I had a 2cv with a van engine fitted - drove it from UK to Africa and back over the Alps - worked it hard sometimes in 45C+ temp and through deep snow - never missed a beat - 603cc and 29hp

The engine is great and reliable, the problem with the diesel BMW's is all emission control systems surrounding the engine. Be prepared to have the check engine light on most of the time, and spend hundreds of dollars every year once your mileage is 80,000 plus.

I don't know a whole lot about diesels but I have heard a lot of good things about the fuel economy the torque and how reliable it is if maintain correctly, but I do know I'm not a big turbo fan so give me a good diesel engine with no turbo and I'm good to go

Octane is about compression/ignition - above 10:1 compression engine needs higher octane. “Power” is about energy density. So E10 contains less energy density than E5, and of course “gasolene”, because ethanol is less energy dense than petrol - so it has less “power” to perform work (i.e. move the car). And diesel is more energy dense than petrol, hence higher mpg. And LPG has less energy density than E10, hence lower mpg. And EV batteries are the worst - much lower energy density (hence much lower range).

With a super charged engine you don't need scavenging, I worked at a dealership that sold modified trucks.they put 3 inch exh. On the trucks and they wouldn't even brake a tire loose.the factory trucks had no problem, explain that.

My GM LCV (2.5l Ecotec) has been good so far. It has sufficient power and torque for my Colorado pickup, and gets good mileage, 28 mpg average on road trips, so I disagree with you on those points. I don't have high mileage, so time will tell. I like the fact that it is normally aspirated. A turbo can only add opportunity for problems, in my opinion.

500hp isn't a lot nowadays. That 3.2 makes 500hp but doesn't make any torque

What about the International VT275 or 4.5L Powerstroke? It’s basically a 6.0L minus 2 cylinders, made for the Ford LCF, does it have the same issues as the V8 counterpart?

the fact that the engineers consider two banks on a block meaning more mechanical parts went against the definition of efficiency. like the other person mention on the post i would never have a v8 diesel .. must be a super pain to work on

EA888 Gen 3 is superior to the majority of the engines listed here. Closed deck iron block, VVL & VVT, extremely sophisticated engine management and high-output fuel delivery system. Can make a reliable 500WHP all-day with basic bolt-ons, ethanol and a hybrid turbo.

Ford were constantly blackmailing the Australian government for handouts. It constantly wanted to live on Welfare payments like a solo mum with several baby daddys. So was General Motors AKA Holden. I'm sure that sounds familiar to Americans. It always threatened to shutdown production in Australian. Then the government would put up the cash. Then the company never kept its promises or agreements and the money was never invested back into Ford Australia it just got siphoned off. After they excepted another welfare payment they shutdown anyways. And the government just had enough of the games. Wages weren't really the issues. More like high paid salaries and corporate greed. And slowing demand for large cars with six packs or V8's. More demand for soccer mum SUV with under sized turbocharged engines with poor reliability suddenly became the must have handbag accessory. Over the family saloon. And the midlife crisis pickup truck became a thing over owning a hotted up coupe. Most production is automated. Wages ain't the big cost. Its environmental standards. And power prices freight shipping cost etc. "Production cost" And unfortunately most western countries can't compete with countries that have low to no environmental standards. I.E burn lots of coal for cheap power etc, Some countries have subsidized government freight. I.E if i order from china its normally free freight. Arrives in 7 days. Order from Europe $10 to $15 12days order from USA $50 to $60 3wks to 4wks Development for Barra was done by Ford Australia and Tickford. They were designed as longrange interstate cruising for Australian conditions. Ford Australia built far superior engine's than ford Europe or America at that moment in time. My last BF Falcon clocked over 650'000kms without even a water pump replacement. Averaged 9.5 to 10 litre per 100kms, Compared to my under preforming unreliable V6 duratec Mondeo ie (Contour) using 12 to 12.5 litres per 100kms all i replaced was plugs and ilder bearing. New set of shocks and bushes and brakes and rotors. I often see my old car still driving around after selling it five years ago. In comparison. I've hardly ever seen a Ford Mondeo, Focus or Ford Mustang or F150 with over 250,000kms without needing a rebuild or serious work or transmission failure.
