In this episode I provide the history on the Chevrolet S10 pickup and its SUV sibling, the S10 Blazer, beginning in 1982. GM also offered rebadged versions for GMC; the S15 Sonoma pickup and Jimmy SUV. These were the first compact trucks and SUV's that were American Built, and quickly gained competitors from Ford and Jeep. Later Oldsmobile would offer their version of the same SUV, called the Bravada. GMC also offered two high-performance versions, the Syclone pickup in 1991, and Typhoon SUV in 1992-93.
These pickups and SUV's would last two generations until their replacements in 2003, being replaced with the Colorado/Canyon pickups, and the Trailblazer/Envoy SUV's.

My GMC Jimmy anecdote: In 1989 I was working at a small, 6-person graphic design/print prep company. The "company car" was the owner's early-'80s GMC Jimmy (I don't remember the exact year, or the engine). We used it to deliver & pick up work from clients. Only thing was, it was a manual, and I barely knew how to drive a stick at the time ( I was 21). I remember I clashed the gears once. It still ran fine, LOL.

While learning to drive stick I shifted ours into reverse trying to hit fourth gear at probably 40-45 mph... didn't seem to hurt anything. Used to powershift it into second so I could chirp the tires too. 🙄 That was a tough transmission. 😂

I believe the S10 and Ranger were more of a reaction to the tightening of the Chicken Tax. They used to send Japanese built trucks without the bed attached to avoid the 25% import tax and install the beds in California. They closed that loophole in 1980, which encouraged domestic production of small trucks.

My first vehicle was a 1985 Chevy S-10 2wd short box. It had black vinyl interior, a sunroof, sliding rear window, no AC, no power steering, a 4 speed manual transmission, and a 1.9 liter 4 cylinder engine. It was somebody's beach buggy at one time so they added bed rails, running boards, roll bars, a bug deflector, and a Trans-Am bird on the hood. What a machine that little truck was. Seeing those little square body trucks and SUVs in this video brought back a lot of memories.

2 things: 1. I've seen that Explorer at the Henry Ford Museum, since I live in Lansing. 2. I definitely think that it Chevy brought back the S10 name for a small (smaller than the Colorado) pickup, to compete against the Maverick, it would definitely sell well. Same as if Dodge brought back the Dakota name for a small pickup.

I owned a ‘92 S10. That truck had quality control issues from the day I bought it. Both door handles fell off the first week I owned it! The paint peeled off the hood and roof within the first year. But I miss that truck more than any vehicle I have owned. It really was a good little truck. Edit: I feel I should give a little more info. My S10 was a Tahoe edition single cab short bed that was garnet in color. It had the Iron Duke 4 cyl. with a 5 spd standard trans. I mentioned the color because I saw a few back then but it wasn’t a really popular color. I sold my little S10 right after I joined the military and I regretted it ever since.

That was a cool truck. Very reliable with a good ride. Too bad, Chevrolet and Detroit goofed up on small details in those days. Late 1970s and early 1980s American rigs were generally horrid. However, by 1992, quality was improving. It is too bad GM improved quality but lost their customer base. I always buy from the Big 3 myself. Last 20 years, I buy GM now.

I bought a new 1992 S10 Tahoe pickup in 1992. It was an “advertised special - 3 at this price” for $7995. Nicely equipped with 2.8 V6, air, AM/FM stereo cassette, deluxe interior, rally wheels etc. it was white with gray cloth interior. I drove it for 10 years and just over 100k miles. 5 speed manual. Very reliable and still looked like new when I sold it in 2002. I seriously considered a 2003 Bravada but ended up buying a 2003 Passat GLX wagon instead. I drove that car for 18 years.

Thanks for making one for my first vehicle; been waiting for it. I had a 1991 regular cab short bed 4x2 with the 4.3L V6. That engine was a monster. I once towed a 12ft steel-framed utility trailer (made from a '70s Bethany pop-up camper, so solid steel) with a golf cart, a bed full of black dirt, and three adults. Kinda funny to think it had a bigger engine than my current full-size truck, an F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost.

My family had a '92 S10 Blazer from 1997-2004 and I learned to drive in it. Oddly although it was a four-door it had a five speed manual. Great little truck, we were hard on it and it just kept going. Only real issue we ever had with it were the valve stem seals leaking oil, so it would puff a little blue smoke on start up, but never while running. That and the front exterior door handles started to rattle a bit. I think we replaced spark plugs and brakes once but other than that it was pretty much just gas, oil changes and a few sets of tires. My family road tripped that Blazer literally all over the western half of the US, then moved to Hawaii and brought it with us. As a teen I explored every unpaved road I could find thanks to the 4wd. Camped in it tons of times. I saw so many cool places and had so many adventures thanks to that car. ❤️ I was sad to leave it behind when my family moved back to the mainland but a friend told me a couple years later he still saw it running around on a regular basis.

Elsewhere, especially if you have salted roads in the winter they didn't just rust out, they dissolved in record time. LoL beautiful shape tho and the 90's version was very gorgeous as well. When the trailblazer came out it was real nice no wonder it becomes the only model shape afterwards

Preach it brother! I live in Iowa and bought a 1984 4X4 Jimmy in January 1990. The truck still had the North Dakota plates on it and since North Dakota uses hardly any road salt (at least in the 80's) the body was damn near pristine. Fast forward only 6 years and by the summer of 96 it was starting to get major cancer. And yes I DID wash the damn thing and tried my best to keep the IDOT salt brine off of it. I bought a 88 S-10 in about 2002 and it didn't take to many years for the same rust to kill that one too. :(

If you look at what was offered on the ZR2 packages back then, it's fair to say they were way ahead of their time. Nobody else had a dedicated offroad package with skidplates, rear locker, bilstein shocks, bigger tires, and taller and wider suspension. I like the Blazer because it has the shortest wheelbase at 100", 3" shorter than the single cab S10

I would have like to see you touch on the "mini-truck" fad of the late 80s and early 90s in this episode, wherein people customized these small pickups and SUVs by lowering them, adding ground effect lighting and low-profile tires as well as other trim mods. I had a 91 S10 Blazer 4x4. It looked just like the one in the thumbnail, two-tone red and black with the 4.3 V6. The S10 badge was red on the dashboard. I think it was a Tahoe package. That thing was so fun to drive and practically indestructible. I bought it from an old man in Fort Pierce Florida back in 2008, for $1,200. It had 211,000 miles on it and was in pristine condition. Very well maintained. He and his wife would use it to go visit their daughter and family in New York once or twice a year. After his wife passed away, he didn't see the need to have it anymore because he couldn't make the trip there by himself anymore. It made a great work truck and I drove it, sometimes 7 days a week, for another 7 years and put an additional 100,000 miles on it. After that I sold it to a guy for $500 who wanted a truck to cruise around his property in Okeechobee and from what I understand he still has it to this day. Probably should have never got rid of that thing.

I was 8 years old. My dad has since passed and I will never sell it. I've owned several s-series over the years. A 92 sonoma, an 02 gmc highrider (ZR2 equivalent) that unfortunately I wrecked, my last S10 was a 2.2 2001 S10 that was my daily driver until 2017. Man, I had a used 93’ Dodge Dakota Magnum V8 as my first mini-truck, and it was a beast - but my first ‘BIG’ purchase was a 00’ Chevy S10 Xtreme. What an absolute joy that truck was. With a hard shell tonneau cover it was the perfect truck for the time. Took it to mini-truck shows just for fun - and got so many looks telling everyone it was bone stock. That Vortec v6 with some minor mods like a K&N + opening a larger hole for the intake made it sound mean.

Great video. I remember when I moved to the USA on 2007 mu dad bought a used 1993 small cab and bed 4.3L Chevy S10. It had a lot of issues but man is fun to drive. That 4.3 L engine really had a lot power. We used to tow a lot of stuff that usually you need a V8 truck to pull, but that little truck was able to pull. Sadly it over heated a lot since the seals on the engine kept breaking and we had to sell. I miss that little truck.

In my experience with gm products the quality got cheaper after the 94’ model year. Cheaper interiors that didn’t hold up, etc. I’ve owned a 94’ k2500 for the past 17 years and wouldn’t trade it for a new truck ever. I do miss that 94’ Jimmy. Wish I never got rid of it.

I had an '89 Blazer that I bought in 2008 for $750. I changed the tires, put gas in it (often), replaced most of the front suspension, and put a set of junkyard '00 Blazer 2-door seats in it to replace the boards it came with. The damn thing's odometer claimed 280k miles (but was 10+% off, because the speedometer was also wrong), the gas gauge lied (3/8 was "you need gas NOW"), but it got me wherever I wanted to go for quite a few years. I barely even had to change the oil. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat (of America?).

My grandfather replaced a Ranchero with an 1987 long bed Blazer. When I say this was a bare bones truck, I mean it had a bench seat with an AM-only radio and no cigarette lighter (still called as such back then). Worked good for what it was intended to do and my whole extended family borrowed it anytime someone needed to move. It also hauled Christmas Trees, rocks, fencing material, my dog and if I needed to borrow the lawn mower, this is what we used. Though even as a kid, the middle seat was small and uncomfortable. And it kept going. In 2002, I was borrowing it because I was still learning to drive my car (it was a manual transmission) and it still ran fine-though don't ask me how I managed to parallel park it on an uphill. That being said, after filling up the gas tank and looking at the bill, I decided to speed up learning how to drive a manual. My family finally had to haul it out in...2021. Yes, 2021-over 30 years after my grandfather got it. The last I saw it operational was well over 10 years ago, but still beyond its normal operational lifespan. My cousin kept on trying to fix it up, despite knowing nothing about cars (likely why he couldn't). Even the people we ended up giving it to wanted to try to fix it up (and hopefully use it for what it was intended ie: hauling stuff). And the dashboard was not in good shape; the years turned it brittle, changed the blue color into gray and there was a massive crack in it. But the starter motor? Still turned (!)-even if the engine couldn't actually start.

I love your videos - they provide great historical context. It's very interesting to see how these vehicles were thought about and developed at the time. I would be interested in a Chevy Celebrity (and it's sister cars) video as I owned an '89 for a few years. This car (as many of the 80's) featured a unique mix of terrible and surprisingly ok elements. The engine was a shockingly fast V6, while the handling was terrifyingly soft and loose. The interior was roomy and comfortable albeit made with cheap finishes. Thanks for making these videos!

Nice! Brings back memories of my father's two-tone grey and blue 1991 GMC Sonoma SLE 4x4 extended cab with a 4.3 Vortec V6 and the rare 5 speed manual. He bought it used in 1994 and kept it until 2006. We got a lot of use out of it. Reliability was ok, better than most GMs of the era. Due to the rare powertrain combo, I kind of wish we had kept it, even though it was more like a third vehicle by then that didn't get used much.

I bought a '92 S10 Blazer. Although overall it was a good vehicle, there were two problems with it: 1.) The 4.3 at that time didn't have counter-balance shafts, so it was a rough, raspy sounding engine under load (and it put out 165 HP instead of the later counter-balanced 190 HP upgrade). Thus, GM followed the rule of "Push the product out the door first, then we'll make improvements once the bad press gets too loud." 2.) PAINT PROBLEMS. The whole paint job started blistering and falling off. Chevy recalled it and repainted. Of course, it wasn't up to (good) factory spec's; it was alright, but had an orange peel surface about it.
