Sometimes deals don't pan out the way you would like them to. I looked at this bike a while back and was a bit bummed out after not getting the deal. Stay tuned to see what happened.

Wait? Wait? People do that? I did that my first time ever getting the bike to move. I freaked out and grabbed the front brake and it fell. I was so scared of it but I knew I couldn’t stop. I watched a few videos of getting the bike moving. Clutch friction point and duck walk. I got it to move the second time and I didn’t stop riding it in a parking lot for 2 hours afraid to stop. Took me 3 days to go on the actual road and it was 300 feet to the stop sign and turn. I signed up for the MSF COURSE and using their smaller bike I gained confidence

Nah yeah, it happens, my experience was when I not only went off an embankment, but I had to leave the bike till the next day and came back to discover it was stolen. It took me a week to shake the feeling. But I eventually got another bike, but parking in public took me a few months to get used to that again.

I bought a 2003 sportster back in March for just under 2k and the seller was moving to the east coast. It was dropped on the right side but the damage was just a scrape on the exhaust and the right grip, and everything else looked in fantastic shape and all things considered was a great deal, I serviced the Harley and had it inspected, I purchased several after market parts, the bike is one mean sporty. I'm always looking for deals to possibly flip, but this bike for some reason I kept this one, its just a blast to ride.

You did better than a lot of us would, especially where you’re trying to make cash on your buys. Good luck on the touch ups. We actually had a 48 come in as a trade that also went down, not sure what it is about folks not replacing the little things like levers, grips, and turn signals. Especially when that’s the only thing that shows signs of a “down” and when the damage on those parts looks light enough where those were probably the only damaged parts. Talking mostly about the 48 we just got, that lever looked trashed in comparison.

You inspired me to finally take that leap and try to flip my first bike. I bought a 06 1200 sportster for 2500. The same situation happened to me. The guy posted it saying it just had a “fresh oil change” but when I showed up, it had oil all over the bike. He claimed it was from the oil cap not being able to close all the way and it needed a new one. I drove over an hour so I was pretty disappointed he didn’t mention that on the post. But cosmetically the bike was in excellent condition and ran great so I didn’t want to pass it up. I’m waiting on the oil cap to come in and praying there isn’t an oil leak

Jon, I'm willing to bet that all it needs to fix the bar wobble is the fork stem nut to be tightened a little. It's a pretty common issue. There adjusted using the fall away method. It's pretty easy and something you could do yourself, just find a video on KZfaq on how to do it. Edit: A link to a great video demonstrating the fall away test and adjustment. Maybe slightly different spec on the Sportster. Can't remember off the top of my head. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5tdlMeHxLmlZ2g.html

I think DDFM channel is not very useful for two reasons. First, the "instruction" he gives is common sense for anyone with - wait for it - common sense. Slow down in traffic, don't go fast around blind corners, always watch your blind spots and the blind spots of others, etc. Duh! Second, the people who are actually going to listen to his "instruction" don't need it, and the people who need his advice, aren't going to change their a-hole ways because DDFM tells them to. Oh, and one last thing. Every time I see some anger-issue richard-head slap someone's car mirror, I want to find them and kick them in the dick. Maybe I am the one with anger issues.

I'm old, short and have a bad lower back with sciatica. Forward controls force me into a hunched over position when I reach for the handlebar and cause extreme pain. Forward controls also give worse handling. However, I can ride my Standard Sportster with mid-controls all day long with no pain during the ride or afterwards. Forwards may look cool to some people but not to me. When I was younger, I had a few bikes with them but I never liked them even before my back problems.
@MaaZeus
@MaaZeus 5 ай бұрын
Mids may be better for handling (unless one happens to be tall, then mids on a low cruiser are a nightmare) but that hunched forward is more like a handlebar problem. Either mini-apes or pullback handlebars, anything that allows you to sit with your back straight is usually the fix. The clamshell posture (feet forward, low T-bars far away from you etc) may look cool but you will feel it in your back on prolonged rides no matter how young or old one is. 😅

This is what I've always been concerned about with the private buying process. So, let's say I find a bike I like and want to buy it for say $5K. Of course, I need to test ride it. I've seen videos that say to let them hold onto the money so they know I won't run off with the bike. What is keeping him from just taking that money and running? I guess most deals go on at their house, so then you could slam on the door or call the cops. I also know that most people are good people and just want to do right. It's just something I've pondered about. I grew up in a crappy part of town where I couldn't trust my neighbor. Anyway, glad you were able to get the bike. I don't know if I would want to own a Sportster, but man, would I love to ride one. Just because they are mostly the same as the ones from the 50s. I'd almost want to do what you're doing to be able to ride a bunch of different bikes.

Jon's Moto Garage reply Thanks! Now I’m torn between the 72 and the xl1200c. Tbh I don’t know which to pick.

@@kombijr , I'd go with the Custom over the 72. The 72 is like an old Schwinn Sting-Ray and I wouldn't go touring on one of those.

spaceflight101 thanks for the reply! I actually changed my mind and went with the Dyna Low Rider. I realized I just liked the look of the 72. Not practical like you mentioned.

@@kombijr , I wouldn't mind getting a newer Low Rider but I'll just keep on riding my 2005 1200 Roadster. It just turned 80,000 miles.

The Sportster 48 has 3 MAJOR problems that prevent it from being a practical motorcycle. One, the front wheel/tire is so big that it has a serious negative effect on handling and braking. Two, it has wire spoke wheels with tube type tires, so that WHEN you have a flat (and you will) you're not going anywhere. You will have to call a tow truck, and that could (and probably would) cost you an absolute fortune. Three, the gas tank is so small you have a range of under 100 miles. That is simply ridiculous. I can't help but wonder who came up with the idea for this bike. At least the newer models have tubeless tires. My 2006 1200L solves all those issues. It has a standard size 19" front wheel with a motorcycle sized tire, cast wheels with tubeless tires, and a 4.5 gallon gas tank. But best of all, it has a CARBURETOR. No computer crap to fail and cost a fortune to fix.

It seemed like something’s wrong with the front end, could be as simple as a crappy or out of balance tire. But it could also be blown out head bearings or a bent wheel or other costly items... I’d stay away from a flip, wouldn’t want someone to get hurt on it because it’s really a POS and you unknowingly sold it to them. That would suck! I’d only buy it if it was for personal use ( & a good deal) and actually take time & go thru and fix everything correctly.

Most likely the fork stem nut needs to be tightened. I'm a HD tech and that is a very common issue.

Sporties aren't great bikes for flipping unfortunatly. Can always find one cheap because there's a million of them. Always see people asking too much for them. But I do have a 96' 1200 myself I got for $1500 in great shape. At that price I have room to make some money but wouldn't buy a newer one unless it was insanely cheap and left room on the table for a profit.
