Today we are going to talk about the 7M-GTE, the predecessor to the legendary 2JZ and 1JZ. This amazing Toyota motor has an amazing story to tell! This engine is often neglected, but is definitely worth checking out if you're in the market for an engine that can handle some serious power.

There was a reason they swapped the 7M-GTE for the 1JZ-GTE in the Twin Turbo R. I blew up three 7M-GE's in my Cressida before I went to the 1J thanks to the head torque issue (and when I did it, the info about the head bolts wasn't known). Also, the 1JZ and 2JZ were both released at the same time. 1JZ for the JZA70, the 2JZ went into the JZS147 Aristo. The more you know. 😎👍

@@tonykujat1972 Keep it as stock or with proper mods and internal upgrade. It's very rare to see one in Asia these days. It's easier to spot a Huracan than a Mk3 Supra.

Anyone that knows what a 1J and 2J are will know of the 7M-GTE. Great video, I love the part where a 7M-GTE is pouring concrete to lay the groundwork for the 2J😂

Also the 2JZGE was basically the 8MGE, because when I swapped in my 2JZGE I reused all my 7MGE electronics, including the flapper door MAF, minus the igniter and O2 sensors. It even passed the sniffer smog test!

I had a Cressida. I built a 6mg. 7mg block with a 5mg head. The 2 valves per cylinder handled heat on the turbo better and it fucking ripped. I miss that build. Lost it to the cops. Forever in my heart.

There is another hidden gem by Toyota called the 1FZ. It’s a 4.5L petrol Straight 6 that can be found on Toyota Land cruisers! They use the engines for sand dune hill climbs in Dubai! People there are pushing crazy power figures out of them! There is a video out there of a 1FZ swapped GT86

something "neat" about the 7mgte is its ability to produce lots of torque due to being undersquare, meaning its stroke is larger than its bore, where the jz engines are equal. This is what gives the 7mgte its unique sound and high torque output.

The 7M-GE also came in Toyota Crowns. My dad had the MS133 Crown Royal Saloon, dark blue interior with auto swing air con, seperate electric seats and rear fridge.

Don’t forget upgrading the oil pump is also essential. After that you’re good for that 450 hp without forged internals

My mates 7mgte for 20 years has stock oil pump and makes about 800hp at the crank. Sure he has forged pistons and concords. Does mid 9 second seconds too

I change my oil on mine every 15,000kms and just slap a semi synthetic 15w40 in her and I've had zero issues

Miss mine. Had three different mk3 supra's over the years. Last one was in early 2000s. I had the head gasket issue myself but after ARP head bolt equipment, gasket and proper tq it never gave issue again. The last one I had was making over 400hp and still no issue.

After years of owning a Mk3 Supra and heavily modifying it. I had to have the 2jz platform. So with that being said I also had to have the best transmission GR T-56. So now I own 4 lexus Gs300 cars with the holy grail 2jz engine. 5 2jz running engine's and I love each one. Just a wonderful piece of machinery.😃🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁

My black turbo 89' supra targa top r-154 built with maryin crawler 5spd . Its been making pretty big power for several years with the original 7mgte. Had the block resurfaced with the front cover on to match . New headgasket arp studs with turbonetics T4 (20psi) 2 stage clutch, 550 injectors ( really need bigger ones now) , higer pressure fuel pump , Apex cold air and N1 can and 3" from the down pipe back its made lots and lots of hwy hits and from a dig . I bought a 2jzgtte but didn't have the heart to swap it. Oh my soup is my thumbnail lol.

I had a mk3 and 4 . The 7m I bought it stock then built 3x made a lot of hp but as said the bearings .. this was the early 2000, I did the 1j swap later made it a 1.5jz. Sold it (capitalized). Got a poor-mans Supra (sc300) sold that capitalized more ). Finally got the dream ..sold it and watched the new owner crashed it on the Van wick. Wtf moment..

I took my grandpa’s mk3 and fully rebuilt the engine with forged internals (engine had a blown gasket so why not get everything replaced the first time taking it apart) and slapped on a kinugawa turbo.. making 400ish but I definitely feel confident that I can push more into it

Excellent video and your words are so true. Too many people bag the 7mgte for the old saying, oil issues and head gasket and will always go for the 1jz or 2jz. I'm happy with my 7mgte

the non turbo 2jz is a good swap option because of the price being a ton cheaper. but also another great option is the Honda k-series swapped in Rwd mode. the crv and accord k24 engine can be had for like 300-500 bucks.. not too shabby. can usually get 300-400 hp out of a 250k miles accord engine..

Just finished working on a 93 Supra w/blown head gasket. Was not the first gasket. Inspection turned out it was at least the third time. After multiple cylinder resurfacing compression was raised - not good. Cometic gasket .060, ARP studs torque to 90 ft.lb. a new stock turbo (customers car not ours). Runs like a top. 😁

Ive never had good luck with 7M's my first one had a mild head gasket leak, coolant not in oil, just in cylinder, had good oil pressure even like that, put a reco head on arp studs and a regular head gasket. Two weeks later it had rod knock and id not even taken it up to 5000rpm yet. I put it down to the increased compression due to torquing to 90 vs 45. Too much extra load on the bearings, possibly pinging. I had the timing set to factory specs but with less quench area due to the more squished gasket. Then a mate got an mx83 also, replaced head gasket, blew first track day and got rod knock at the same time... Bought warrantied engine. Its bores were bad though it appeared to have a reco head. Idk i feel like a 5m-e would have been a more reliable proposition.

I had a 7mgte and had the total opposite experience. Got it with 89,000kms on her totally stock. Installed 1000cc injectors, fuel pump, big turbo and intake plenum. 3 inch exhaust and ecu. Squeezed her up to 750hp on stock internals. She's at 150,000kms now at 750hp havent had anything for wrong yet. She gets it fed to her weekly. Even done drift, drag racing and track days with her

I went through seven 7Ms in my 3 MKIIIs before finally going 2J. I loved them, but they would blow headgaskets then get rod knock after. I eventually bought a built 7MGTE and it was a BEAST. Zero complaints until I had to sell them all eventually

now you can swap out for a L88 by GM, the amera barra, They are still fairly cheap and there is starting to be aftermarket support for the aluminum block 4.2 liter inline 6.

Basically do all the oiling mods for the 7m and keep up on maintenance. I keep mine at a religious 2500 mile oil change interval.

I have a Supra Turbo targa with a 5-speed and the 7MGTE. It has a slight knock when warm, so it needs a rebuild. I'd rather beef it up than replace it with a JZ series. I'd like to put a stand-alone on it and try for a reliable 400HP. People who go on and on about how great Toyotas are like to ignore the whole improperly torqued head bolts fiasco on these. They also ignore the early 3S oiling issues, and the 2007 class action lawsuit regarding sludge in the 1MZ engines, and the 2020 recall and recent class action lawsuit over bad fuel pumps, etc. Supposedly the Prius unintended acceleration thing was down to floor mats getting bunched up, so maybe I'll give them a pass on that.

I would love to take a Celica Supra and take the stock inline 6 and build a turbo for it and have some fun, I like the Celica Supra since it's kinda just like a big AE86 with 2 more cylinders, and it's cheaper than a AE86 so it's not a bad deal for me atleast, just have to find one for sale since they are getting a little bit hard to find now xD

Toyoa 90 to 94 1uzfe 4.0L v8 with a turbo on it. Makes good power and strong engine. Highly reliable. People don't know much about them.

At the introduction of the 7M, that black jza70 is actually 1jzgte powered. The sound is clear as day.

The quality control in these engines were pretty freaking horrible. Some of the cooling and oil passages would still have casting and burs in them. Some of these would come out of the factory with deck not flat blowing head gaskets in stock form. Someone did a very good video on how to fix it these issues... Lot of man hours are involved.

Never heard of? I've built a dozen of them and have made over 700 horsepower on a stock computer and modded turbo. Upgrade oil system, head studs, MLS head gasket. Then some performance mods and cams. My latest is going to break my previous dyno as a couple guys have broke 900 on 7m

This actually happened to my mk3 Supra. Within owning it for less than a year I had a head gasket gone out on me. It was out for a few months. It was running good for a while when we noticed a new problem; oil was getting into the spark plugs. I eventually ended up selling the Supra which I do regret to this day because I actually loved the car, but that engine was just a handful to fix.

was probably your spark plug cover causing that which is an easy fix, i threw that shit in the trash and put o-rings on the bolts instead😎

@@xav1uz probably. Before I sold the car it had a very rough idle every time I start it. The previous owner obviously didn't stay on top of maintenance so we ended up replacing everything that they didn't fix.

Come on. The 7M was a dog that blew head gaskets. I had an 89 Supra with a 7MGE, never pushed it past 6K and ended up with a 1mm gasket that ended up blowing, too. Knock, knock, knock and upgraded to an 05 GTO.

This car and the FC RX7 are some of the most overlooked and underappreciated sports cars that can be tuned to the max with little work. You just have to get over the fact that if you buy an FC or a third gen Supra it is mandatory that you redo the entire engine from top to bottom. If you accept that fact and do it the right way with a few hop-ups I promise it will be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable thing's you will ever do in your life! I have an fully ported+header+ALL the goodies 88 GTU and my friend who we lost to reasons I can't mention had a 89mk3. He couldn't keep up in the corners but that thing just kept pulling on the straight roads. Drag race I'd loose all day. Anything with a corner and I might lap him! The mk3 is like an intercontinental ballistic missile with the turbine like thrust. The FC RX7 is like a Yamaha banshee engine in a mini cart chassis. Both are awesome for totally different reasons. But after that friendly rivalry the FD and Mk4 people made it into something I don't even like mentioning my car around the new kid's that bought it all and can't figure out how to exit a convention center parking lot without taking half of the front lip off their car. Hopefully someone will never realize how great the FC and 3rd gen Supra's are and stay away from all the diamond's that are any 13b! The 7m is bulletproof if you fix the factory failure points. Just like the oil injection in the RX7. Once you built it better than new and treat them right they are as close to a pure spot's car as you can get. Unless you think you'd actually like to put the top on a Alfa spider in the rain or a tr5. Now a 4.2 E-Type Jag.... That's a topic for another day.!

I knew about the 7M, mainly because I have a 7M-GTE in my Supra mk3, the real toyota supra engine almost no-one knows about is the 1G-GTE which came with double turbos(used in Supra Mk3)

And the 1GGZE Supercharged. 1G was used all the way to 2008 in a hybrid crown.

They didn't technically undertorque the bolts. A last moment change from MLS to a composite gasket caused the kerfuffle. The fastest supra on supra forums for a significant period was a 7M car not a 2j.
