Hey Scotty, I'm a college student looking to buy a car for the first time. Right now I'm looking at four cars: '06 highlander hybrid, '05 rav4, '03/'04 4runner, and a '06 lexus rx 400h. Are there any standout models that I've missed or should take off the list, in the pursuit for an affordable suv that performs well on and off-road?

@@bryanbennett972 That is so cool! Stories like yours make me even more determined to keep my '05 Silverado forever. I bought it new in '05 and it's still perfect, never any problems. I'll keep it until I can't drive anymore. Before I bought the '05, I had a '91 Silverado that I also bought new. Drove it for 14 years until I bought the '05. I should have kept the '91 even after buying the '05, nothing was wrong with it, but back in those days, it was just an "old truck" and getting a lot of miles on it, so I sold it.

I worked on many components of the GMT800 through tier 2 and 3 suppliers. It was the end of building simple fuel injection and heavy duty platforms. The Vortec engines were simple beasts. The network of suppliers was either US or EU/Australia. One big happy profitable way of making tanks. I remember the quality testing and durability review was massive. Then the effect of NAFTA started showing - jobs and factories shut down en mass in north America, I'm talking 25 in a span of 2 years. With it went the body of knowledge that was about production and priorities for a truck/car, all gone and now engineered to be cheap, and maximum profit. The boardroom and decision making was based solely on cost, not quality or any long term objective. GMAC killed GM because they didn't spend much money on RnD. The tried and true model was upended with emissions and drive to build offshore.

Yes, they were bulletproof. I have an '05 that I bought new and still have; short bed regular cab 1500 LS V8 4.8 liter. Never had any issues with it, really great old truck. Only thing is that it's a 5 speed manual and I am getting a little tired of shifting gears all the time, but there's still no way I would ever sell it. You just don't see many regular cab two door, short bed pickups anymore. And even fewer with the 5 speed manual.

I'd say through the 90s. My dad got a 2000 Sierra new and it ran like a champ until about 165k when the first fuel pump went out. It went through 3 of them, but other than that it was a steering pump and oil pump that went out, both after 200k miles. Eventually the transmission died around 245k when it was my truck. I was a mentally challenged person and bought a 2018 Silverado because I liked that old truck and jesus christ, I've already gone through a leaking radiator and busted water pump before 60k miles. Oh and my battery already died too. One of the biggest regrets I have.

You could undercoat the frame and make it rust proof. I did it to my truck, but I used the Walmart .99¢ a can black spray paint instead of Rhino Line. Rhino Line 🦏 is one of the best though but cost more. It took about ten cans to spray the frame drive shafts. High temperature engine or paint for the exhaust will keep the exhaust from rusting and parts that get hot.

She's leaking some oil and definitely needs some work, ball joints etc. but it still runs really good once it warms up. I'm considering getting a re-manufactured motor and transmission at some point rather than buying a new truck. I had the same track here in Canada and I had over 400000 kmeters on it and it still ran but rusted away. It was by far the most reliable truck I ever owned.

Yes, they were great trucks for sure. I had a 98 with 350 but unfortunately the salt destroyed it 😢 I’m seeing everyday the good things we had are just now a thing in the past

Happy early birthday!!! My birthday was yesterday. My dads friend has a 2001 Silverado and it’s a solid reliable truck, 300,000+ miles still running well. Highly recommend it. May not be the nicest car but if you get a higher end model it’s still comfy and you get that reliability from the old Silverado’s. The new ones just aren’t built the same.

I have an 03 silverado and I don't really have any problems with it, 201k miles, just shakes a bit on the highway sometimes. Shouldn't be going too fast anyway... My family also has an 02 suburban that lasted 376k miles, I'm gonna throw a used engine in and try to get it working because everything else with it is fine. Excellent trucks back then

You're right about the older Chevy trucks. I had a '91 as my first vehicle, drove it until '05 and bought a new one, which I still drive to this day. Never had any issues with either one, unbelievably reliable trucks. I'm planning to keep my '05 indefinitely, there is no reason to ever get another one. Chevy has a website where you can buy brand new engines and transmissions, and for a fraction of the cost of another truck, I could replace the engine and trans someday if they ever wear out. So far, at 160k miles, both the engine and trans are still working perfectly. Of course I do keep up with the maintenance though and I'm sure that helps a lot. Young people are always trying to buy my '05 truck from me, I keep it in like new condition so it looks great. They say "oh dude it's a cat-eye!, how much you sell it for?".. Sorry not for sale. Lol

So true, Scotty. I think the earlier C1500 trucks were better built, and , of course, much simpler without all the computer controls that now inhabit the late model trucks today. Even more distressing to me: every truck maker, except for a few models (mainly the compact trucks) has fewer or no models available with manual transmissions. So, more computer controls to manage the transmission for the automatics. I can find all the parts I need to maintain my '88 C1500 costing pennies, compared to what the dealership would charge for new. And there are tons of videos, forums, and books on how to maintain these more trusty old horses. Keep up the good work, Scotty.

Man my father's 95 GMC has been going for a long time, and it's always on dirt roads. The clear coat is gone about halfway from the top. Today I been wanting to practice buffing and polishing. I did all the steps and this thing is shiny! Cant wait to wash it and see how fast that goes.. when I went to wash it last everything was so hard to get off the paint. now the water flows right off.
