Agreed. That is why I do wickless half jar testing. I wick for the bottom half of the vessel first because it does get hotter the lower it gets. Then I proceed to the full jar and burn test. Good information.

I do this too. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has tried all three methods (wicked, wickless, half-jar). To the Batcave for some experimentation!

Nice video and always a good topic. I love wickless testing but I do think a lot of people in the groups miss the point of wickless testing. It's really not meant for testing first burn to last burn, but more to find your initial wick with one or maybe two burns and then quickly switching to a fully adhered wick test. I think wickless really comes in handy when dealing with expensive vessels and you don't want to use four or five of those vessels only to find out half way through burning that three are absolutely not going to work. Then you are left with three expensive vessels you can't save. I ran into a great example of why I love wickless testing to find your initial wick this week actually. I have been using EC26 wax in the Lumen vogues and they burn perfect with two LCS 35's. I just started to test the new M12 soy wax and it requires two LCS 50's for a perfect burn. Same vessel but the difference between two waxes is four wick sizes. That's a huge jump and a lot of extra candles to find that difference with normal wicking. With wickless testing I was able to drop two LCS 35's in the Lumen, start the first burn and it was apparent within two hours that it was clearly not the right wick. From that short burn I knew to go up multiple sizes and then made fully wicked testers using the 45 and the 50 to burn them all the way down. Shallow tins like you mentioned, damn near impossible to do wickless in those. LOL 100% agreed. You also nailed it when you said you need to test all the way down and wicking that test is the best method for sure.

I was curious about this method and there’s a process for everyone! This was interesting and maybe once I finally am making money (LOL!) I can test as you do. I do the wickless testing mainly to determine whether a wick works or not and change them out. After that I do absolutely do an abusive burn, for determining FO and most importantly is my candle safe. Thank you so much for sharing. You selflessly help so many chandlers and I am incredibly thankful!! I love your braids, btw ❤️ so pretty!! 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️🙏🏻

Great information I am with Jeff I will do for my initial testing a pour that’s only halfway down the jar and I have started doing wickless testing just to see which wick will work Then I make a jar with a wick tab to get an accurate wick test. I think the wickless testing is great if all you’re doing is just trying to figure out which wick would be the best choice without having to go through multiple vessels The tins no can do it will not stay afloat lol

Not unpopular in my book. I agree. 😉 I actually did a video less than a year ago on my channel about why I don't do or recommend wickless testing in most situations. So I'm with ya.

100% agree!!! In the end, people will end up spending more if they do wickless testing and then end up having to do it the proper way. Not all shortcuts are good. If you don't have the funds to properly test your products, then start small. That's what we did. A lot of companies do offer sample wicks! Great video!

I am in the camp that does wickless at the beginning, just to get a base line of which wick(s) I think would be best. Then I change over to a fully completed candle to do a complete burn test. There are pros and cons to everything, it may or may not work for everyone's situation.

i do wickless testing whenever i first start a new type of wax. i do it to get an idea of what size wick would be best and burn until the wick starts to flop like you mentioned or its burning too hot/not enough etc. seems to work ok! once I'm comfortable with a wick size i go test it normally with other fragrances too. works well!

It works fine for me. I always do wickless testing to Get an idea on how the wick will perform. It burns excactly like it should through whole candle but in the end the wick drowns, that’s true. But still I can Get an idea on how this wick will act even at the bottom. Like deepness of the meltpool and how hot the jar will get.

Been watching your videos for awhile, got all my materials and been researching cost effective ways to test wicks, waxes and fragrances and thought about wickless testing but now you're assuring me I need to not take any shortcuts and invest in the testing for safety and quality. That's #1 priority for me and my small business. Great video!

💯 agree. I’ve decided to stop doing this as well! I feel it defeats the purpose of an actual test. You are testing the top, middle and bottom of the vessel. If you pull the wick out and put another one in, you don't know how it’ll perform with a fresh full candle, so you're back to square one!

Ive been seeing a lot of post about wickless testing. I didn’t even know what it was, I’ve been meaning to google it but I forget, I guess it’s not that important to me 🤣 but I’m glad you explained it, so now I know 😅 and I definitely will not be doing any wickless testing, I need to see how it burns from start to finish.

I had the same experience with wickless. Now I do a full burn because it’s more precise.

Thanks for sharing this. Totally agree with you. It makes the most sense to test under similar conditions/scenario to how the customer would use the candle so you can predict how it would behave for them. I'm a biologist and, if you can't study something in the field, you try to keep the conditions as close as possible to the field conditions.

completely agree! while it may save some money on supplies, i feel like im losing my time and patience. though it may give you a starting point, you will still need to test top/middle/bottom anyways. i just do my research in fb groups, etc and try to see what others are doing and that gives me a good enough starting point!

Personally, I totally agree with you! You cannot test wicks with one burn! In my opinion it has to be a full burn. To have a full burn it has to be adhered to the bottom... so, like as you said it won't float or slip to thr side! Wicks burn differently the further down in the vessel. It is my opinion also that wickless test burns are not truly beneficial or accurate! Bravo Erica!

This makes a lot of sense. I just started making candles and had the same concerns about wickless testing. I might use it if I start from scratch, but as you said, will definitely continue with other testing after. Thanks so much for this vid!

Wickless testing stressed me the heck out. In the beginning I took this advice and never found the correct wick, so I got discouraged and stopped making candles. I recently started back testing and paid more attention to type of wick I was using in comparison to the formulation of the candle, wax and jar size, this made a huge difference. Yesterday I was created a successful burn test spreadsheet and added the candles to the sheet the passed the test, that was a good feeling. I agree with you and your thoughts 100%. The wick does shift which can interfere with the burn. Leaning closer to one side of the jar may create an uneven melt pool or heat up one side of the jar more than the other side. Wickless testing in a tin is just not a good idea. I read that you should at least test burn about 3-4 times before you rule out a wick. I know there may be tunneling, and you can tell early on in the testing process, but then this goes back to selecting the correct wick based on your formulation, container size and wax. I would not want to buy a product that was not properly tested. In my opinion I feel that is unethical.

I totally agree. I did wickless testing for such a long time along with half jar testing and by the third burn it will fall over and I would give up on that wick. When most of the times it turns out it just needed to be glued down to the bottom so I can get an accurate test result. So now I do not do wickless testing anymore. I do it starting from the full jar and I've gotten so much better and accurate results. I use an apple corer and pull the wick out. And then put a new wick right down in the center. I saw this on armitage candles KZfaq channel. It's worked like a charm.

Huh... I've heard about this process, but I've never done it before. Now I'm actually glad I've always done it this way. As an update. I bought my first presto Pot today... I could cry. I've been doing the Double Boiler Method for so long. I named my LLC after it.

Yes as a science teacher I couldn’t understand the wickless testing …results are not valid and candle testing is a controlled experiment meaning you should only test one variable at a time…safety first…

I'm still in the testing phase, and I do the wickless testing as well. I am currently doing the half jar testing with the wickless method using wooden wicks. During my testing with these nee tumblers, the wick leans and is covered in wax leaving me with about 4 oz of wax. So what I'll do is remove the wax, and place it in a tin, and test that with a secured wick in a smaller size. That way I'm not wasting my products. But I will definitely start wicking them and just save the wick clips used for testing purposes.

I start out with wickless testing and then make a full candle and test that way as well🤣 now thinking about it, I should just skip the first step and just make the second step the whole process

Here’s my view on wickless testing. I think it’s good as an initial trial to see which wick you prefer. I don’t trust it fully though so after the initial test, I’m doing a full test with real wicks.

100% Agreed, I´m an architect and a furniture manufacturer, and just started making candles as a hobby, and I apply the same principle to any business I make, If you are selling ANY kind of product, it's a massive mistake to skim in prototypes and samples, I believe it's irresponsible and morally wrong to sell a product that's not flawless for the consumer´s use besides it can even have legal implications.

I have done both methods, and I love and prefer to do a wickless test first (half way) to get an idea of which wick to use for a full jar test. I find that I save money and time.

Would anyone recommend adhering the wick and then if it doesn’t work out freezing the wax to remove and then remedying/adhering another wick. Trying to find a cost effective way to test correctly.

Nothing to do with wickless testing but with the vessel you are testing with. Why do you test in a different vessel than you use in your candle line? How do those tests help if you won't be using the same wick size? Or are you just testing to see if wick type works with wax & fragrance oil? I'm new to candle making & I'm just curious.

You always have to make sure to test in the same vessel you will be selling in. I am looking into adding these vessels specifically for wholesale purposes :)

I think if you can’t afford to do full thorough testing, find a cheaper career. This is an expense. Period. How can you test correctly with a floating wick? This method, when used alone, blows my mind!!

I really don't think this should be an "unpopular opinion" and should be talked about more. It is all sound advice. While it may cost a little more in supplies it really saves time and is much more accurate to just make multiple candles with wick sampler packs and judge them all at the same time. Well, aside from the scent overloads.
