Donny, since you are asking, a general rule for machining I always tried to impress upon my students was to keep things as short and thus stiff as possible. Vibration is the enemy. Poor surface finish aside, it causes inaccuracies in finished dimensions. Long overhangs promote vibration. (Insert a ruler clamped short on the desk edge and caused to vibrate vs. same ruler clamped long on the desk edge to prove this point.). In machining the vibrations are still there the difference being you cannot see them with your eye most of the time. Tons of pressure are being applied at the point of cut with any cutting tool be it boring bar, tool bit, end mill, drill bit or etc.. Help these cutters do their intended job by keeping things as rigid as possible.

Dony, the content is excellent, as usual. Thanks. Carbide insert tooling is the way to go; look for inserts with multiple cutting edges, good relief, and chip breakers. Once you do, you'll never want to go back to the brazed carbide bits. I also suggest you invest in a quick-change tool holder. Last, toss the vernier approximater calipers and use a proper C-type micrometer.

Whenever I need to replace a bearing I take it to my local bearing supply house. They usually have it on hand and it's way cheaper than going to say MTD .bearing supply houses are directly operated by the manufacturer of the bearings.

I worked for a bearing house/distributor for years, the manufacturers only supply the bearings to the distributors who then sell to the public for example motion industries or bearing headquarters, etc. Also a bearing such as that would normally have either set screws or an eccentric collar to lock it to the shaft ??
@ruben_balea
@ruben_balea 2 ай бұрын
@@mudell.hunter0426 Most of those machines are very cheaply made nowadays, they don't care if the shaft rotates and/or slides inside the bearing race, it's even better if all parts wear faster because it seems they make more money from overpriced spare parts than from sellling the actual machines. The next model may have a plastic bushing instead of a steel bearing.

I've used both a ball hone and a brake wheel cylinder hone to open up the bearing I.D. The nice thing with a small hone is you have plenty of control to slowly work up to the final size. They also don't tend to heat up the part and are designed to be used on hardened metal and leave a nice smooth finish.

I have boring bars with carbide insert cutters. The inserts are not expensive. If a cutter gets worn or chipped, just remove the screw and rotate to the next edge. The tool post remains at the same setting. I use my boring bars with the cutter horizontal. The relief angles are included in the cutter and boring bar design. Glad you were able to get this bearing to fit. I also find having metal lathe and milling machine allow being able to make many parts, in my case for tools and jigs for wood turning.
@simondenis9511

Excellent comment! Cutting inserts specialized for hard materials are also available. You should consult with your local machine tools provider. These inserts might come in handy. Putting the cutter horizontal makes the readings on the lathe dials accurate. Also, when making an internal reading with your calipers, make it with both hands, spreading the lower jaws lightly instead of your thumb. That helps making sure the upper jaws are flat against the surfaces you’re measuring. I know that might be difficult when holding a camera… but accurate readings are key to accurate machining.

I had a very similar problem with the bearing center of my diy generator, that is boring out such hard material on the lathe, being a tool and die maker I had a lot of different grades of tungsten carbide tips, but because I'd recently made a mount for my die grinder on the tool post, I decided to bore it out using the 40,000rpm die grinder ceramic bit. Great video, I'm very impressed how you are taking so much off, thank you for sharing your experience.

I turned down armature commutators & I did some general machining on the Rupes sander polishers because the armature fans had a habit of spinning on the armature shaft which wore away some of the composite mica insulation meaning that we applied some JB weld to the armature shaft so that' the armature fan became a press fit on the armature shaft !

First, so nice to see someone who tightens all three of the chuck fingers. It is amazing how many "machinists" don't do this. I would suggest using the largest boring bar you can fit into your lathe and the hole in question. This will cut down on deflection of the bar and give more accurate results. Still, your fix worked and congratulations on a job well done!

Very nice save on the snow blower. Fortunately, bearings are one of the parts that are completely independent of equipment manufacturers. Almost every manufacturing company buys their bearings from a bearing manufacturer, so standard replacements are almost always available. I put new spindle bearings in my 1956 Delta drill press that were exactly the same as the original ones. The impeller would have been more difficult if you hadn't been able to fix it. That would have been a trip to the snow blower bone yard. Great work, as always. I enjoy your channel.

Good improvisation, Hoss. Not sure if you did this or not, but it would be a longer lasting fix to clean the old grease out of this bearing and apply new grease. It was a used bearing to start with and then overheated in the machining process so the original grease was likely no good.

I have pretty well the same Briggs snowblower: Elite 1530 30" with 306CC engine. This is the worst snowblower in the world to find parts for, always out of stock or back-ordered. When you do actually find parts in stock, they cost an arm and a leg because you have to order them from the States: exchange rate and shipping, sometimes they are available here in Canada but the price is way over inflated. I wish I had a lot of things and two tools I wish I had room for and the money are a mill, like a Bridgeport and a lathe. The closest to these two is a small drill press. Two other devices I wish I had are a Kubota GR2120 garden tractor or a BX series and all of those things I could get to put on them like a snow blower, lawn mower and power broom. Your setup there is quite nice. Do you have a lubrication flood system for your lathe that constantly bathes the piece in an oil water mix? I know they have them for mills but do lathes have them as well, I wonder?

He does not have the rigidity for that. In addition nobody is machining cylinder rods (not arms) with ceramic... We machine UNDER the case hardening.

@@ShainAndrews maybe your not but we use it to machine away the hard surface then switch to carbide to replace eyes.

@@donyboy73 What you really want... Is a grinding post for this specific application. If you want to try ceramics you will need an appropriate boring bar and insert. Kennametal is an industry leader in tooling. Better yet search around for tooling suppliers in your area. See if you can bend their ear for a few minutes. Not sure if you are brazing the carbide on or buying the bars... A distributor will greatly help you. Just be straight with them, because they are looking for manufacturing, and the occasional machine shop. I also know they spend more time on their backside than they will ever admit.

Great video Don, have you tried Nylatron G.S. graphite nylon bearing material it machines easily and outlasts brass bushings and is lower cost and is self lubricating.

Another great video! Certainly beyond my expertise, but I like watching your videos. With the many major mechanical issues that you showcase in some of your videos, I'm surprised that B&S is still in business and power equipment manufacturers continue to use B&S engines. Must be the price point on the engines.

Bearings are hardened metal... Nice work with taking your time! Funny thing about adding a new machine to the shop -- y'always need additional tooling! Time to build a tool post grinder! ;-)

You don't need to use the OEM bearing. Just measure inner and outer diameter and width. Then order from a bearing specialist. Also, it will be cheaper.

That is an odd shaft size so I'm not seeing an option, but will throw out McMaster-Carr as a possible source for "universal" type components like bearings, hardware, etc. Not sure if it works in Canada, though.
