I think people with depression would be amazing actors because many can fool everyone they know

Good point. I think a lot of good actors are depressives. Meaning they are filled with uncertainty, which causes the depression, but with that they are willing to explore emotional states that "happier" people aren't willing or able to do.

I love actors that can tell the story. Sometimes actors can make a meal out of a scene but I forget what the movie was about. If someone concerns themselves with only their character and not the story regardless if the performance is great, the movie won’t be great. I think truly great actors can do both, tell the story and focus on there character

Yes, even in one of his lesser known films("Class Action") Gene Hackman shines brilliantly. The one thing I like about him and you see it also in "the Unforgiven", is this kind of mischievous grin of somone who delights in playing whatever role he does. It wasn't so present early on as in "The French Connection" but moreso later on.

Truthfully, I believe a great actor is made on the side of his light. When he isn't being seen is how he will be made good in front of others. An actor who trains consistently and prominently to ever enhance his craft is going to go far in a world of those who go home to work the next day. As opposed to doing their homework that night. Take care

Such an important statement For me acting is your job title and it is not what you do. When I see an actor acting it kills it for everyone. Acting is the ability to believe in what ever the circumstance is. So many young people have a strange idea because of destructive coaching the old cliche "Being there is so true" How do you get there? A large topic. .

Mmm....well, he's talking about 'great' acting, but mentions 'good' actors. To clarify, I like Hackman as an actor, and think he's good. One lesser notch Notle,wouldn't consider Woods in either category. To me, the most important is what this guy is talking about, being in the moment, truthful, listening,etc. That's what Hackman does. But with the actors he named, they are always themselves. To me, great actors are the ones that can be themselves, as well as play characters completely different from them where you hardly recognize them, as well as actors that can play styles i.e. contemporary drama, comedy, period pieces,etc. Such as Dustin Hoffman, Streep, Day- Lewis

gerard1657 Nick Nolte and James Woods ARE great actors and even chameleonic actors like Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis can screw up and are subject to hamminess.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 5 жыл бұрын
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728, thank you for this... I think it's pertinent to note here, that some great actors (Nolte and Woods, among others) get an unfortunate deal with "type casting", not because they can't do other styles or role-types, but because the other styles, characters, roles, simply aren't selling OR aren't selling for the numbers they need to keep the career path. What happens is that WAY TOO much of the "general public" only seems to know the particular roles that were "iconic" for those actors, and this feeds back to the type-casting cycle. Comments like this, are yet another example of how people too easily confuse the Actor with the Character(s) they've seen... Honestly, I doubt Tony Shaloub (for instance) is really as germophobic or quite as intellectually incredible as Adrian Monk, either... Nor do I think you could blow his head off and watch him just grow a new one... (MIB ref'... lolz) Great Acting (regardless of who does it) is becoming the character in front of the camera, convincingly enough that I recognize the character name before I remember the actor's name... ;o)

He cannot answer the question, What makes a great actor? In a clear , precise way. Too many useless personal anectodes.BEING the carácter , that is the ultimate goal? Yes, in cinema . There you just play yourself.But in repertory theater, where you have to play many diferent carácter? You cannot BE all the characters. Marlon Brando for example was always playing himself. Is this great acting?
@genericasian309

I don't know if you can say that Brando was playing himself. To some extent, actors bring a part of themselves into the character they're playing. They have to relate to the character on some level to make their performance convincing. But, to say an actor is "playing themselves" is imposing a limitation on the actor that you have no knowledge of.

There can't be a precise answer since it's just his personal opinions. At the end of the day it's just a feelings...often times there are no words to describe how or why a certain person makes you feel a certain way. It's such a subjective topic.
