The New Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is my favorite trim of the new Toyota Tundra. After driving all models in a recent event including the Capstone, I think this one rides the best and delivers the best package.
In this video we'll take a look at the Tundra TRD Pro. I'll share with you why I think this is the halo model of tundra line up and not the capstone.

Always love your videos AMD! And it was nice to catch up with you last week! I love my Tundra TRD Pro for many reasons you pointed out, but still can't believe the "reverse D" defect I had on the hood emblem. It's definitely a solid truck and after driving the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado this week side by side with the Tundra, it seems Toyota did its homework in coming up with a "balanced" truck that hits the sweet spot.

Thank you for the videos AMD. These trucks have issues and Toyota has really dropped the ball on quality control. I picked up my 2023 Platinum last week. It spent 4 out of the 8 days I had it at the dealership. Build date was 11/22. When I drove it home from the dealership I felt the suspension bottom out twice. Turns out that the air suspension was out of spec and it was not adjusted correctly from the factory per the dealership. They verified and performed a TSB for it. That fixed the issue. Then my A Pillar began to rattle incessantly. The dealer found that the clips were broken inside the A Pillar. The dealer put foam inside it because toyota told them they didn’t have the clips available to fix it due to shortages. The rattling continued. Then my center console got worse. They rattle straight out of the factory and it got worse in the 8 days I owned it. The dealer put felt inside. It helped by about 50%. On the way home from the dealership service the drivers side window started to whistle bad. I rolled it up and down many times and it wouldn’t go away. The next day I drove for about 2 hours and the front seats have a horizontal support bar positioned way too far back towards the seat back. If your anatomy isn’t just right, you’ll be sitting on a thinly padded bar. The seats are poorly designed with minimal padding. That was the last straw and I took a hit and sold it back to the dealer and lost a couple grand in the taxes I paid. Well worth getting rid of it. Toyota may get this right in a few years but I’d highly recommend staying away from this truck right now. We own a newer highlander and a Venza and they’re great. So im not a toyota hater. And I owned a 2004 tundra for 15 trouble free years waiting for this new generation. Very disappointing.

Wow that’s heart breaking and very upsetting ! I think you likely did the right thing getting rid of that truck sounds like possibly a lemon to me. I also own 2 Toyota products 2018 tundra and 2015 rx450 h Lexus and sold my 2006 tacoma and love them all with very little issues. I think Toyota will get their act together ,it may just take a couple years to get the bugs out! If they don’t get their act together people will shop elsewhere. I buy Toyota because of their reliability, and keep it simple style ,and will continue to do so until they stop being reliable, then I’m done!

What happens when as a company, you take a $39000 vehicle and tack on $3000 worth of silly add-ons and charge $64000 for it. It compares to something from maybe 5 years ago which would have been criticized for cheapness even at $29000.

I just haven’t warmed up to these new Tundra’s! From the total lack of recovery hooks on their “ Off Road” models to the wastegate issues on the turbo’s plus the fact that many 5.7 V8’s have gone over a million miles. Talk to me about this truck when one reaches one million miles & maybe I’ll be a believer? I’ve seen many videos on KZfaq of these trucks going off road & literally were falling apart ! 😂

No v6 turbo is gonna be stronger then a v8. V6 truck it’s not a factory choice, it’s the government choice. The more technology it’s on added to a vehicle the more parts are going to fail. If you drive like grandpa a v6 will give you better mpg then a v8 for sure, but if you are towing the v8 will be better. I used to have a 08 tundra and the mpg was horrible even driving like a grandpa So the problem it’s the government and technology. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@pelecho hi Antonio. I also love the V8 tundra. I have a 1917 and a 2021 and the 21 model gets pretty good mileage around 19 on the highway and 16 around town so that’s not too bad for a V-8. And I don’t drive like a grandpa. Even when I’m doing 90 miles an hour on the highway it’s still gets about 17 miles per gallon. There’s nothing wrong with that. The V6 turbo kick in at that mile Per hour and you get horrible mileage. I love my V-8 tundras.

Our father has a 2020 Tundra TRD. It is incredibly good. But we will never buy this new generation. No V8, two turbos and/or hybrid batteries to worry about after 200K-300K. Nobody knows how constant towing will treat those new technologies in 4-5 years. The cost cuts in the 2022 are also very noticeable. The famous interior rattles and squeaks reflect the cheap plastics you have shown. I have been very disappointed with Toyota quality ever since most of their 2018 models.

@TheMrDudiness Great comment. Unfortunately Toyota has fallen upon its old formula, using a hybrid more as a poor substitute for a super charger rather than for fuel saving. It would have been better if they used a system similar to the Rav-4 Prime that used the battery to give a powerful boost, and allow electric only operation for a few miles. This could have been done in place of a turbo, and the longevity of the V-6 might’ve been legendary. The turbo V-6 by the way was one of worst trouble spots mentioned by CU.

Hi Ahmed! I really enjoy watching all your videos and I've learned alot. And if there's one thing I have learned is about the importance of checking and changing my oil. It's #1. I have a 2018 Tacoma and we all know where and how that oil filter service is done. And the Tacoma TRD Skid Plate has a door to access the oil filter. So, I wondered why you didn't show the location of the oil filter on the Tundra when I noticed the Tundra TRD Skid Plate does not appear to have the same door. Also, you didn't show us the Engine Compartment. (Always love to see the engine). And too, you show us the ginormous fuel tank but, what is the capacity? Maybe a "tech quickie" video to supplement?

Can you do a video talking about the 4wd system. I’m curious as to how it works, is it an open differential like prior generations. Currently trying to decide if it’s worth switching my gen2 sequoia for the new 1 but I’m hearing that it can’t be driven in 4wd like the gen 2.

It is a sexy looking truck for sure. Looks awesome. I still think I will hold on to my 2017 tundra with a 5.7 and my 2006 with 4.7L. All electrical crap and sensors and batteries are not gonna be cheap to replace after warranty is out. And working on hybrid system is not something backyard mechanic should mess with. These are still awesome trucks hands down

100% man. One of my previous cars was a 2007 Camry LE hybrid. Needed a battery replacement at 197K miles. That was a $7K job from the cheapest mechanic I found. I was lucky to re-sell it for $2500 and buy a 2008 SE with a dealer-fixed 2.4L engine without the oil burning issue. That 2008 still drives like new at 210K and 14 years later. 0 issues.

We purchased the new 1794 Edition w/o TRD. We did this because it tows better than the TRD version. This is due to the adjustable load leveling suspension option. We test drove a GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2L and a Ford F150 w/ 3.5 Ecoboost. The Tundra was more comfortable to drive and ride as a passenger. Our Tundra mileage has been decent. 17 MPG mixed, 22 straight highway. 16 MPG towing 6500 lbs over elevations of 500’ to 2,000’. We kept our 2003 Tundra SR5 “sport” with 230,000 miles for farm use.

Good morning, AMD. I have a question. On my 2007 Toyota Camry LE, the shop where I took my car to get my new tires installed said my lower control arms need to be replaced, which I did confirm so my question is since I'm going to be replacing anything else I should replace since I'm there like ball joints or something? Would I have to take my car back to get realignment? Thanks

AMD, Did you borrow this TRD Pro from David at Automotive Press? 😉 You focused on the T-O-Y-O-T-A printed on the front grille and dash. On a white pickup like this, I think the classic company 'signature' is the word TOYOTA written in red letters across the tailgate. 🤩 As a truck, my only real concern with the Tundra is the shrunken interior which is a very common theme in every Toyota that has come along in the last 5 years.

If given the choice to keep a vehicle for the next 15+ years, used for towing an Airstream camper, less than 5k miles total use per year, which would u choose: 2021 Sequoia Platinum 4WD or 2023 Sequoia Capstone 4WD? I love my 2021 and that it’s NA V8, but hate not having the 360 camera, parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert/braking, heated steering wheel, and seats that actually cooled effectively, else my 2021 is flawless for me.

You showing the poor fit and finish of this truck is why I watch your channel. I noticed it twice with two separate tundras I saw at the dealer waiting for my Toyota care service (which btw is a whole mother story. The tech put 4.9 quarts in my 1.8 which calls for 4.4. The 2.0 takes 4.9) most channels floss over the troubled things.

One of those 4 cylinder engines are very prone to oil overfilling. It damages one of the emission devices, or EGR valve? I forget the specifics. Expensive repair and wty won't cover unless you can prove a Toyota tech made the mistake. Read it here on You Tube in last 4 mo or so. Can't remember the channel but it's the guy that always teaches how much effect slanted driveways have on checking oil level. Also about not checking oil level cold due to heated volume expansion. CCN does this particular comment too. I wonder if it was CCN that did the piece on overfilling too..just can't remember. The takeaway though is to drain off overage as soon as you discover it. Definitely don't wait for 'next' oil change.
@pryme2013

@@user-3tf67bk46u Yeah the 1.8 is fine. Not overfilled enough to do anything. Oil came out fine no foam or bubbles etc. still shows incompetence. Only reason I get it done at the dealer is because it’s free for the first two years. They do 10k mile oil changes but that’s absurd so I do one between them doing one because 5k is enough for my cars.
@user-3tf67bk46u
@user-3tf67bk46u Жыл бұрын
@@pryme2013 👍 Ya, you're wise to do the one at 5k. I read this a lot on here, owner's asking the dealer, you sure that's often enough? And the dealers encouraging them to not worry. It's because they KNOW the issues won't surface till after the wty is up.

@@user-3tf67bk46u Absolutely. It’s crazy. That’s why I don’t like to buy used and would for sure not buy a lease return. A vehicle is expensive. And for a full synthetic change with good filter it only costs me about 30 dollars to change the corollas oil.

I got a third-gen SR5 with the TRD Off-Road premium package and some other bits...it's the best of both worlds and no hybrid, moonroof or gaudy Pro red trim. However, I had a second-gen SR5 and there were many things about the interior that seemed better than the new trucks. Regardless, It's a far better ride and the improved torque is noticeable. The over-engineering of the rear suspension is impressive.

AMD would you be willing to do a show on various shifting, towing, hauling, eco/sport modes on Toyota trucks/SUVs? How they work and when to use what? My 2012 Tacoma TRD PRO had at least 9 4WD modes, my 2022 Tundra SR5 w/ tow package has eco/sport, tow/haul... the manual notoriously don't help make it clear precisely what these different modes do (timing or compressions changes? Less gear hunting when towing, etc.). Thanks for considering.
