Here's Why the AT-900 was Roland's Greatest Organ

The Roland Atelier AT-900 had several different trim models, and this one is the Artist Edition, which I found at Gregg's Music Center in Newcastle, California. The Platinum Edition had slightly different styling and more sounds, but an upgrade package has been installed on this organ to give it all of the sounds of the AT-900 Platinum Edition - over 500! The sounds are incredibly detailed and realistic, and it's my favorite Roland organ!

What isn't usually known is that an AT900 that's been upgraded won't immediately give you the full Platinum specification. What you need to do is hold down the Rotary Slow/Fast button along with the rhythm variation 1 and 4 buttons, then power up. The start up display will then show that's it's a Platinum and you get 100% of the Platinum functionality.

It's really a great instrument, the only problem of these is the big price they had. Here in Italy I waited every year for a trade fair that happened in my city to put my hands on Roland organs, I tried every year ech model, from AT-90, to AT-90SL. Then when AT-900 came out, they stopped making that fair in my city and I never saw a Roland organ again :(

I had the pleasure of producing a CD featuring Tony Fenelon four years ago on the AT-900 Platinum Edition. Tony worked for many years at Roland and was instrumental in the development of the voicing and feature set for the Atelier series. His arrangements of popular film themes on the Atelier are amazing and really showcase the versatility of this instrument.

James, If I were a pianist and had that organ, I think I, like a kid in a candy shop, I'd be playing it for many hours. It seem very addicting. Bye the way, did I catch a bit of the Moldau by Smetana? It sounded like the orchestral opening. Mt. Baker theater in Bellingham has a terrific theater organ and I'd bet that Roland would be awesome in that mode. I Love the Organ Sound, we had a full pipe organ at Trenton State College in New Jersey. I loved to hear it when I was a music major there. Happy New Year.. Rik

Hi James. Thanks for the tour. I was in the Las Vegas competition with you in 2011. I was so glad as a Hobbyist, I was in the first group to play. If you and the other youngsters played first I would have walked out. LOL Fantastic! I do have another hint for you. The "manual" button can be programmed through the Utility/options/manual assign function. It can be programmed to a load next function which will change the registrations. It will also cancel all voice related settings.

It's really sad about Roland Atelier stopping production. I really think they could have done a lot better at marketing the AT 900, and also the AT 350 that could have really saved the whole line, as it should been marketed toward Rock and Roll and everything else. It looked like a keyboard, but had 25 pedals as I remember it. I wanted to try it our when I was in Las Vegas, but it seemed to be off limits.

When I hear Walter Wanderly, it is my understanding he had a B-3. But I have never heard anyone that sounded like him, or any organ or organ sample that sounded like him. It remains a mystery. By the way, he dropped in on San Francisco and stayed here a while. He would show up at Le Montmartre, a very hip small club on Lombard at Fillmore. The house band was Viva Brazil, which had a couple albums. Marvelous band. Keyboardist now teaches in Berkeley across the bay. Bad dude.

WOW!!!!! I have a FE 50 Yamaha electone and was 13 in the mid-80s when I got it. I thought I was the king of the hill. Have played on FX 20 which was $21000 in 1986-88 to buy. A real shame these declined as there was great pride in playing them. Yes, Keyboards like the Rolands Arrangers, Techniques, Yamaha Tyros/Genos are incredible. But these styles of Organ are very powerful and watching/listening to one been played using it's full potential to a song like Chariots of Fire was awesome. I could have some fun with that one. I learnt the peddles which is a rare thing these days. The 80s like the music was a huge boom time for these types of organs. Certainly as a very kid and teenager, I was so chuffed to play one. Would be great if the boom times came back.

Congratulations on owning the best Roland organ ever made. Sadly they are no longer available as I believe that division has been sold off, and will likely never be built again. I own the Atelier 90s, but would one day love to own the 900 for my recording studio. There were not many 900's made. I doubt you can order the upgrades directly, but Gregg might know of a after market source. We both won our divisions in the Roland competition in 2011, I won the youth division (10 years old) and Gregg won the professional division. Here is the contact information for Greg's store. Gregg's Music Center in Newcastle, California. (916) 740-5120

It's sad that Roland exited the Organ market. It is interesting to me how people's odd attitudes are about organ. This thing is basically a furniture grade cabinet around a good synth with two keyboards stacked, excellent split and layer capabilities, massive amounts of sounds, and the ability to play pedals with your feet for even more capability to create music than any synth.

Can you get a 32' Resultant from any 16' Pedal stops?
@pianomanpaulthomas
@pianomanpaulthomas 5 жыл бұрын
Why not, but then again, why? I admit I didn't watch this whole video, and I don't know details on editing capabilities on this instrument. But on most any synth with decent editing you could trigger two sounds, one at a 16 foot pitch and another a fifth higher at a 10 & 2/3 foot pitch, which gives the aural illusion of a 32 foot pitch. But if you have that much editing, you probably could also simply trigger a real (albeit digital) 32 foot pitch. Either way, the speaker system could be a problem. A system that can produce a single clean bass note might distort with the fifth's produced by a resultant stop. And few (sub)woofers can reproduce the 16 hertz tone of a 32 foot stop with much volume. If you could pull it off either way, you'd feel it more than hear it.
@stuboyer1901
@stuboyer1901 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the pedals can be played in either monophonic or polyphonic mode. So in poly a root and fifth will give you a resultant 32.

In my opinion, you still could have have said IS, and NOT used the past tense "was", since these organs are still very much relevant. In fact, if you get time, look up David Marsh. He too lives in CA. Not only is he a young wonderful talented theatre organist, he also owns and plays one of these. He knows everything about these organs.

Good demonstration. The only thing I don’t like about the Roland AT-90 and 900 organs is that, for the top of the range, you would have thought they would have given them a full upper manual going down to C1, and even a full classical 30 or 32 note pedal board. But I guess the people who would have wanted these features were not really the target market. But it seems their actual target market was not big enough anyway, since they stopped producing them.
