It's popular for typing in Japanese since you can just use one input instead of 2, and you can just look at the characters to recognize them instead of typing it out with English alphabet. Only on phones obviously, though. PCs just use normal JP Keyboard usually.
@KitsyX9 күн бұрын
I would expect a Japanese keyboard to have more multifunctional keys or key inputs… There’s Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, so that’s got to be many potential characters that you might want/need to type… And that’s before we get to the standard western alphabet, which may likely also be desirable to use on occasion… I might have to look it up to see how it all works… It’d be interesting to see if there’s a Japanese typewriter too… That could be really interesting…
@rodrigonishioka40219 күн бұрын
@@KitsyX There is a japanese keyboard with the hiraganas, since there is a limit to the amount of hiragana, and to some extent katakana is equal. But for kanji, you still have to press in my case space to change to kanji, and if it is not the most used kanji you kind of have to look for the right one. Japanese is hard all we can do is find ways to turn around those issues. PS: I am not a native speaker, far from that, still on my ways to learning the language
@Bloodstar60789 күн бұрын
@@KitsyX I do not know how actual Japanese PCs with Japanese keyboards work. It's very similar on a US Windows PC though, except you have more hotkeys for switching between katakana, hiragana, and kanji. This is called Japanese IME. You can install this IME (language and input method). You start typing in English (roman alphabet) and the appropriate kana will appear. At that point you can accept it, or press the space bar (I think, haven't used it in a while) to scroll through katakana and various kanji.

The keyboard makes way more sense for Japanese. Their mora system is typically arranged in groups of five, a-i-u-e-o, ka-ki-ku-ke-ko, sa-shi-su-se-so, ta-chi-tsu-te-to and so on. So you use one button per group and then you have five options, no drag, drag up, down, left, right and now you make it consistent so that the drag direction always corresponds with the same vowel
@littlewishy64326 күн бұрын
Sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's faster to type that way imo. I have both the 10-key keyboard and the Romaji keyboard downloaded, and personally the Romaji keyboard really helps me type in Japanese faster.

JP people being incredibly intuitive with their writing systems as usual. _Pro tip:_ When your writing system has 3,000 characters to learn instead of around 30, that means it's incredibly bad. No, shush, I don't care how much it "saves space" or whether "haha wa hanasu" looks dumb in kana. You're wasting a decade or more of everyone's life, just to teach them to read and write!
