My speculation after the spring pullback was that cards would uptick through Aug into Sept when people are back from summer vacations. Baseball playoffs are around the corner, football is about to kick off and NBA preseason isn’t far away. Hasn’t quite come to fruition but there are some good signs.

I’m glad that it seems like you’re starting to look into vintage lately. Ultra modern is sexy and flippable, but as you know, the risk is immense. If one is willing to play the long game, investing in iconic vintage cards is rewarding in its own right, regardless of how the market ebbs and flows.

Prices will be headed up in September. NHL, NFL begin in September, and NBA is right around the corner in October. The Boys of Summer are headed into the MLB playoffs at this time. Statistics show that the volume takes place in the season, and this makes sports cards/memorabilia in a position of seasonal strength in the fall of the year.

Great stuff, Brad. I can see NBA really pushing upwards especially as the hype gets bigger into October (same for the NHL as well with it now being featured on ESPN & TNT, should lead to more eyeballs in general). I'll be curious if we see that in-season dip in October/November for the NFL and a dip in MLB in November/December.

Far as I can tell from my travels, changes in stricter grading and high encapsulation costs definitely affected prices on modern cards. Seems vintage cards are beginning to sound like everything made prior to 2000. Thing is, most of our inventory is vintage, or I'm becoming an old man, lol. Probably both, lol.. Anyway, I'd have to say, that with the Topps wrap-up, PSA high price costs, and a clear over production of encapsulated shiny plastic cards by a variety of hack encapsulation retailers in this era, I'd fall back on the principal players from say the early 90's at this time because their collector value is clearly trackable, which makes collecting the key players much less of a risk. Yes, you can still find a lot of cards and sets floating around for a reasonable deal, but unless you plan on buying Panini another Yacht or three, I'd tread lightly on paying far more than one should on speculative card boxes which tend to have less and less of what young hobbyists are interested in. Amazing in this era, how so many underachievers are literally obsessed with perfection via the PSA 10 grades on their cards. - If they themselves demanded the same level of excellence, they would focus more on the "accomplishments of a player, rather than buying a card because of it's encapsulation brand." - So sorry, but there was a time, when sports card collecting was based on the best of the best players, versus PSA versus Beckett, versus HGA, versus SGC, Versus.... Versus Versus Versus........ - Peace.. \\//

Yep. Been seeing the same thing. Something about the trend line flattening out around mid to late June. Could the card shows have anything to do with regenerating the hype (Dallas, Miami, National)? Good call out, Brad. Expecting an uptick in the market this Fall, but nothing like what we saw over the Winter. My wish iOS to see the card market go back to steady growth and outperform the S&P 500 on an annual basis.

The NBA needs to get their shit together. Lebron has got to go. The NBA needs a new ambassador(s). I don’t care if it’s Luka, Zion, or Giannis. Lebron divided fans and made a lot of them resentful towards the league. The NFL and MLB learned. Maybe that explains why they didn’t tank as heavily.

@@carlos4087 The NBA would have been fine without Lebron. There were plenty of others who could have succeeded in that role. Durant, Wade, Dirk, CP3, Kobe, Harden. Lebron can say whatever he wants, whenever he wants. But there are and were consequences to his actions. He wasn’t educated on what he was speaking about and that only caused further disdain. Again, let me make this point clear. Lebron is free to say whatever he wants. He also could and should have handled things differently. A lot of the resentment towards the NBA is because of him. It didn’t have to be that way.

Lebron has done great things for the league. Past tense. His time has run it’s course. That’s all. I am a huge NBA fan and I want to see it do well. That being said, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that NBA ratings have been some of the lowest in 20 years with all of the amazing talent the league has. That was my entire point. The political narratives led by Lebron James clearly had some effect. It’s time for new leadership.
