Cost cutting everywhere, but apparently it worked as that is a LOT of car for the money. We have a 2017 VW Golf Wolfsburg that is nearing 30k miles. So far, so good.

I'm sure that won't happen till after the warranty period. Ouch! I would never say a car is reliable until it has well over 100k miles and has been trouble free. Only time will tell how our VW does.

Pretty much any car these days should make it to 100k relatively trouble free. Most people who say otherwise are just butthurt fan boys of other brands. The only brand I'm leary of right now is Nissan because of their abysmal CVT.

VW cut cost to let people afford their cars. With all the regulation, every car needs a backup camera, airbags, electronics like traction control, abs, all stuff that comes at a price. The consumer can not choose to get a car without these options (people could decide to put emphasis on financial security for their family and sacrificing some road security). So, the company cuts what it can to ensure people can still buy new cars. Yet, car reviewers always look at these things in a condescending manner, like the product is absolute garbage. I wonder what kind of car this guy can afford to buy? It is a good move by VW to cut cost. This car is still quality and beautiful. If you have more money, there is plenty of expensive choice in the lineup.

There is no law mandating that any vehicle have enough tech to make it a self driving car. If a car company chooses to target 19 year olds, the equipment level will obviously reflect that.

It is advertised with 3 less horsepower because this is advertised with regular fuel (87.) the old Jetta was advertised as 150hp because in the fine print it said it can run on regular, but max horsepower was achieved with premium fuel. I think this is the reason for the small decrease.

Michael,..you're sounding like you don't like it when a car marker is making a lower cost car! The points that cause you to 'look down on' are actually just fine. I think that VW should be praised somewhat for trying to keep the cost of ownership lower. Even though I currently do not own a Volkswagen, I am impressed by what you've shown us here, and will consider one when 'buying time' rolls around in a couple of years. ( I love that color too!)

But the whole point of a VW is that is more upmarket than a Japanese rival, and has tauter steering and handling. Otherwise you are just buying a less reliable car (the VW) with no upsides to it.

Awesome review Micheal, do you think the power is equal to older Golf with all the fuel savings? Is it still a fun car or just reasonable; still a lot of hard plastic with so much more soft touch padding option that could be used.. Full time all wheel drive and cross over capabilities might save Jetta and sedans from loosing to the SUV market.

Nice review. One mistake made in this review is that the rear seat leg room is actually less in the new model than the old: form 38.1 inches to 37.4 inches. That’s not a big difference but if you are bumping up against those limits you would feel it. I hope they don’t do the same to the next Passat whenever they roll that out.

5:00. The gas trunk struts went away with the Mark 5 so the lift mechanism is similar to that on most cars now. For the Mark 4 and 5, they were used in order to get the lid up and out of the way when loading through such a small opening. The current conventional hinges do get the lid up and out of the way but the big disadvantage is that they intrude into the trunk space when closed. That's why VW used to use the complicated gas strut hinge. You just have to keep in mind that any large object placed in the trunk under those hinges is going to get squished when you close it.

I have had the new 2019 Jetta S trim with the 6 speed manual (yes you can still get a clutch with the base trim FTW) and have been loving it so far. Very good manual transmission training car and funny thing it is only 100 pound heavier than the BRZ / 86 with 30 more foot pounds of torque it is still quite fun to drive. At 4500 miles in I am still averaging about 37 MPG combined and I drive her kinda hard some days. Love the base features and tech, thank you for Android Auto VW. The rear seating room is pretty amazing for a compact sedan as you pointed out the trunk is huge. So I am leasing this one to build my credit score back up and in about 20 months I will be looking to turn her in to purchase either the new refresh of the Mustang GT or the BRZ / 86 depending on the changes. Awesome review as always and I fully agree this is a highly recommended car for the segment.

Hey Mark, up here at altitude, the 1.4 is a little pokey. 9 and a bit seconds to 60 is not fast. However, it never feels underpowered. Torque comes in low, like all of VW's small turbo engines. At sea level, it feels plenty quick. Like other VW turbos, it would be quite easy to tune this engine for more power if it feels lacking. I'd encourage you to go drive one if you have the time. Hope it helps! Mike

My Mk6 Sport which was a package in the SE level has plenty of features to keep me happy and a manual transmission. And with the absence of a sliding and tilting center armrest, what would be a cubbyhole behind it for the rear seat, and a trunk passthrough, the Mk7 just doesn't do it for me.

Liked it because it's a well made video, not because i like the car. As a mk5 owner all that cost cutting really seems like something i would notice day to day. It just doesn't have that premium feel that the mk5 pulled off so well. Not to mention the base model Jetta has a gigantic 2.5litre naturally aspirated 5 cylinder making a comparatively hot rod 170hp (at least from 2008+). It also has independent rear suspension and handles incredibly well for a car you can pick up for only a few thousand dollars. The interior may be lacking in technology compared to these new ones, but the look is timeless and it has a bit more of a luxury feel. Personally, I've taken care of the lacking tech with an aftermarket stereo, though there are still some features of the mk7 that would be difficult to achieve in the mk5

car is a good bang for the buck, for a decent daily driver this would be an awesome car, i feel like it really hits the segment where it needs to be. i would daily drive one, and i would track a golf r :)
