There's quite a few people that think because it is a BMW, it is better made and despite it being 10, 15, 20 years old - it will be more reliable. More so when they think that entry level 318i that they de-badge to hide the fact they bought one of the cheapest BMWs will be an engineering masterpiece. The parts are typically more expensive and when you are budget limited buying a used car, cost of ownership and not just purchase price is something to consider. Some younger buyers scrape their money together for that 3 series BMW to impress their friends and then are screwed when it has a major issue requiring 4 figure (or even 5) repair bills. It becomes an expensive lawn decoration until they get the cash to fix it. If I was to get a BMW, it would be something like a 328/330i or 335i at a minimum, anything less and I'd go to a premium Japanese brand first. Instead of an entry level model with few options and/or less standard equipment with a German badge, made in a country that is less reputable for building cars well, you might get a quality car with a Japanese badge made in Japan in top spec. If a new BMW 320i is about AUD$70k, then once you're looking at spending AUD$100k, at this price or higher would I consider the German marques heading into their mid-priced models to be first pick. It would be preferable to keep ownership to the first 5-10 years and then offload it. Once they require major work, it gets pricey. In the high end models it can be more pronounced. I've seen a UK based channel look at used cars like MB S-class, BMW 7 series and Audi A8 - the depreciation can be savage on these cars and that might entice a used buyer - but the parts prices on these models that featured all the cutting edge features for the time they were new are still high end luxury car expensive. The car might cost less than 20% of the new price after 10 years, but you are still up for $5k for a xenon headlight assembly.

I knew a guy who we all warned about buying a 545i. Then he made fun of my 1992 Toyota pickup. 1 year later, head gasket goes bad and it’s a $2500 fix. While he was pouring a quart of oil for every 500 miles. My timing chain went out at 359k, I bought a timing chain replacement kit for $118 and it came with a gasket. I paid a mechanic friend $400 and got it back the next day. He then sold the bmw at a loss, and then bought a Nissan Altima with a CVT SMH

You need a mindset that you know these cars need better maintenance than most. I’ve had three and never regretted buying one. I did most of the work until I got too old to crawl under the car. I see a lot of young guys buying these cars that are 10 to 15 years old. They put a few mods on them with some maintenance and their having a ball. These cars are extremely easy to work on if your mechanically inclined. There’s plenty of videos and boards with a wealth of knowledge on these cars.

Haha actually I as a german am not really bothered by Scotty, these cars are a totally different game here in Europe, as parts are available and everybody knows how to work on them. I own a 2015 (200K Km) BMW 320d and had a few minor issues mostly exhaust system related but since the warranty expired I've had absolutely zero issues with this vehicle. So I've never invested anything in this vehicle apart from regular maintainance. My family also owns several Mercedeses from four different decades with very different reliabilities, but most are decent with no catastrophic failure yet. It is quite different with vehicles from the Volkswagen group tho, I've heard a lot of bad things about low mileage engine failures and a bad costumer service.

Georg Obergfell yes over in Germany they definitely have different materials on those vehicles, here in America they built the Xdrives and they are all junk, 2015 BMW 7-Series sold for $90k now in 2020 you could get one for $15k that’s disgusting.
@georgobergfell
@georgobergfell 4 жыл бұрын
@@mcgyverb1664 I'm not sure if the differences are really different Materials used, rather I think it's about how cars are put together (most BMW and Mercedes SUV models are built in the US only, even for the european market), as well as how they are treated by owners and Mechanics. Shops here are usually very good and they better are, because a lot of people are working in the automotive industry, including me, and could possibly maintain their own vehicles. I have lived in the US before and from my experience shops in the US aren't as responsible and careful with vehicles, instead they try to rush through as many cars as fast as possible, often not finding and adressing smaller issues that can indicate or lead to bigger problems. Also I found that people don't care about their cars as much in the US. A Mercedes just needs a little bit more attention than some Chevy truck that was basically built to be abused. If it gets that, it will have little issues.

This is so true. My buddy bought a used 5 series a few years ago. He picked it up for what he thought was a great deal. After less than 2 years of ownership, he was fed up. He loved it when it wasn’t in the shop. However, after nearly $4K in repairs, he’d had enough. It became an endless money pit. When I was thinking of buying a used 3:series, he called me. Bought our 2006 E90/330i at 10y/130kmi and it's been the nicest car I've owned. We did the level 2 transmission work for about $300, saving about $2700. Having a QuickJack really helps on sealed systems and sporty suspensions, btw, worth every penny. Also replaced the $600 rear mirror that wouldn't stay put for $40 via eBay. The car does everything you tell it to and with the E90's normally-aspirated motor, there's no turbo worry. Our teenager loved learning to drift in it and the creature comforts are addictive, especially the sunroof. Being able to wrench our own rides lets us have things we'd otherwise not be able to afford, including our Toyota Sienna, frankly. Keep your fluids clean and up, listen to anything that sounds different, and get the service manual. (Btw, the E90 service manual is $250 new(!), but eBay had a very good one for $98 and, again, worth every cent.) Finally, we've replaced so many hood/trunk struts on our vehicles it's not funny; this ain't BMW-exclusive, but they aren't very expensive or hard to replace.

@@360therapy8 thats beside the point. The point is, you shouldn't have replace ignition coils and valve cover gaskets at only 75k on any car. My 2010 Nissan Maxima with a CVT has 180k miles and the original valve covers, coils, and plugs are JUST NOW starting to go out. BMW is junk and no excuse for a luxury $60k car.

Without getting too technical, I've owned BMW's and Mercedes for years, never kept them long enough to have any issues with them. Spent tons of money on new ones, not doing that anymore. Bought a great little car for half the money I spent on German cars. Will be buying Toyota or Lexus cars because I'm older and wiser and using that extra money to invest and save now, as I really don't care about impressing people anymore. Good review.

Main reason people buy euro cars is for the prestige image. Driving dynamic comes 2nd. Thats a fact. That is most of the cases.

@@realaudioreviews I am a big BMW motorcycle fan, my 1200 GSA is an absolute tank that has taken me safely to so many amazing places. I was recently in Germany visiting my son in the army, he had a 2003 used BMW 4 door that he drove safely all over Europe, it drove like it was on rails. When he rotated back to the US he sold it to the next soldier and away it went. Off topic, but your comment sparked some memories....

I have friends that own a independent BMW repair shop and was amazed at the amount of plastic parts used in the engine compartment. I saw a BMW SUV with a bad supercharger and the cost to repair it was over seven thousand dollars. I agree with Scotty that you should lease a BMW and turn it in after the lease and do not buy the car.

@@AL-SH not realy. In Europe BMW are very reliable cars with low costs over the years. Its funny to see, how a car get a expensive luxus in the USA, meanwhile in Germany even 18 year old beginner can buy a used old BMW F Serie and drive it the next 10 years. BMW 3/5, Mercedes C/E, Audi A4/A6, VW Passat.... this are normal workers cars.

I agree with Scotty, my BMW has had lots of issues over the years but I fix them myself as they come. You either have to have a lot of money to waste or be a garage mechanic. I personally love to work on my car. I actually get excited when is time to fix or service something, but nothing I love more than buying new tools.
