Here's What's WRONG With The ENGINE In My $3,500 Corvette

I bought a 2000 Corvette that sucked some water up in the intake and now has a pretty major engine issue. But it still runs and drives. I said I'd take it and by absolute chance they were on our way home to Wichita with an empty trailer. I swung into Neodesha, KS and handed over $3,500 of the walking around money, loaded the car up on the trailer and pointed the truck towards the home. Now we're tearing it apart to find the problem.

Change the oil for the transmission and differential. Those are also most likely contaminated with flood water esp that water went up into the crankcase.

Even though you know I’m not a LS fan I have rebuilt many engines. Respectfully I don’t think you have a compression issue. The minimum compression in any one cylinder should not be less than 70 percent of the highest cylinder. No cylinder should read less than 690 kPa (100 psi). For example, if the highest pressure in any one cylinder is 1035 kPa (150 psi), the lowest allowable pressure for any other cylinder would be 725 kPa (105 psi). (1035 x 70% = 725) (150 x 70% = 105). I do think that if you don’t find a bent pushrod you’ll find the bottom end is knocking because of it being driven with one or both head gasket being blown. I’m looking forward to your discovery. PS don’t send that engine out to be rebuilt. Do it yourself. JR you definitely have the skill set to build it. Let us watch that content. Thanks.

First thing I would have done is dump the oil, change the filter, fill it up with cheap oil and a bottle of marvel mystery oil. Run it for a while, 30 - 60 minutes or so. Let it cool, then do the compression test and anything else you want to check, do (new plugs, wires). If it seems ok, dump the oil and filter again. Put new oil and filter in, maybe some Lucas oil stabilizer too. If it doesn't make any bad noises just drive it. Watch for any coolant getting in the oil again... If not and it runs well and makes good power go with that and decide if your keeping it or selling it and do another oil and filter change in 500 miles...

I ran into a similar situation long ago. Engine ingested water and hydrolocked. Bent one rod, in turn shortening the stroke on that cylinder. Thus lowering the compression. The shortened rod causing the bottom of the piston to contact counterweight on crankshaft every revolution. The bearings were fine. Good luck.
@supercariobros
@supercariobros 2 жыл бұрын
It would be worth changing the oil a few times and running some Lucas to see if it quiets down and regains its compression. That tapping didn't increase in volume with revs, just taps. For the people?
@lorad350
@lorad350 2 жыл бұрын
when it ingested the water, one of the cylinders, probably the one with low compression, suffered a bent rod. (Makes the stroke shorter). The bent rod is hitting the bottom of the cylinder every revolution making the noise. Milky oil may be because they haven't changed the oil since this happened. Doesn't take a lot of water to make it milky. Let it set for a few days, the water should settle to the bottom and catch it when you drain the oil to see how much.

Quite common for head gasket failure between cylinders 5 and 7 since they fire so close together, especiallyif it overheated (new radiator???). Not sure why you would continue troubleshooting once you determined it had water in the oil though. Not what I would've done, especially since I recently repaired a Jeep 4.7 that sucked up water (owner tried driving it through deep water) but that's just me, the one who's sitting in a recliner.

The reason it is hard to remove plugs from aluminium heads is often the plugs were put in when the head was hot. You should never fully torque plugs or fasteners in hot aluminium. You will either destroy the threads trying to undo them or the threads will strip when the metal cools down.

You need to do the timing light trick. I know it doesn't have a distributor, but it will still work. Hook up to any plug wire, run engine. See if noise is in time with light or double the light. In time= upper end, double time the light= bottom end.

Cool video JR ! I hope you will get this vett back on the road soon. It’s a really nice car that doesn’t need a lot of work put into it except for the engine of course and it sounds like that’s not going to be that expensive to rebuild. On another note, you had talked about the wind blowing through your building. When I worked in a similar building with a vent fan , the wind would blow through it causing the building to get very cold in winter. I came up with the idea to make a frame with some thick insulation board and I screwed it to the frame of the vent so the wind couldn’t blow through it. This helped keep the building warmer and saved on the heating bill as well. You might want to give that a try and save some money and stay warmer at the same time. Thanks!

Leaking compression through a blown head gasket possibly. My guess would be around cylinder 7 since it was down on compression and/or possibly cylinder 1 that you couldn’t fit the compression tester on since we don’t know how much it had. The “water” came from somewhere and the likely culprit is the cooling system.

I agree. Why the new radiator? I think the old owner got it more than just a little wet under a viaduct. The bent up bar up front without any other damage behind that!?!? I also think it went in the water HARD. Front clip different color 🙄

@@mikemyers7332 I was just going off this video, didn’t hear about that happening. I just watched the other video. Regardless, I never trust sellers or what they say. I think he mentioned the car having something like 7 owners, it could definitely have a bad head gasket still. I feel like it’s suspect that the previous owner knowingly swamped the motor, and made zero attempt to change fluids, just sold it. You would think they would try draining the fluids at minimum before giving up. Especially considering the guy mentioned it being at a shop and it has a new radiator, why not $20 in oil. It just seems unlikely to me. I mean crazier stories have been true but you just can’t trust anybody anymore to give you the honest truth.

Looks like a head gasket is leaking coolant into the oil and it spun a rod bearing. The new radiator also sorta supports that theory. Backyard mechanic tossing parts at it when it is over heating... How full was the coolant reservoir? If the gasket goes at the right spot, it will just leak into the oil and not smoke at all.

One other thing you can do to maybe help narrow down the noise to a particular cylinder is run the engine with the spark plug out of the suspected cylinder and see if the knock goes away due to the rod/piston assembly having a lot less load on it. It doesn't work every time but it's another diagnostic tool for the bag. On cars with hard to reach spark plugs disabling fuel injectors with a scan tool will reveal the cylinder with a knock sometimes as well, assuming it's a rod knock/wrist pin noise of course. Also works on diesels with fuel knock issues due to a bad injector(s).

I would still check the push rods, it could be just bent a little bit just enough to create the tick tick and you won't be able to see it in the rocker arms, and it would make sense when the one cylinder is a little lower on compression. See how much play the rocker arms have when the valves are completely closed in the lower compression cylinder and also stick a bore camera in that cylinder to see if there is something wrong with the cylinder or it hade contact with a valve.

Since the radiator has been replaced, suspect an overheating problem. That might point to a warped head/blown head gasket, which would explain the water in the oil...

Sounds like a 2fer. Hydro lock bent a rod (sounds like rod knock) and pushed the head (milk shake) for the deadly combo. Hopefully the block isn't isn't too gone from the bent rod and you can and get it machined. I'd like to see you drop the pan so we can see the sparkly oil. Or just yank that thing because it's on its last legs. Good luck ether way!

That's my guess. Usally if it's a bearing the knock turns into lock up.

Look at all that tree debris at base of the windshield. Somebody left that under a tree for a while. I think someone mistook the Corvette for an S2000 (completely different car, an enthusiast could never make that mistake, but a dipstick with a heavy foot would) revved that poor LS1 to a million rpms and broke it. Congrats on another JRGO broken car rescue.
