In this video, I teach you WHAT "Belting" IS, and HOW it's done. Watch Now!
Here's How To Belt - The Correct Way - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
It's so funny!
I see so many KZfaq vocal coaches and beyond that have videos out on "How to belt".
Why it is humorous for me is because when you actually listen to them "belt", they don't know what the heck they're talking about, and yet some of these videos have thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of views.
I'm sorry to make a crude comment here, but some things must be said.
There's an old joke and the joke is this: "Eat sh*t, 1 million flies couldn't be wrong!" (ha ha ha).
There are so many things I want to say on the subject that I'm going to keep this simple for those that are sincerely interested in learning how to belt correctly.
The very, very first thing is understanding true abdominal diaphragmatic support.
You can comb KZfaq and see all these videos on diaphragmatic support.
You'll see people showing their stomach expanding and contracting as though they are actually demonstrating real diaphragmatic breathing.
And yet none of them sound like they have a "tiger in their tank" when they sing.
I want you guys to really listen for this. When you hear Pavarotti, Placido, Caruso, and so on, sing, you will hear that the core of their sound sounds like it's coming from their stomach. Not from their chest, not from their neck, not from their throat, but from the core of their abdomen.
Then and only then can we discuss belting.
If any of you want to look this up, you can look up old quotes by Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale and they both refer to singing completely from their stomach.
Other than KTVA, I have not heard one single vocal coach on KZfaq (or any of their students), with this genuine core strength sound, that is the only sound that could possibly sustain belting without injury.
So even if there are videos in which someone is shouting for a moment, this is not belting, and this is absolutely not sustainable over a three- or four-minute song (much less over 10 to 15 songs back-to-back, day-in and day-out).
In this video, I touch on the core elements of what it takes to truly belt correctly. For those that are interested in taking their studies further, in my singing course, I go into granular detail of this very important subject, which is the very building block and foundation for singing.

Ken don’t know if you personally check and respond to these comments but I hope you know I’ve been doing your course and your lessons are great, what’s helped me most of all is the techniques I’ve learned so far that I can apply to my everyday singing which I think is the best part of your lessons, You helped me get my voice back brother and it’s better than ever. Thank you very much and I’m sticking with your course as I’ve already seen a lot of improvement in just 2 months 🤟🏼❤️

Yeah Ken, I remember takin the vowel mods to the "compression" stage for several tunes, where I was WIMPY ,and though I had to do it "consciously" at first, It later became muscle memory where I had the pwr to BELT when needed. I sometimes still TRY to "force it" but its a work in progress... I always hope everyone NEW will go back & internize the earlier videos of Diaphramatic Support/Vowel Mods/ and Head to Chest voice transitioning. Thanks Ken for the reminders in these "special technique" videos to keep to RE visiting the MAIN techniques to keep us at our BEST!😎

One song that isn't widely famous, but Conway Twittys " Only Make Believe " is a good country belt song. He seems to belt effortlessly. I wonder if he sang in Church, to learn how to belt. Also, Linda Ronstadt " Long Long Time" is enjoying a resurgence. I always thought Belting meant using the air from your stomach more. Ex: Cornell was more of a belter, and Staley was more of a vocal range specialist, like Mariah Carey. Thank you Ken!

Any tips for someone who just goes for it too hard on the belting and uses “too much” a little too often? I have a naturally softer sounding voice, so I tend to push for the assertive sound I want with volume and air. I do feel hoarse after singing sometimes, but I always rest (almost completely) the whole next day or two. At 47 years old, I feel like my vocal chords are stronger than they used to be, and I have much better control and technique, but I love how I sound “louder/stronger” 😇

Hi Lanna, I know what you mean. Although I´m a "natural belter" with a strong and loud chest voice, I too had this problem of getting hoarse when pushing too much. I loved the sound but I felt it was not good for me... Everything changed with Ken´s course. My new technique is to ALWAYS sing with strong diaphragmatic support and open throat like Ken teaches. After two weeks of getting used to this feeling I can sing and belt for 2 hours and more without a problem. One tip for you: Don´t rest completely the next day - don´t sing the songs but do your scale workouts lightly - that helps to recover. Hope I could help.😉

Thanks again for this valuable lesson. I'm keeping these 'how-to' videos like gold. I wonder if you have in mind releasing another video on low-register/baritone singing for guys, like the one you did with that Johnny Cash's song (Ring of Fire) just expanding the whole issue, if there is anything else to say on the matter. I'm really into that style of singing myself. Cheers 👍

Definitely some science to singing in the higher register without blowing your voice out. Do you think the vocal science is the same for singing a high passage or phrase verses just "belting out" one high note? I think in some ways, the art of belting is singing a phrase in the upper register "medium loud" without singing "too loud" to pull it off. I find that when I feel like I am straining my voice in the upper register, that I have not drawn in enough air to get up there AND I am not using enough diaphragm/abdominal support to create sustainable compression. Long story short, if you can sing high, without singing LOUD, you are probably onto doing it more correctly.

EXCELLENT SESSION (as always)! THANKS! Would you say that Springsteen (especially ten years ago and earlier) was using a shout voice in many of the live performances where he could sing at a high level of energy and volume for three or four hours? Judging by his current voice, might one say that he wrecked his voice by not using proper techniques??? THANKS! peace

Hey Ken, would it help for people who are starting to mention that without the knowledge of transitioning from the open Ah vowel to the Call Register they might be hurting their voice by warming up with more range than they can give quality notes? I’m just starting and I’ve been warming up with notes I can easily hit with belting, but have been trying to hit with the same technique as my lowest notes

Hi Hulk Ken, belting is a technic that some one must master in order to be a good singer. Undoubtedly patience is one of the quality that someone needs in order to archive ones singing goal. Me, I'm now working in place that stress me up; and i can not resign yet because I don't have other means, if you see what I mean. But I'm waiting for the right time in order to get things seriously. I know that there's a list of exercise that I already know; it's just the key to reach one's best performance level. But is there any element you could suggest me to facilitate things to evolve in my case, where I'm knowing stress? Be blessed. See you soon.

Ken, I'm not a singer, and I don't actually want to be. I don't have it in me. I'm just a guitar player who has had to learn, reluctantly, to do harmonies. However, I am an analytical sort. When you , and many others sing in a clean "head voice", I hear what I've always thought was falsetto...King Diamond, Barry Gibb, Mickey Mouse...lol...I know about false vocal folds, somewhat. Would you please explain the actual difference between head voice and falsetto? Do I just have a complete misunderstanding of what they are? For example, I can clearly hear Sebastian Bach's vocal shift into head voice on the song Wasted Time, just before the guitar solo; but he immediately "hits the gas", and it doesn't sound like head voice/falsetto anymore. Would you clear this up for me, please? It's driving me nuts not knowing...lol

I will definitely sign up for your forums, and check them out. One last question, if I may...Is it fair to assume that just because someone uses the same techniques Sebastian used, doesn't mean they'll ever actually sound like Sebastian? I mean, we all have our own voice. His speaking voice is pretty high as it is.
