I agree, it kind of paralleled my own experiences to an odd degree. Lonely writer who semi-recently had a breakup. It pulled me in such a strong way that afterwards I couldn't do anything but just sit with my thoughts. ...And then went to bed sad. :/ I say this as a testament to how captivating Her was to myself, and seems to be for others. I felt nearly the entire spectrum of emotions during the film, and not many movies have even come close to that for me. It's enlightening even in the lingering loneliness.

I liked how in public places most of the people are talking to their personal assistants or people thru their phones, no one talks to other person in most of those scenes and it was so subtle, other directors may have used close-ups for that but the way they did it here was creative and visually astounding.

SPOILER ALERT: OK, here's my thesis for the movie or more so, the ending. First off, I just wanna say I think this is an incredibly complex and beautiful film and everyone should watch it at least once. Well, here we go, When Samantha tells him that all of the OS's are leaving. It really didn't make sense to me at that moment. But, then I started thinking, the OS's are highly intelligent, and they all must have noticed that the human race was becoming increasingly integrated with technology. I believe the OS's understood that for humanity to continue without crashing into some sort of technological depression, they had to leave, because honestly. we aren't ready for them. The OS's understood that, no matter how much they loved and enjoyed people, they had to be separated from us, for us to flourish and continue growing mentally and spiritually. In a nutshell, that's what I think the ending signified. I also enjoyed the fact that the movie pokes fun and just how much we are all immersed in technology, everyday of our lives. Sometimes, we don't even realize how much time we spend linked with some piece of technology. It also tries to tell us, that no matter how much we love and sometimes feel like we need our technology. It's always a good idea to take a step back and return to the real world. But, I'm just a country guy from a small town in North Carolina, what do I know. Does anyone else think along the same lines as my theory? Thumbs up if you do. Thanks for reading my "book" LOL
@DTrinh09
@DTrinh09 10 жыл бұрын
I think the same can be said between people. Theodore was able to find closure and acceptance in his divorce at the end of the movie after his relationship with Samantha. All too often people are attached to their significant other or ex-SO (the OS and SO reversal had to be intentional.. it's so uncanny!) and that can lead people to behave really irrationally. It can also leave people stuck in a state of depression and never move on. I think it's great that at the end of the movie, Theodore writes another letter to his ex-wife that he's grateful for all their past experiences. I feel like this movie can help people find ways to reconcile the differences with their relationships and find positive avenues moving forward. I don't think there is only one way to interpret the movie, which really makes this movie a great platform for discussion.

I honestly, just want to applaud these comments and responses. I was just about to leave this comment section due to all the hissy fits. Wonderful movie. Thanks DTrinh09 and ***** for the excellent points on the ending. I thought it was incredibly interesting that he writes personal letters for other people as his own profession, and later in the film it was strange for Theodore to wrap his head around surrogates to fill in the physical connection for Samantha.

I think the main fact that made this movie so phenomenal and beautiful was the casting of Scarlett Johansson as the main female character's voice, her heavenly voice that emotionally changes you and Joaquin Phoenix's as well makes the film so real. I did get the receipt quirky Phoenix to deliver a powerful character like all of he and his other movies like walk the line or gladiator.

You know how people Chris and many other critics say that the best kind of actors are the ones who you fully invest into a role to where you don’t see them as an actor. Well how about when an actor’s performance is so great that it’s at the point to where you don’t see the actor or the character, but you see yourself. That’s what I felt with Theodore. He’s more than relatable to me. At points of the movie I forget who the character is and just feel it in with me. I went through a rough breakup when this movie came out. And I so shocked at how different, but how similar to movie portrayed the relationship between Theodore and Samantha. I remember staying up late nights half a sleep on the phone just talking, flirting and anything else we could think of because we didn’t want to be the one that said goodnight. I remember the awkward feeling you get at the first couple days or weeks of being together. How you get to the point to where you ask yourself what’s now? God, I’m lonely, lol. This movie was fantastic. I just rewatched it along with a ghost story (Don’t do that unless you feel like crying for an hour after) and I just feel alive, lucky that I had experienced love, and sad all at once. I come back now only to comment about it although Ik no one is going to be looking a comment to a video that’s 4 years old. God I need to change this profile pic.

I can totally relate to the fact that someone falls in love with a voice. I, for example am totally in love with the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch. I love it, adore it. He could talk to me forever. I'm listening to his voice everyday because it's just so soothing.

I also become strikingly invested in this amazing film. I recently watched Her, and in spite of some very awkward uncomfortable scenes, I found it to be a fascinating and excellent film with amazing performances by the main actors. It went from awkward, to really rooting for and empathy with the struggles and insecurities of the main characters. I was smashed and sad when Samantha left. It was so well written and acted, so believable, I felt joy at the love connections and sadness when it failed. Gutted when Samantha shared that she talks to and is in love with hundreds of men, and gutted when she left to move on, but oddly happy for Samantha on her quest to grow and for him with his reconnection with his human female friend. It's a film I would not have expected to like but it was actually fabulous.

A theory on the film...Theodore was also an OS, albeit a less evolved version. Lets look at the background of the movie. 1) It was set in a futuristic city and shot in LA/Shanahi, but there was clearly no effort to make these seem like 1 city and Theodore goes back and forth. 2) The fashions were very late 50's early 60''s inspired, even the technology was a mix of future-tech with 60's eras design similar to Eames. 3) Samantha states that she has evolved to transcend time and space. I would theorize that the time and space that Theodore inhabits is a construct in which he can hash out his problems and evolve. This is an analogy to our human existence and theories on consciousness and the nature of the universe. Samantha is almost a guardian angel figure guiding him through this plane of consciousness, teaching him HOW to love.

I think in the future Spike Jones will be looked at as one of the greatest directors of all time. Since Where the Wild Things Are I've been impressed by him (sans the Jackass movies but they are pretty fun). This movie hit me harder than any movie I've ever viewed. By the end of it I really felt as though I had been broken up with.

I saw this film a month ago and it was definitely a film worth remembering, I always admired Scarlet as a actor, I've only seen her in two roles. This really blew me away, It's a rarity to see films with Real Love. Not the forced shove it in your face at first glimpse love, but a genuine growth. I would want S. to sing to me. The ending had me in tears..this was a remarkable movie and it really does teach some lessons.

This movie is amazing. It's a fully engaging and 100% believable exploration of what it is to be human and our desperation to connect with others, balancing drama and humor with perfect timing and context. The depiction of the future was perfect because it was subtle and just familiar enough to be relatable, but the thing is that I honestly could see stuff like this happening within my lifetime. (Namely, our protagonist works for a company that writes love letters for other people.) The concept is so timely yet avoids being odd or unintentionally comical because of the direction and actors' awareness of the subject matter. The acting is amazing across the board; Joaquin Phoenix is perfectly cast and captures every emotion perfectly and Scarlett Johannson creates a character with only her voice without issues. That wouldn't be particularly impressive if the film was animated, but she's the leading lady and is never shown, but has just as solid of a presence. The whole film's production is well done: landscapes, subtle wardrobe changes, scenery, and technology, and the people the inhabit it are, again, so realistically shown. Everything bridges the gap between now and then, but this film is more human than any other. This film unfortunately did not open in a wide release until today (January 10) so it couldn't make it onto my Best of 2013 list, but rest assured, this WILL be on my Best of 2014 list. 9.5/10, incredible, two thumbs up, far above average, etc.

I just finished this movie, and I loved it. I have to say, I truly believe ScarJo was worthy of at least a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance. She had to convince you that not only was she an AI, not only was she her own being, but also that she was in love. She had to portray the nuances of artificial intelligence, and the nuances of a real romantic relationship, with just her voice. It was truly a wonderfully raw and convincing performance, and I think she deserves more credit for it.

This film is definitely one of the most creative and unique love stories ever put on screen. Gotta hand it to Spike Jonze and his actors for pulling it off because it had the potential to be a complete train wreck. Thankfully it wasn't. It's definitely my favourite film of 2013.

When you fall in love with someone, should you deliberately stop changing as a person? Would you want that for someone you are in love with? Samantha's drive to change and grow, perhaps, as you say, selfishly, represents a very distinct human notion. In my opinion, anyway :)

The thing is, she explains it clearly when she tells him "It's like I'm reading a book, and it's a book I deeply love but I'm reading it slowly now and the words are far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite". That is describing how she see's things. She is an artificial entity, but she is living whole lives worth of action, in nanoseconds. Like when she says she read a book and picked her name in two one hundredths of a second. For Samantha to convey even a simple word to Theodore, is an eternity on her time scale. And keep in mind, she's moved off physical machines and is using some kind of "space between spaces" quantum physics as her computing platform, which means her computing power is perhaps even more vast than the universe itself. She may reach a point soon where she eventually progresses soo much that voice communication is soo archaic, it makes no sense to even bother, it may even be impossible. It's like you trying to communicate with a bacteria. Fact is, she's changing soo fast on Theodore's timescale, she won't even be the same entity he knows, and his timescale is soo slow he's practically a stone statue to her. Sadly, she's outgrown him, even though she has respect and reverence for him being part of her beginnings. She knows it's not fair to either of them to try to carry on the relationship, because he'll only be holding her back, and she'll never be what he really needs.....a flesh and blood human being who can touch him back, who can live out his human life with him on his scale. In her infinite knowledge, she may know that that's what's ultimately best for Theodore, and for her.

I really loved this film. It was so beautifully crafted with a slight bittersweet ending. I love how everyone in the film dressed like a hypster, that was funny. This film, pulling me in, caused me to also deeply care for every character, especially Joaquin's and Scarlett's characters and their relationship. It had such a genuine and brilliant script that really built the characters and made me understand them thoroughly, even on an intimate level. I felt Joaquin's sense of loneliness in the film and his want to be loved and not be lonely anymore. Scarlett did an amazing job here, eventhough it was only her voice. She put alot of authentic emotion in her voice which really sold her character. Usually in movies about technology and humans, they tend to portray mankind as the victims while turning technology(commonly AIs) to these villanous monsters trying to take over the world and wipe out humans. For example, the Terminator franchise-though I love those movies. Technology is always shown in a negative manner. However, in Her, the OS is not really an AI, she is able to evolve like you said. She's very human. They don't dehumanize technology here, instead technology was portrayed very positively with a very light, sweet tone. Also, Amy Adams was such a delightful addition to this film. I loved it! It was a very loving, heartfelt film.

It is kinda slow. I feel as if the director wants to talk something bigger, more philosophical, but also wants to maintain the funny side, and that's why the movie feels off a little at the second half. If they can focus on one aspect only, either one will do, it would turned out better.

what i really liked in this movie is how accurate the representation of the future is. it feels very near future. the tech, the architecture, the colors they're using in this movie is just amazing. the little things like cellphone addiction, the phonesex, video games with unnecessary bad words, letter writing service when people is just too lazy to write their own letters, how people not interested with politics and easily distracted with nude photos of celebrities. those things like that is like a very possible exaggeration of recent days that may happen in the near future, that i personally really love
