. You’ve inspired me to go back to my roots.

You can also adjust the settings with more increments using the front dial. It should let you set the adjustments in 0.25 increments. You can also save the custom profiles to switch between (e.g. red filter mode, yellow filter mode.) and share with others.

Perhaps it's because I'm old; perhaps it's because over my decades of work with cameras, probably only 30% of that time has been spent shooting 'digitally,' perhaps, perhaps...I was very excited early on to be able to shoot digitally using in-camera monochorme modes as I had done for so long with film. However, I found I was rarely satisfied with the results the monochorme settings on my cameras - Canon and Fuji - gave. So I shoot in RAW, and then convert to B+W in post using a mix of Lightroom and Photoshop with the NIK Silver Efx plug-in. For me, this gives a more pleasing result than the in camera settings have thus far managed to do. And you are 100% correct - photography is a lifelong passion, one which only becomes boring when the camera operator stops 'looking.' Cheers!

I have been using a Fuji film camera now Henry for a few weeks and the reason I purchased a Fuji film XT5 is it it just has so many features like this that do make it amazing to take photos. Fuji have a thing called the film system as well, which is the film simulations inside the camera, and that is something I wish Nikon would do. It is very easy to just change the look of a photo by changing the settings but these film settings are just amazing to use. I'm not selling my Nikon D850 as I still love that camera, but the Fuji film XT5 competes equally with it and is much lighter and smaller, but the picture quality is amazing

I purchased it brand new and straight out of the box I just started using it with fantastic results and kept learning as I went. Cool vid, impressive photos! Feature has been common to many makes/models of cam for some time. Does your Z7 have the multi-exposure feature of prior Nikons? If so, ever use it? Having PDF version of cam manual is a big help - text searchable and can be put on smartphone for super-easy reference.

So many times I've been out in the field watching other photographers staring at their cameras and scratching their heads because they didn't take the time to learn how to use them BEFORE going into the field!

Surprised no one seems to have commented that the profiles only apply to internal JPG files - the RAW file will be unaffected and any changes you can make in profiles can also be done post processing it in LrC or Capture 1

It all comes down to what you say in the start of the video: RTFM! (As an IT-person, that is the profession's largest frustration with "end users") ... That aside, I never use the monochrome mode on camera - I like to see colour images. If one image could look interesting in b&w, I'll do the conversion including applying classic b&w filters, in post....

I'm that guy who always reads manuals. My Canons have the mono profile feature also but I choose not to use it. I'm so nearsighted, that to judge contrast and values for a potential B&W composition, I just remove my glasses and squint. 😆 I do all my filtering in post. Really great image captures once again!

Absolutely wonderful! Delve into one’s backyard is what I did today with 105 f2.8 macro snapping the daffodils which are up about 5 inches here in February 23rd, 20C.

I set U1 up to use the monochrome picture control on my Z6 a while ago. The problem is I always forget that I did it. Unfortunately I’m not very good at using the features that are available. Hopefully some day I’ll get better remembering that stuff.

Great waterfall images. Have to admit, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to manuals, always read them beforehand no matter what it is. One minor thing, I expect you knew, but the Picture Controls on Nikon (I shoot a D7500) only apply the effect on-screen and to jpegs. If you're shooting raw, you only get the standard 'flat' output ready for post processing.

Coming to a Z6 from an old FE film camera, I have been overwhelmed by the features. I have never been good at 'seeing' in B&W so have found monochrome brilliant for being able to see how things will look in real time. Yet to play with filters etc. Thanks for this and all your videos. Love them.

Wow! You’re having too much fun living the dream. B/W is awesome and under used.

The three things I do most in post are increasing sharpness, clarity and saturation. Imagine my amazement recently when I found that in the picture profile I use, I could boost sharpness, clarity and saturation to the levels I like! But as for reading the manual. Have you really ever tried? They’re so dense and difficult . It might be good technical writing but it’s rarely good writing for reading.

Cracking images this week Henry. Was wondering, can you save your monochrome profile with all its tweaks as a custom setting on your Camera as that would save you time from going into your menu settings each time to set it up if you decided to use the monochrome feature

Loved the video Henry, so much so I explored menu on my Canon 90D and found similar settings! including a red filter!.. raced to the local beach to experiment and took some great monocrome photos. Looked brilliant on back of camera. Loaded them in lightroom and "Bugger" full colour RAW files!.. where did I go wrong? Monochrome thumbnail in Lightroom bur full colour when I import file! I'll persist with Landscape photgraphy, will get there one day 😁

I like monochrome photos a lot, I shoot wildlife most of the time in the early morning when light is unusuble and photos look like crap, but with monochrome you can pull out some pretty nice images.

You had good fun with this. I used the mono setting a few months ago, great for abstract water shots. Of course if shooting in raw it will come into LR in colour but at least you’ve composed in mono so result is good.

I often use the B+W mode to compose (RAW + JPEG) then do the basic adjustments such as noise etc. in Luminar or Capture one wirh the colour RAW until I am happy. I then use Nik Silver Efex for playing around with different filter colours, intensity and film grains rather than limit myself with the in camera results. Works far better for me than the built in options.

I have a Sony A7RIVa. I bought a book (David Busch, author) that steps through every menu item, button, and dial, explaining what they do, how they work, and how/when to use them. Really excellent stuff, far better than the instruction manual. If this author has written a book about the camera you own, I would recommend buying it!

Thank you for an inspiring video. These features have been on Olympus for ages and now obviously also on my Om1. I have never used them, but will try it now. I can include using the in camera focus stacking and Built in ND filter. Look forwards to trying . (-- also an example of not knowing all the possibilities of my camera. Unless I am mistaken, these pictures styles only apply to the jpeg image being displayed on your playback screen, these adjustments do not affect the RAW file. Some photographers shoot in RAW + jpeg so they can then recreate the image in post, as they shot it, displayed in jpeg. 👍

Yellow, Orange, Red, Green. Same with mine. What monochrome could really do with is a cyan filter. The cyan would allow your monochrome photographs to look like they were taken with orthochromatic film and give them a nice, vintage feel. Of course, your camera saves the RAW in full colour so you can go back to that and take out the red manually if you want. You can also make your live view display in monochrome but take the images (RAW and jpeg) in colour - this makes seeing the contrast easier.

I always buy David Buschs book if I get a new camera. His books are so much easier to understand.

Curious why you would shoot B&W in camera instead of converting in post. Isn't there more control in post as you can adjust color independently beforehand and add filtration? More importantly, it's destructive in camera where in post you can go back to color. Just a thought. I may be missing something.
