My young and pregnant wife took our 1963 Ford Falcon to Sears for an oil change and new tires (circa 1975). It took them six hours, the girl was unusually patient sitting in the waiting room with two little ones and pregnant too. When I got home from work I checked to make sure everything was done properly. Well, they didn't change the oil, but they still charged us. It was still early afternoon so I had the wife put a stop payment on the check, then we waited. Sears customer service called in a couple of days. I was advised to bring the Falcon in and they would be happy to change the oil and filter. "Nope", I said, "Send a guy out with a jack, oil and filter. Change the oil in the driveway. My wife will then write you a check. Otherwise you can take us to court." The next day a guy came out and changed the oil and filter. I guess they wanted paid for the tires.

@@BigEightiesNewWave The tires they sold my wife wore out in about 20K miles. I went to Discount Tire (America's Tire). I found out that Sears had installed tires that were too narrow, which makes for a smaller contact patch. More weight per square inch than the factory width tires, so they wear out faster. I was young, busy and dumb. I paid a little more, got the correct tires and they lasted three times as long. I've been doing business with Discount Tire every since. Two years ago I bought a set of tires from Discount Tire that only lasted a third of the 40K guarantee, they didn't even pro-rate the tires. In fact, they upgraded the tires instead of putting on the same ones. Love it when a company takes ownership of their mistakes.

They lost in a lawsuit some years ago and had to quit many of their repairs. There are many places that work on cars, and from my experience the best thing it to know your vehicle and what needs done and talk to them about it and if they try to sell you on things you know it does not need go elsewhere. I have a place close to me that has good deals on tires and does it right. They also patched one of my tires in warranty. There are other places for other things. Key thing is knowing where to go to get work done when you don't feel like doing it yourself.

My AMC Gremlin's factory starter finally packed it in sometime in 2010. Yeah, a starter only lasted 40 years. Darn. Anyway, of course nobody could source me a new one, and it took the local old-timey rebuilder three days to rebuild my old one. But, Gremlin was my only car, and I still had to get to work! Luckily, my driveway is on a slight incline, and the place I worked, the parking lot was on a steep incline. Gremlin being a three speed, I could push it to the top of the driveway, get it rolling and pop the clutch to start it in the morning. When I got to work, I'd back in to the spot at the top of the lot, and after work, roll out of my spot pop the clutch and drive home. FOR THREE DAYS. Good times.

Thanks Scotty for letting people know about common rip-offs. Just a week ago, one of my employees went to Firestone for the $10 car check up. She has a 2016 Chevy Trax with about 40K miles on it. They told her that she needed the radiator, transmission and brake flush. Plus spark plugs, cabin filter and air filter. About a $1000 dollars total. Just for the filters to be replaced was $92 dollars. They were using Napa filters that they were up charging 100% over cost. Plus charging her $30 dollars to install the cabin filter. Which is behind the glove box and requires no tools. Takes less time yo change then the air filter. Which there was no extra charge to install the air filter. Total rip-off. I bought both filters for less than $30 dollars and installed them for her. People, listen to Scotty and do a lot of your own vehicle service. They are instructions and videos everywhere that can show you how on just about any vehicle. Plus most just use simple tools that you can buy anywhere. Plus you have the satisfaction of doing the job and can now go buy you a steak dinner.

Michael Cowan it’s not a rip off, they have to pay their techs to perform jobs. Every job has a set labor time decided by a national standard. Ever look at how much a roof costs? 8-10k. Know the parts cost? Maybe 1500-2500. You have to pay for a service, if you know how to do it, then do it yourself. If you don’t, then you gotta pay for that knowledge and time. It’s simple business.

I wouldn’t ever cheap out on tires or brakes, the former is the only thing touching the asphalt, and the latter is the only one that controls the deceleration of the former. I mean specifically in regards to the wheel shaking under heavy braking. Anything that causes a loss of control I can’t say, in good faith, should just be ignored. Most times it’s probably not necessary to change but if the wheel does shake, i think you need to change a part.

I bought a used car with good tires, or so I thought. One blew out at 75 mph, and I was stuck in the middle of nowhere. Since then, I’m extra careful with tires. I check the air every few days, and check the tread. If they’re bald, I get brand new ones.

The thing about squeeky/shakey brakes is this - The parts are so common and cheap that after paying the 2 hours for labor to disassemble the brakes, clean and re-surface the rotors, and brake in the pads again, you might as well throw in an extra 100 dollars for all new parts instead of having them disassemble everything just to rebuild it. The tricky part is there are so many options and the pad materials change so much, you never really know what you're getting. You never know if your mechanic is taking their time to grease everything and apply brake goop where he should. That's why I have a C-clamp, jack, socket set, and torque wrench. Replacing pads and rotors was the first thing I taught myself because it is NOT a 400$ job.

Hey guys, it could be from higher rpm than the normal idle as some torque converters don't disengaging till rpm is low enough and I've seen it before in few cars that I've worked on, and normally automatic cars do have the tendency to keep high rpm when in drive at the traffic light with the brakes on and normally it's better to go in to neutral to stop the pressure from your gear box and your brakes (not that there is a lot of pressure on the brakes)
