I drive E-buses with their 600v batteries here in Brisbane Aust. We've been instructed not to allow electric scooters and skateboards on buses because of the 'potential fire hazard'. Go figure.....

Probably due to the company thinking they have some control over the state of the batteries in the busses. They will have" professionals " looking after them The public's batteries are all unknowns. You don't know the state of any of the age, maintenance, or charge state., or if they got bashed around.

I rode an E-bus couple years ago and they're a lot quieter and accelerate faster than gas powered busses. Don't see why e-scooters and skateboards cannot be allowed. The same issue can still happen in gas powered busses

They did a study a short time ago. Comparing EV bus fires and hours of operation with the equivalent ICE busses. You might want to consider the results before getting too far away from the exit on the EV. I don't remember the exact numbers (they're available). There's millions and millions of hours of service with the ICEs without significant fire hazards. With the EVs it's like 20% or something ridiculous. They've had several burn to the ground and by comparison there's not that many in operation.

@hardsayings2400, the energy grid in California can't even support it's electrical demands even with fossil fuel consumption still active and the fact that California IMPORTS electricity! Two summers ago when there were ~800,00 to around 1,000,000 A-EV's on the road there, they put out a PSA, "Please don't charge your cars, the power grid is already overloaded due to the heatwave!!"🤣Now just consider what it'd be like if 100% of power generation was "solar" and what I call "windmills" AND California had ~40 MILLION A-EV's on the road rather than ~1,000,000 AND they still have to power all of the homes, businesses etc., which do not possess their own independent solar arrays. Imagine what it'd be like for ~330 MILLION+ across the entire country. The fact is, there less than 2.5 MILLION A-EV's on the roads in America yet there were ~292 MILLION vehicle registrations last year. Despite the activist's claims, A-EV's are NOT anywhere near "mainstream popularity"....

@@siphesihlemagagula1709 MYTH: "EVs always catch fire" Last summer a car park at Luton airport went up in an inferno. Social media speculation, authoritative as ever, pinned it to an EV fire. Thanks social media for your contribution. The fire brigade later said it was a diesel car. Now, an EV battery fire is bad news. It burns hot and is hard to extinguish. Indeed it can ignite again after several days. But burning isn’t a battery’s sole purpose in life. Whereas a combustion car carries a tankful of stuff whose one job is catching rapidly on fire. And it can do so when you don’t want it to.Electric car fires are very rare. They might stem from a fault or crash, but no official crash test ever caused one. EVs are extensively developed and subject to the discipline of recalls. Electric scooter fires are far more common since they’re mostly uncertified - because they’re illegal. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) reported 23 fires in 611,000 EVs during 2022, or 0.004 per cent in a year, which makes it 20 times less likely to happen than ICE car fires, which burned 3,400 times in 4.4 million cars, or 0.08 per cent. MSB has also recently proven a new way to extinguish battery fires fast. (Article from Topgear)

Regarding Chinese batteries: I am a retired firefighter, and I can tell you something about Chinese batteries and power supplies. Not long before I retired (as Chief of my department) we fought a house fire on Christmas Day. After we extinguished the fire we routinely did a "Cause and Origin" investigation. Here is what we discovered. The older couple who lived in the house were given, as a gift from one of their kids, one of those video picture frames that were popular at the time. Their kid who gave them the gift had pre-loaded it with pictures of the grand kids, so it was ready for hanging on the wall, which they did. The next day, Christmas Day, the homeowners had been invited to a Christmas Dinner at the facility where the wife worked. While they were gone, one of their neighbors smelled smoke and looked around, and noticed smoke coming out of the couples' house, and so called the Fire Department. We were able to confine the fire to the living room and kitchen, but the rest of the home was pretty much destroyed by smoke damage and damage to the wiring. The cause and origin of the fire was actually easy to determine, as the charring of the wall surface made a 'V' shape poining right to where the video picture frame had been hung, and extended upwards from there to the ceiling where it then spread. The homeowner identified that location as where he had hung the video picture frame. Through the nationwide fire reporting system, eventually a sufficient frequency of these thing causing fires had been compiled, such that all participating fire departments throughout the country were informed in a periodical bulletin that the NFPA put out. Anyway, what was discovered was that the Chinese had been marketing portable video units, about the size of a tablet computer. These were popular with people who, say, were going on a road trip with their small children and could put a cartoon or kid-oriented CD in the thing and keep the kids occupied during a long drive. But keep in mind that the power supply and battery in the video unit, when used to play a video, would only be "on" for an hour or so. That was what the service of the electronics were designed for. But they got the idea to dumb the units down, and to make them into video picture frames. But in that application they were now "on" for 24/7! The power supply would then overheat and start fires. Now back to EVs: The insidious thing about E-Bicycles is that people tend to charge them by bringing them inside the house to charge them. An electric car often is charged outside, where a fire due to some defect might not be as dangerous, as the car might be parked outside in the driveway during charging instead of inside the house.

Think of all the parking garages we have under apartment and office buildings. It's only a matter of time before one of these garages, and the building above it, is destroyed by fire. Most garages are built to survive a gasoline fire, but a burning lithium ion battery will burn right through the floor. Even if the fire starts in a non-electric car, once it spreads to an electric car, the fire will be almost impossible to extinguish. I wouldn't want to spend much time in a building with a garage in the basement if it allows electric cars.

Radioisotope generators? Just kidding, even if we ignore the slight issue of radioactivity, they can't provide enough power to move a car. Maybe one day we understand nuclear fusion well enough to make reactors the size of a suitcase, a few pounds of Deuterium/Tritum could last for ages and such a small reactor could probably even be properly shielded. But even then there's the problem that hydrogen just loves to leak out even the tiniest gap. Sorry, but ICEs will be the best option for the foreseeable future, and we'd be better off finding a way of turning atmospheric CO2 back into fuel rather then stubbornly trying to get rid of ICEs.
