it isn't so much the cannon as the technique and usage. The Portuguese and Spanish had a different culture then the English in terms of cannon usage. The English accepted the fact that it is a much newer and better way to do naval combat, using longer cannons to improve accuracy and getting much better at naval gunnery. The tool he used to aim the cannons, while not that much of a thing remembered, is quite the difference, among other things. So the English was just built different in terms of naval combat.

The Rifled Cannon did not come around into extensive use until the 1800s. Breech loading cannons (Loaded from the back instead of the front) were not invented until the 1800s as well.

For people who have never experienced an earthquake, I experienced the big 7.something one in California in 2019 and the 4.something foreshock. From my experience, the magnitude 4 one felt like a subway moving underground below you. You’re a little unbalanced, and it’s shaking, but it could be missed in some cases. I’d suspect that was close to what John experienced at a different depth, so the shaking was a bit more prominent.

Chain-shot was originally created to tear through the sails and rigging of an opponent's sailing ship. One good broadside could cripple a ship, if well aimed. A sailing ship in 1600 would probably have a good supply of chain-shot in the magazines.

I think it would be practical for them to carry messages and packages away from the body given they're running so fast and probably sweating. The last thing you want is your message or your package to arrive full of human body sweat. Aside from the ergonomics 😊
