It’s 2023, vinyl is (still) hot, and in response to some of our videos about CD manufacturing, several artists asked us how vinyl manufacturing works. So, a little while ago, we took a drive 20 minutes up the road to our vinyl factory and shot this video.
As you’ll see, vinyl is a time-consuming, multi-step production process that today is virtually identical to when the process was invented some 70+ years ago. This is one reason why vinyl continues to be relatively pricey to produce (especially compared to CDs).
At Disc Makers, we love vinyl, and we continue to do our best to help make records available (and affordable) to you.
That's why we just reduced our vinyl prices! You can now pick up 100 custom vinyl records in full-color Euro jackets for just $999!

Vinyl is one physical medium that I hope never goes away. Records are great for collectors and a really good way to support an artist that you love

i think they are going to be the main physical medium that will exist alongside digital music for a good while longer. they have risen in popularity in recent years outselling cds and such.

I just wish it was a lil more affordable tho, I live in a city that's damn near impossible to get vinyl made because of we just don't make that much here to be able to do that and pay bills, but I understand why tho...

So cool to see the mostly automated process - in the 70s I worked my way through college as a record presser - ran two machines, we put the paper labels on the top and bottom of the press, grabbed the hot extruded vinyl, closed the machine, turned around, pulled the pressed vinyl out of the other machine,, put it on a manual trimmer, loaded the 2nd machine and by that time turned around to remove the record from the first machine.. ..repeated many times in an 8 hr shift! would be 100 degrees sometimes in the summer, there were salt pills and a place in the restrooms to soak our heads.... nice to see a clean and shining and presumably less streesful workplace!

I sure wish more record manufacturers would polish off the edges of the LP's. Some of them are like 60 grit sandpaper or so jagged that you can cut your fingers just trying to clean them. For 35 bucks a pop, I expect better QC. As I side note, I used Disc Makers to press a single for me years ago and they were great.

So the majority of warping issues either comes from you speeding up the process (to get more output) by releasing the press too quickly before the records have had time to cool or the cooling water isn't cooled enough or not flowing correctly. I also see why I get so many split inner sleeves with records just getting dropped in by the 'quality' employees of all people😂

The next time you make a video like this, especially in a noisy environment, do NOT set your audio recording level to automatic, but establish a safe, unchanging level in advance. This will avoid the annoying "pumping" of the background sound which the auto level raises whenever the voice is not present. Your audio will sound much more professional!

i mean, this is just one place that presses them. from what i hear, stuff for making vinyls is hard to come by (machines, materials, etc) and so a different place probably did yours, or a person packaging probably accidentally gave you 2 of the same records.

IS he saying that there is a machine that plays the original source media (the MASTER TAPE ) and a stylus simply transfers the audio from the tape to the laquer?. If so ,NOW i get it!.
@tonyvv
@tonyvv Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what he's saying... The cutting lathe has a CUTTING stylus that cuts the groove. Your turntable has a PLAYBACK stylus that READS the groove.

The record runs through a shrink tunnel, and the heat in the tunnel shrinks the loose plastic tight to the jacket.

Making a flat record is actually much harder than you think. It's a thin 12 inch platter of vinyl that was melted and cooled. If there's any slight variation in the temperature between the stamper of either side (which has both hot steam and cold water running through it, a record can warp or dish. And then on top of that, if a pallet of records is shipped across the country from, say, New Jersey to California, sitting in a hot UPS trailer for 5 days across the country can be enough to warp records that were perfectly flat when they left the factory. Remember, a slight warp is not a problem so long as it doesn't skip the stylus. But most plants actually do a darn good job making flat records.

Music from the west would get though the iorn curtain via tourists or smugglers, music was then somehow copied onto old xray film material that was salvaged from hospitals then cut to a disk form. I'm sure it was not LP but more like gramarphone with a song each side You could play them around 30 to 50 x before it would start to badly degrade but this was a very cheap black market commodity know as music on the bones.

As we ALL know ,it is incredibly frustrating to buy a disc BRAND new only to get it home and find it defective or some couldn't give a f**k sleever has RAMMED the inner sleeve into the outer one so creasing it and screwing up the pleasure of the artwork.The sleevers in this video remind me of Kearney, Jimbo and Dolph, they look MINDLESS.Maybe, like many music lovers, they'e taken "something" to "enhance" their vinyl listening pleasure. Or maybe it's the FUMES from Hot Wax!!!!. CLANCEY: "tell it to the judge,beat boy".
