They are getting more power out of 3.0 diesels today. They could easily make a weak diesel that would go 400k miles, but nobody would buy it today. People want power. Not some heavy, underpowered turd.

@@cstgxthat’s with every electronic and emissions part known to man, also known to fail. These Cummins run on 2 wires and go a million miles when taken care of. These Cummins have all mechanical parts as well. They physically force themselves to work. No electronics getting in the way or DEF limp modes etc. And they can get 30mpg easily. Longevity definitely matters in today’s consume and throw away world.

@@manueldelbusto725 I really appreciate the advice, it means a lot. I hope it makes you happy to hear that I honestly want to be a very careful and cautious driver, I love the truck, and want to take care of it. My grandfather has been taking me to abandoned parking lots over the past few months so I can get the feel for its pedals, and the way this specific truck handles. It’s very sentimental to me, and it’s been in my family since before I was born, my grandfather custom ordered it back in ‘03. I promise, I’ll respect the rules of the road, and be conscientious. I want to take care of it for my Papa. Again, thank you so much for the advice, it really means a lot

The 5.9 engine in your papa's truck is totally different then the 5.9 talked about in the video. Your grandfather's truck is a 24v not a 12v. And instead of the Bocsh 7100 pump its got either a VP44 or CP3 fuel pump. Only thing that's the same is its 5.9L displacement. Just so you know.

Well the 6bt was available is 160hp only in 94 and 95. Power jumped to 180hp for auto trucks and all California trucks 96-98. 215hp was standard for manual transmission trucks after 96. The bosch pump is a p7100 pump hence the nickname p-pump. The dodge chassis was all new in 94 and way ahead of it's time. Ford still used front leaf springs, the dodge had a much more modern 4 link with coil springs. It is also considered the first "new body style" truck.

These are literally THE BEST diesel motors out there without question. Say what you will and argue whatever points you wish, the facts are as they will remain. They are the easiest diesel engines to work on period, they get the best fuel economy for what they are as far as heavy duty trucks go. They also have incredible capabilities that outdo even the modern station wagons with 4x4 and diesel power plants we call heavy duty trucks today. Are they perfect? Absolutely not, nothing built by human hands will ever be perfect. But the reliability of these engines is what makes them so incredible and sought after. You can build one of these things into a 24 valve for added efficiency and power. You can build one of these into an absolute demon killing race motor that'll even stomp out Lamborghinis and Ferraris in certain cases. Or you can just simply have a daily dependable driver that will last you all your life and even some of your children's lives. That's what I'm getting mine for.. well, that and to make money hauling things.

If you know a thing or two about Cummins CPL’s you can build a 6BTA to 230HP and 620 lb-ft with all factory parts and Cummins factory settings. The CPL for that rating is 1553, you order the camshaft, have your P-pump set up for that CPL (bigger delivery valves, 13mm iirc) and order up an HE-351 turbo, and you’ll have an engine that really pulls and will still last 3-500k miles or more, you can even bump the fuel a little and get closer to 300hp / 650 lb-ft and not really give up any longevity. Keep in mind those numbers are on stock governor springs at factory rated speed…meaning all that power is under 3k RPM….and you know it’s a safe combo because Cummins built them for medium duty trucks and fully warrantied them back in the day. You can certainly make far more power with aftermarket stuff but you’ll be messing around with turning the engine well past 3,000 RPM, compound or big single turbos, etc etc and what most guys don’t tell you is a 500+hp / 800 lb-ft+ 12 valve will never live to 3,4 or 500k miles or more like a stock one will. They’re great engines but they’re 359 cubic inches and you can only push them so hard before longevity starts to suffer.

I still remember my Dad buying his new 1992 Ram 3500 dually extended cab 5 speed. It was $21,500 out the door. He wrote a check and that was that. Say what you will about 160 horsepower. We pulled an 8 wheel 40’ gooseneck and it had no problem pulling huge loads. Another advantage to being “underpowered” was that it got 20+ mpg unloaded and even pretty good mileage loaded. We used an old F250 460 prior to that and it would do 8 mpg. Back then diesel was a good 20 cents cheaper per gallon and ran from as low as $.85 and as high as maybe $1.05 a gallon. The truck definitely paid for itself many times over

See now, as an industrial diesel mechanic, I really feel that most people miss the point of the 6BT entirely. The reason this engine is such a strong platform is because of the original purpose of its design. It was designed and built to be an agricultural and industrial use engine which is meant to endure thousands upon thousands of hours of duty across a HUGE array of applications which have requirements that vary widely. If it had been designed with automotive use in mind specifically, the characteristics of this engine would undoubtedly be very different and would be geared towards performance and efficiency rather than dependability and efficiency. It truly suits a tractor far better than a pickup truck, but those that don’t understand this are likely hauling their groceries anyway. As for the rest of us, we don’t really care if it’s fast or not. We want to hook up to heavy stuff and move it from point A to point B again and again and again which the 6BT does VERY well. As it should. Also, there are several other engines that match or even best the 6BT, but you won’t find the majority of them in a pickup. Not normally anyway. 😂

Unless you are trying to make 1000+ horsepower, it will get you there the easiest. It already has a ton of power from the factory. A stock 6.7L will generally last 400-500k miles, and a deleted one can make it close to, if not over a million miles.

With the right upgrade to the engine I argue that the 12v 6bt would perform better and last longer than the new model Cummins

Contemplating a stock one with a ve pump in my 86F150. Not going for a whole lot of power. Just an upgraded turbo. As light as the truck is im not gonna need a bunch of power

the only drawback to the 6BT is the parent bore block......but thats only a small issue for such a prolific design.

It’s simple as to why this engine was so great. It was built well but it could handle 2X the horsepower so they tuned it down. It now had hardly any horsepower so that’s means it’s going to last a long time. Due to the Duramax being such a large engine when it came out and more HP and torque this forces Dodge and Ford to build larger motors. The Durmax is still in operation after 25 years and I don’t see Chevy ever changing this because it works. They are known well to go over 500,000 miles and more.

Hell if it's a 12 valve with a P pump you can add horsepower with 5 minutes and a screwdriver. With new valve springs, governor springs, and a grinder you can crank the fuel to the moon and it will become a monster that will turn your tires into smoke whenever you want. And it'll still last 500k miles. Best diesel engine ever put in a pickup truck, you can't change my mind. The 7.3 PS is legendary too, but the 12 valve has it beat overall in my opinion.

The only problem with those engines is that they weigh 1100Lbs. But they can wear out 2 or 3 chassis. They make the slant 6 look unreliable, wich they are not.

They put the 5.9l Cummins in more than just Dodge Rams. I have one in my Ford F800. It doesn't have the p-pump. Hp numbers are only a small part of the story. My truck is rated at a measly 175hp, but it has 420ft/lbs of torque. If I could dial up the hp and torque, I would. 300 hp and 700ft/lbs sounds better and it would have an easier time going uphill. A ten speed bike is faster out the hole. That engine is, in my opinion, the best diesel engine ever made.

The 6BT was an industrial engine while the 6.2 was an engine designed for economy and was an underpowered turd. The Cummins engine SAVED Ram in the 80s and many, MANY engines outlived the rest of the truck they were put in. I have one in a 1989 D250 that starts right up and has zero blow-by.
