As a new, somewhat reluctant screenwriter, now that I've begun adapting my short stories and novels for the screen (with the help of a great script consultant, btw), I don't know what to do next. I want to be involved in production, but I KNOW the picture will be better with other people participating. The balancing act between not wanting to lose what I've created and the excitement and anticipation of seeing what someone else will do with it is delicate. How the hell to know what's right? What do I do next? Especially since, after thirty years of avoiding screenwriting I've discovered it's my absolute favorite form of writing...ugh. Thanks.

I think you should just be honest with yourself. If other people's input trumps some of your ideas, go with their superior ideas. My cast and crew have a tendency to notice problems and ideas I don't, so I make my film flexible by making their changes/additions as long as I'm convinced their ideas improve the film. Everyone knows something you don't, take advantage of this fact.

Okay, I am responding to an old comment, but for anyone else... A common theme from writers and other creators is to write more and create more because when you do your work gets better. A common theme in the entrepreneurial world is to just start because, in many ways, the greatest business failure is the one never pursued. So, keep your options open, but don't worry about choosing the perfect path forward. Who cares that the greats have had some duds when they have also had masterpieces? Of course, fight for what you believe, but don't let that be a barrier to moving forward in some way -- any way.
