The Toyota Tundra was all-new in 2022 with a slew of upgrades. The most notable changes were the addition of a hybrid engine, upgraded infotainment, and a revised suspension system that delivers a greatly improved ride. The Tundra's interior also received upgrades to match the levels offered by competitors. A new range-topping Capstone trim provides a truly refined experience for those who want a touch of luxury in their capable truck. The lineup now includes seven trims, Double or CrewMax cabs, three bed lengths, and a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive.
Although the Tundra's various configurations can manage everything from work to family fun, competitors also provide a wide range of possibilities. The Ram 1500 has the most refined ride in the segment, with more trims and engine options. The Ford F-150 has the highest towing and payload ratings available. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has more engines and trims but a less attractive interior.

My 2018 V8 Silverado had better gas mileage. Toyota needs to return to the tried and true V8. Same gas mileage. Toyota did the same thing with the 4Runners in 2019, because they claimed better gas mileage, but my wife’s V6 doesn’t get better gas mileage and it sounds awful when you have to accelerate hard.
@ndm8447
@ndm8447 Жыл бұрын
@MPerry-ox9qb you have to consider power and torque when discussing gad milage. If the Toyota engine was tuned to have the samw horsepower and torque as the Silverado it would crush it in fuel economy. People say fuel economy is bad but the truck had almost 600 ft lbs of torque while the 6.2l Chevy V8 has 460 ft lbs of torque with worse fuel economy.

Toyota's are great. One of the biggest things for the Tundra for me is the price. They are drastically cheaper than an F-150, RAM 1500 or GMC 1500.

good honest review. Really enjoyedf it. As a TRD PRO owner since August, I'm unhappy with a few things too...the falken tires are awful. What made Toyota pick them over better all-seasons is beyond me...mine are coming off this week as they are particularly crap with even a dusting of snow. The centre console feels REALLY cheap and nasty for a vehicle I paid so much for. My MPG is actually worse than yours. The difference between city and highway is massive. On a 350+ mile drive I achieve 20.8mpg which is excellent. Regular driving in town?....I'm in the 14s, which is honestly just freaking terrible. I personally like the simple tailgate and the elbow button has come in VERY handy on multiple occasions. As far as bed payload in the TRD pro in particular? It's awful. Towing capacity is fine and I say that as someone who's an extremely experienced tower. I truly believe that anyone needing 10,000lbs or above should ignore ALL half ton trucks and go to a 3/4. Again, good review. I've subscribed!

Just keep in mind 80% of new cars have ALWAYS come with crap tires. I was in the auto industry for 15 years before my career change. Tires and suspension was a big part of my specialty. It was extremely common for new car owners to need tires by 17 to 20k miles due to low tred. Complain the car or truck was crap in the snow since day one. I'd get them something much better and the vehicle would be 100% better in snow after words. I myself have maybe owned 20 cars. 8 of which were new or newer. I always changed the tires asap. The stock ones were garbage. It's a deal the car manufacturers make with tire companies. It's so annoying like you said.. pay so dang much for a premium vehicle and you get crap tires. It's mind blowing. Years ago I was excepting of it. Now days. Heck no. Theu want too much for vehicles to have junk tires.

Couple comments. First, not sure it’s smart to tow more than 12,000 pounds with ANY half ton. Regardless of mfr claims/testing. Second, you have a TRD Pro. Just how much payload were you expecting?? Have you looked at ANY top trim trucks (I know you have). NONE have more than 2000 lbs. Most are right around 1500 lbs. Now, I agree…I’m not a fan of the new Tundra, either. I actually own a 2018 F150 Platinum 3.5EB. Just trying to be fair with the numbers.

I looked and evaluated full size and mid-size trucks for months. Of course during the price escalation. I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $60,000+ for a mid level trim truck. So l ended up with a used ‘21 Ram Laramie. In the 2000+ miles I have put on it, I have experienced 21 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined. The only negative so far is the bed length at 5’7”. But, I knew that going in as that was what would fit in our a rage.

Good honest review. Though when you basically said that the towing and hauling limits of the truck were not sufficient, in all reality if you Actually Need more than this truck offers you Really Need a 3/4 ton truck. I would not even consider towing more than 12k pounds with any 1/2 ton truck even if it was rated for more than 12k pounds. I firmly belive Toyota rates their trucks at a significantly safer and more intelligent maximum rating.

Bought my new ‘18 F150 loaded Lariat at the right time, list $62K but bought for $50K - Before COVID/Chip shortage/supply chain issues. Regular demand far exceeded capacity to build & Ford/GM/Ram took advantage with outrageous price increases well above list prices. However, marketplace is moving back into better balance and I am seeing the big FL dealers knocking $6-$9k+ off List price as their 2023 inventories grow substantially. (Same truck today listed at $62K when I bought became $75K). Those rip days are over and the dealers know it!

The Non-Hybrid has built-in storage below the seat. Starting in 2022 they did away with the flat floor. The storage is large. I keep 3 folding chairs a couple of blankets and some towing supplies. If I were in the market for full size it would be Ram. Here's hoping the next gen. Good and honest review. Beautiful truck but I tend to agree that Toyota isn’t quite to the level as its competitors, at least in regard to trucks. They make a great product but I went with the Tremor after looking at the TRD Pro. There’s almost too much tech in these newer vehicles and it seems that there are some gremlins in them, especially in the radio and camera but I’d imagine those will eventually be fixed with software updates. The TRD does have some nice ground clearance though. Nice review sir.

I love my 2023 Limited CrewMax. It's in the Army Green color and it is absolutely gorgeous. I get constant compliments on it. People are way too hard on this truck. V8s are dead and obsolete for most things... get over it. You're only going to be seeing V8s in super large trucks or sports cars moving forward. Imagine comparing a Toyota to a Ford. Sorry but Ford's quality and reliability is garbage... how many recalls are they up to now? I've been in new Ford trucks of the same generation and was not impressed at all by the interior or ergonomics... all cheap hard shiny plastic. My Toyota has leather interior surfaces and will always be more reliable than a Ford even with it's turbos. Don't even get me started on Dodge aka Chrysler. And there is plenty of power for me (I opted for the non-hybrid model). Smooth and sturdy. Also, who buys a half-ton truck and then complains about MPG? I can drive 421 miles on a single tank... not bad at all given the other stats of the vehicle.

Well tow rate went from 7500 to 10500lbs that's a plus on the new platinum has a side step and other stuff if any one has looked into it. So don't go by just the TRD pro model. Also I've found that Toyota rides less stiff and bumpy compared to others especially Ford so I'd rather have that. But yes Toyota needs to a bit more competitive in certain areas with their trucks.

What is the truck for you? My guess is an F150 Tremor. I agree with your complaint about the back seat storage problem. I really wish Toyota could find a different place to put those batteries. To complain about 12klb towing on a 1/2-ton truck doesn't seem valid. I know it is an option but what percentage of f150's tow that much. I think most people who want to tow that much weight will opt for something more capable than a 1/2 ton. It is hard to compare apples to apples, but this is the TRD Pro. I think people who buy this are in the same market as a Raptor. How much does a Raptor tow? What is the max payload of a Raptor? What is the MPG of the Raptor? I like your point about the tailgate on the TRD pro could be better. A step comes with the other Tundra high trim levels. The TRD pro omits it for departure angle reasons. If you want a TRD pro and a step you can have the dealer put one on for $350. I think it is important to note that a ford tailgate step isn't standard either. The biggest complaint of a TRD pro-Tundra should be the lack of tow hooks. And maybe the fact that it is sitting on 33's instead of 35's. I like that you pointed out the backseat storage is awful. It might be worth noting that the center console just doesn't feel as nice as other brands. I would like to see a comparison of the Tundra TRD pro with the F150 Tremor. I think those would be the best comparisons. I assume the Tremor is the Truck that you would purchase? If so how would you spec it out, and how much would it tow?

The Raptor tow capacity is 8,500... over 2k less than the Tundra. The F150 is up to 9,400 lbs. I think the Ram edges out the Tundra by 1k lbs. But oh, "the big three beat out the Tundra in about every category". Bullshit.

Nice review. I have a 2013 F150 Lariat. Love it, but it's soaking me for cash in the last year or so. Yes, 10 years old. I get that. I fully expect stuff like alternator, belts, radiator, or similar to need replacment, but both IWE's failed. It should have been a recall. $1200 per front wheel for full fix. And now I have a failed Molded Lead Frame (attaches to valve body in Trans) which is $800 in labor and $250 in parts to fix. I'd be less critical but these drivetrain issues at just 83K miles are just not acceptable. The 2014 and later Chevy Silverado's come equiped with a powerful Eco Tec 6.2L but also nearly guaranteed lifter failure due to the AFM system. The RAM is an option but I've worked with Chrysler designers in the past and seen too much sketchy crap to go that route. I'm gonna try and stick with the F150 and reach 150k miles before trading in.....unless something else major fails sooner. Long story short I'm very likely going Tundra next time. I'd rather get soaked at the pump a bit more than deal with seemingly persistent reliability issues. As for the 12k pound tow limit on this TRD, what the hell kind of towing capacity do you need ? Hauling cattle or a yacht ? Or What ? Anything more than that needs a 3/4 ton or better just for proper braking power. As for the the more limited back seat floor storage and the hump under the seat agree that's a negative. But you do get more clearance with the recessed drive shaft. I guess 1 upside of the back seat floor storage is that it's all contained and stuff won't be sliding around on the floor.

It not like he was pressed for time it was 13 years ago from the last redesign? He seems out of touch of what the US market wants and I think Toyota would be better served replacing him with someone more in touch of what most consumers want out of a truck. I’m a Toyota fan too and have owned 2 Tundras an 07 and a 2020. Recently got up close to study a new 2023 TRD pro. Sorry I wasn’t impressed and in many ways felt cheap to me. Not a good truck with that turbo! I've heard people are having problem with the wastegate and the only way to replace it is by replacing the turbo cuz I guess they're fused together & it's a difficult job thousands of dollars in labor & who knows what those turbos will cost 🤷 I'm sticking with the V-6 Tacoma manual transmission 💯😎

I don’t know, kind of a stretch with the negatives I think, to be honest, seems like you wanna not like it… If you want fuel economy Then buy a compact car. If you want to tow a lot buy something like an f350.…illusion of room? .. it’s got loads of space in the cabin, sit in a Miata, ha! the quality and upscale interior is on par with luxury brands … and, nothing will outlast it.. if you have deep pockets then god bless, buy whatever you’d like, again and again, cause that may be the case where you have to do so, 1in my view vehicles are consumables, longevity is important and can never be discounted, Stalantis makes their interiors sweet until the problems start happening then the love wears off, so, beware, just keep that account fairly well populated with cash if you go in another direction, fords have their problems too…… and when you breakdown with a competitors brand just phone a friend with a Toyota… ha! .. love the videos, be well! .. check out the 1794 ! …

RAM, Chevy/GMC, and Ford don't have better numbers if you compare apples to apples. Most people look at Ford and are amazed, it tows 14k. Yeah, it does tow 14k, but that is a 2-wheel drive truck single cab. I found that watching videos of people with the GMC/Chevy gimmick tailgate, takes forever to set it up and put it away just to use it, so yeah, not a fan. I also noticed your drive mode is not in ECO, a driver makes or breaks fuel economy. Good video.

The new Ford F-150 SuperCrew 4X4 with the 3.5L engine and Max Tow Package will tow 13,800 lbs.
@ridynh7923
@ridynh7923 Жыл бұрын
@@theRooster722 yes, but I question if anyone would feel safe even towing 10,000lbs with a truck that light. and the payload for that config is also 1,700lbs max, before the bells and whistles. A far cry from what Ford states as “max.” Payload is often overlooked when looking at trucks. My 2022 Titan xd has payload of 2200 lbs and towing of 11,200lbs. Those are numbers as shown on my truck. Hell, even the f250 in the 4x4 crew cab 6.2l v8 has a towing capacity of 12,500lbs, and payload of around 2,500lbs. Suddenly, that makes the f250 look not to impressive, and the Titan look way more impressive.

@@theRooster722, well… not many people even give them the time of day and make that judgement based purely off of lack of sales, and the lack of sales has nothing to do with people not like him with a drive. Rather, it comes down to brand loyalty, and bashing the opposite brands. I have not found many reviews of people who don’t like the way the Titan drives. (Towing or not towing) The biggest complaint about them, is the apparent lack of technology compared to other brands. Fine, that’s fair, to each is own…but who actually uses all that? Truck quality seems to come down to “what size of screen the infotainment system has”. If it doesn’t have a 52 inch infotainment screen, people go the other direction. If you need to “one up” your friend or neighbor on the technology then sure… go with other brands. But the drive quality and impressive towing capability of the Titan is undeniable. I had an f150, and it was a very comfortable truck. Compared to the Titan though, the f150 towing was far inferior. I am not bashing the Ford by any means. But when people say, if you want a heavy duty truck, go with the f250. But the Titan xd is just a capable. Yes, I am still comparing to the f250 vs f150.
@theRooster722
@theRooster722 Жыл бұрын
@@ridynh7923 the biggest reason the Titan never caught on is the styling. I've never towed with one, so I'll take your word for it's towing ability.

Toyota could have done so much better with this truck. Where's the recovery hooks? And why didn't they make the V8 engine an option, and the interior looks cool but it's cheap and gimmicky. I'd just buy a limited with the standard v6 twin turbo and mod it. Just my take.

Every review, first thing knocked is the low payload and towing capacity. Let’s be honest, 90% of the people that buy a $70k truck aren’t towing diddly. Maybe a few bags of topsoil here and there or a sheet of plywood if lucky, but most would have groceries, a stroller, or a recycling bag in the back…no one really cares about the payload on any full size truck
