I had to borrow a friend’s used police car once to pick my daughter’s up from school. A few things I noticed were that people on the road around me drove really well and were very courteous. When I arrived at the front of the school, the car received a lot of attention. A few teenagers actually looked nervous and I thought I saw a group of three boys start tossing items from their pockets into a nearby bush !

I don't know much about cars, but I know my bf's was a Dart (souped up) and good friend's was an old caddy souped up. LOL Caddy went 210mph. Went over 120mph on a friends motorcycle. From what I understand, you can't go that fast these days if you tried w/modern vehicles...but idk.

From what I was told by a female cop in training, the top speed of most interceptors is 150 miles per hour. Another friend who is a cop told me he doesn't recommend buying a used cop car from a government auction, as their engines are usually pretty worn out from all of the idling and hard acceleration they do.

Debatable, If you do purchase a used police vehicle I always go for background investigators or Detectives squads. They have not been on patrol and beat to crap. I have had multiple retired squads (47 of them) and that's what I have learned from my own experience.

Former police here: was outran once by a hellcat, I was in a Ford Taurus. Also I’ve never seen a police car with a run lock. My agency issued either 2 keys or a key and fob combo so that you can put one on your belt and leave one in the ignition. Also the keys were universal so if you had a Ford key you can unlock and drive any Ford in the fleet, whether it be a Taurus, Explorer, or Crown Vic.

I had a retired police car from Aspen, CO, a Saab. The front wheel drive was great in the winter and I drove it till the wheels fell off, almost. I just got tired of it and donated it to a local thrift shop, and with that giant hatch back they were using it to make deliveries. It had all the bars and places to attach police stuff but no police stuff. It was the original color, and with a ski rack on it people would immediately slow down when I got behind them. I have a Jeep now.

As a former patrolman, I can say I've never been outrun because I had a radio. I'd never buy a used patrol vehicle, even if it was taken care of (sort of) it probably idled 4-5x's longer than it drove down the highway. Our fleet was turned over at 85K miles. That doesn't seem like many miles, but that's after 5yrs and running daily for 8 or more hours a day.

If there's *any* cop modification you want to have on your car, believe it or not, it's the *brakes.* I've talked to multiple officers about what the PDs want most in a car. And they all say the best braking possible. They want their cops to be able to stop fast, moreso than to start fast. The quicker they can stop, the quicker they can get out and do their job. And that made a profound level of sense to me.
@joaquinaguilar165

I've always said this to my brother who is a racing enthusiast. That as much as you put in the engine you've better spend on some great breaks.
@gravemind6536
@gravemind6536 2 жыл бұрын
All cars have the best braking possible though so this makes no sense. The actual most important thing is tyres they are what determines how quick your brakes stop the car the fact is if ABS can kick in then you have the maximum stopping potential the tyres will allow. You can giant 8 piston calipers and carbon ceramic rotors but they will not stop the car any quickers if you are still locking up.
@ColonelSandersLite
@ColonelSandersLite 2 жыл бұрын
@@gravemind6536 Well, without a tire upgrade, a brake upgrade can really help with brake fade issues. Useful for spirited driving but probably not so much for hard braking to avoid a single accident during a daily commute. Maybe it would be a good thing if you live in the mountains and do a lot of downhill braking though.

Meanwhile, the rider was maimed, and finding work will be the least of his worries with his hospital bills. Driver wasn't liable for any of it since the biker was hit with reckless driving and deemed responsible. He later told me he did it on purpose. I bought a 2008 Crown Vic that still had everything except the computer, lights, and police insignia. The cameras were still there, although I had to take it to someone to make it work. The coolest part was the amount of functional safety features such as a full length skid plate, rubberized fuel tank, and the fire suppression system mounted in the trunk. The downsides were that, while the emergency lights were removed along with the insignias, it still had the black and white paint job and spot lights, so people would always assume that I was a police officer and slow down 5-10 mph below the speed limit. It took much longer to get anywhere! Some parts are made specifically for police cars, such as the suspension and steering parts, and you can’t buy them at an auto parts store. You either have to buy them from the dealership or convert them to a more readily available part (although that sometimes costs more money because you have to convert related parts). Also, I was constantly getting pulled over so officers could laugh about how they thought I was a cop until they either never got a response on the radio, or noticed my license plate. It always seemed to happen when I was in a hurry, like on my way to work. I would buy another one, but I DEFINITELY wouldn’t use it as a daily driver again for those reasons.

I actually owned a Chevy impala police package, I imagine it might have been undercover car as the car was blue and did not seem to have ever been repainted, but when I bought it we noticed the color code for paint was odd as it didn’t say a ordinary color code but rather used a sort of rare paint code. When reading through all badging on the car we ended up noticing that it was indeed police package vehicle, although the suspension on it was was rough house feel just about every bump but it didn’t feel as though you would lose speed or traction despite that

Fun fact, most civilian Ford vehicles with the my Ford touch system with the bigger screen and info dash that are also used as police cars can have a lot of the police features enabled with a OBD2 dongle and forscan software on a laptop. I had a 2016 Ford Fusion and added blackout mode. It's used by police in order to be extra stealthy. Basically as soon as you turn off the ignition every light inside and out and all the chimes all go out with the ignition. You can also enable headlight strobing but not sure if that's legal.

I used to work in a small university garage that had a public safety department with 5 cop cars. The officers destroyed 3 engines in 2 1/2 years from excessive idling. The oil pumps barely put out any flow at idle speed so scored cylinders and trashed valve guides were the sad result. All the officers had to do was rev up the engines every 5 minutes to 1500 rpm and that would have solve the problem. But that was too much work for them.

But I do know that can wreck an engine because I had a temp job delivering mail on a rural route around Xmas one year that lasted 3 months. Deliver to a box and then go hundred feet to the next. Repeat for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. Within a week I needed a water pump and after the 3 months the car was burning oil. It was a toyota celiac with just over a 100k, always taken care of. Could easily have gone over 200k if it hadn’t been for those three months of unintended torture. I had to part it out before 120k. Maybe if I revved it up between deliveries, I wouldn’t have had to.

This was super interesting, now I want a police alternator. Decades ago I had an RX7 with a 4 barrel Holley carburator and I think it was an RK turbo. Was a nurse and got called in for an emergency. Cop pulled me over, told him I was going to an emergency. He says I couldn't drive that fast without lights a sirens. Apparently the wrong thing to say was, where can I get some. Told my mechanic the story who mostly worked on race cars and he asked why I stopped because the cop wouldn't have been able to catch me. I would have never done that even if I'd known.

Scotty, you should see the mileage that police BMW’s get in the UK. Easily upwards of 100k and some at 200k in 3 years of use. Pretty insane!
@monkeh55

thats not insane, that should be easily normal on every car and bmws still cost a fortune to keep up and running and toyotas still way more convenient
@Horizon301.
@Horizon301. 2 жыл бұрын
@@monkeh55 it is in the UK, especially given people complain about BMW reliability. For police work though, it’s the way to go as a lot of others don’t have cars durable enough. And we are talking about 100k in two years of use for normal traffic policing BMW’s, for older ones or motorway police it can be much higher if they don’t send them to auction too quickly. Toyota police cars would be useless in this country, you would be better off with not pursuing.

@@CHUBBYAMERICAN interesting. We have police for each constabulary so for example Devon and Cornwall police for that area or West Midlands police which covers those cities, that being said though, they aren’t anything large compared to the US, you are probably looking at less than an hour end to end of each forces area. I assume they are running cars near 24/7 given the mileage as it’s quite a feat, especially when you are policing in the city as the MET police vehicles also have high mileage

I used to work at a used car lot back in the early 80s. One day and old lady brings in her car in this huffing and puffing. She was wanting to sell it and it was a 72 fury 3. It had a 440 high performance engine in it with the 750 Holley stock. Are we would race people in hot rods and beat everyone of them. It would not turn a tire from a dead stop but going 30 miles an hour and punch it and hold on cuz it will jump sideways with you.. it was solid white as it was a state patrol car. My friend restored it which didn't take much doing because it was in great shape.. he owned it up until a couple years ago and one many trophies with it at car shows throughout the years

Cool channel Scotty. Yes I have owned an ex cop car. It was a 1982 Holden (GM) VH Commodore 5 litre V8. South Australian spec sky blue in colour. It was what we call in Australia, a "poverty pack", like all police cars were or still are (?) here. This meant no optional extras. These were vinyl seats, no radio, no electric windows, etc. Oh, the only option that was ticked was aircon. It was my second car and I loved it! It was faster than a normal car. Transmission was stronger and shifted quickly. (Squeal tyres going into second). Everything an adolescent shouldn't be driving. It had the range of a motorbike. At less than 200km (120mi) I was looking for the next fuel station. Next car was a 1989 red 3.9 litre EA Ford Falcon wagon ex Western Australia fire department, with a range of 700km. No problems with either car. Former was traded for the latter because of fuel consumption and the latter was stolen. Anyway enough of my nostalgic rant, but you did ask.

The Ford Interceptor has threat detection, with 360 sensors. If it senses someone coming up, it rolls the windows open, locks the truck, alerts the driver and starts the car. And all kinds of other small items that you can turn on in your explorer via Forscan. Also they come with a full accessory wire harness from the factory with dedicated fuse panels, rated fuage wire, full signal wires (like tach, 12v-off, 12v-on,12v-running, 12v-accessories, dedicated alt, breaks active, engine&coolent/tranny temp, speed, gps/accelerometer sensors), all lights with secondary input, i.e. if you send a signal to the head light wire, it will take precedence over the factory, so they can strobe and disable all factory nights. It's insane the tech that comes on the new interceptor. The newest Gen explorer platform is amazing for an interceptor. And the explorer intercepter is actually completely different everywhere then the explorer consumer. From door size, panels, seats, dash. They look the same. But nope. Ford actually moved some interceptor tech to the consumer model because it's just awesome.

LOL... I almost got busted in Utah by a cop driving a blacked out Charger, unwashed and with round shouldered tires. Traffic was bunching up into a pack and ramping up to 100 mph like a nascar race. I decided is was safer to be in front of the pack of cars so I got out of the pack and sped up to around 115 mph in my Volvo, I got about a quarter of a mile ahead of the pack and noticed that the charger was keeping up with me.... and then.... red lights in the windshield LOL. Of course I stopped. I explained to the cop exactly why I was going so fast was to get far enough ahead of the pack to create a safetey buffer between me and the pack. Fortuneatly... I was in uniform for my own job as a driver. I had all of my information available and insurance right where I needed. The cop let me go, but he said.... next time just leave home early. LOL...

Otherwise you can play dumb. Even if it doesn't make sense. They can't prove anything if you got away. And he outran cops on and off his whole life up until his 50's. So up until around 5 years ago. I bought a white 2008 Crown Vic (in 2012)ex-patrol car from Long Beach. The guy I bought it from was an active officer that ran a side business, lot near Hollywood, with about 150 Crown Vics that he rented to the studios as extras for the movies (cabs or cop cars). He also cycled some stock out which he sold to the public. When I shopped for my car he told me that rubber floored vehicles were patrol cars and carpeted were for detectives. My car was very predictable, handled the a champ. When I bought my ‘17 Ram 1500, I gave it to my niece as her first car.
